A thin oil film bends and scatters incoming light. At night, headlamps create halos; in low sun, the same residue becomes a bright veil. Interior haze can be almost invisible until temperature and light expose it.

Why streaks form
Residue, evaporation and cloth loading interact
Too much cleaner dissolves soil but leaves more liquid to redistribute. Hot glass flashes the carrier before it can be wiped. A cloth already loaded with dressing, detergent or fabric softener transfers contamination instead of collecting it.
Use one cloth for the wet cleaning pass and a separate dry low-lint cloth for final buffing. Fold into clean faces and change it when drag or streaking increases.

Interior film sources
Interior plastics release volatile compounds, especially when new or heated, and these condense on cool glass. Smoking or vaping, silicone-rich dressings and airborne cooking or workshop oils add persistent films. Cabin-filter condition and ventilation influence how quickly contamination returns.
Clean dashboard products before glass and avoid overapplying dressings. If oily mist returns rapidly with demisting, inspect the HVAC system for contamination or a coolant leak rather than continually masking it.
Condensation is different from residue
Moisture condenses when glass temperature falls below the cabin air's dew point. Cleaning reduces nucleation dirt and improves clarity but does not remove the moisture source. Wet carpets, blocked drains, poor ventilation and coolant leakage require repair.
Use demist controls and air conditioning as designed. Do not wipe a small viewing hole and drive while the rest of the windscreen remains obscured.
Safe exterior preparation
Rinse or wash away grit before close wiping. Lift wipers only where the vehicle allows; some bonnets require a service position and can be chipped by raised arms. Never let a spring-loaded arm strike bare glass.

Directional wiping locates the streak
Finish interior passes horizontally and exterior passes vertically, or the reverse. When a streak appears, its direction identifies which face needs correction. This avoids repeatedly cleaning both sides.
Use a safe seated reach or suitable tool for deep windscreens. Leaning across controls with cleaner in hand risks damage and an incomplete lower edge.
Cloth selection and laundry
A clean short-pile microfibre or purpose-made low-lint glass cloth gives controlled contact. Plush detailing cloths can retain product and lint. Paper quality varies and printed paper can transfer ink or scratch coatings.

Printed heater and antenna conductors are delicate. Wipe along them gently and never pick contamination with a hard object. A broken track needs an appropriate electrical repair.
ADAS cameras and optical areas
A forward camera views through a defined windscreen zone. Clean accessible glass normally but do not remove covers, touch lenses or disturb its mount without the repair procedure. Haze trapped between laminated layers cannot be wiped away.
Windscreen replacement, camera removal or geometry changes can require static or dynamic calibration. Glass cleaner does not correct a calibration warning or blocked camera caused by damage.

Screenwash is not the same as hand-applied glass cleaner
Screenwash must work through a reservoir, pump, pipes and jets and provide freeze protection at the selected dilution. Use a vehicle-compatible product at the seasonal ratio. Washing-up liquid foams, attacks materials and lacks controlled freeze performance.
Never mix unknown screenwash chemistries blindly. If contamination exists, follow a suitable drain and flush process and capture waste responsibly.
Glass polish, clay and scrapers
Cleaner removes surface film; polish uses abrasives or chemistry against bonded contamination and minor water spotting. It cannot safely remove a deep scratch without changing optical geometry. Test an inconspicuous area and protect surrounding trim.
Detailing clay can collect overspray after lubrication on suitable exterior glass, but any trapped grit scratches. A scraper requires correct angle, lubrication and confirmed plain glass; do not use it on film, tracks or unknown coatings.
Hydrophobic coatings
