{"title":"Alternator Regulators","description":"\n\u003cp\u003eAn alternator regulator controls field current so the charging system supplies the vehicle and maintains the battery without excessive voltage. On many alternators the regulator and brush holder form one rear-mounted assembly; other designs use an external regulator or a control function shared with the engine or body-management system over LIN, BSS or another communication link.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eSelect by VIN, alternator manufacturer and exact alternator number, rated current, regulator reference, connector and pin protocol, field and phase-terminal layout, brush dimensions, mounting pattern and voltage strategy. Alternators that fit the same engine can use different electronics. A regulator with the wrong communication protocol may produce fixed charging, warning lamps, battery drain or no output.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eA battery warning, flat battery, flickering lights, overcharging or low measured voltage does not prove regulator failure. Test battery condition and state of charge, belt and tensioner, alternator pulley, high-current cable and fusible links, voltage drop on positive and earth paths, ignition supply, current sensor, network commands and parasitic drain. Record voltage, current, temperature and scan data under controlled loads.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eCharging voltage is not universally 14.4 V. Smart systems deliberately vary voltage with battery temperature, state of charge, deceleration and electrical demand; some briefly charge lower or higher than a traditional system. Use vehicle data and a calibrated meter. Never disconnect a battery with the engine running to “test the alternator”, because load dump can damage electronic modules.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eDisconnect and secure battery power using the vehicle procedure before exposing the alternator B+ terminal. Electric and hybrid vehicles can contain high-voltage systems requiring trained isolation. Reassemble cleanly, protect insulation, torque terminals, then commission with battery registration or adaptations where required.
