Centre Exhaust Silencer

A centre exhaust silencer, often called a middle box or resonator, reduces selected combustion frequencies between the catalyst or particulate filter and the rear silencer. Its chambers, perforated tubes and tuned volume smooth pressure pulses and limit cabin boom while maintaining the gas flow required by the engine and emissions system.

Centre sections differ in pipe diameter, overall length, casing volume, inlet and outlet offset, hanger position, joint type and internal acoustic tuning. Some combine a long front pipe, flex section or secondary catalyst; others are a small resonator in an otherwise straight pipe. A section that physically spans the gap can still create drone, restriction or poor ground clearance.

Select using registration or VIN, exact engine, power, emissions package, body style, wheelbase and build date. Confirm petrol or diesel configuration, catalyst, GPF or DPF layout, pipe bore, flange or sleeve joints, sensor bosses, hanger direction and whether installation needs clamps, gaskets or a cut point. Flow restriction and backpressure

A sound resonator is designed to pass required gas flow. An impact can flatten the pipe; corrosion or detached baffles can obstruct it. Excess pressure reduces engine output and raises upstream temperature.

Cold inspection and leak testing
