It raises local air and wall temperature before starting so injected fuel ignites reliably when the engine is cold. Modern controllers also use post-glow after starting to reduce noise, smoke and hydrocarbon emissions, and some systems operate plugs during particulate-filter regeneration or other thermal-management events.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eGlow plugs can use metal sheathed heating coils, fast-response self-regulating elements, low-voltage pulse-controlled designs or fragile high-temperature ceramic tips.
