One moulding may use textured plastic, a painted soft-touch face, bright trim and a bonded display. Cleaner that is mild on polypropylene can strip printed symbols or craze polycarbonate.
Work by material and contamination, not by wiping the entire cabin with one wet cloth.

Identify the contamination
Dust, oil and product residue need different effort
Dry dust should be vacuumed or lifted before moisture. Finger oil needs mild surfactant; sugary spills need controlled water-based removal; old silicone dressing may need repeated gentle degreasing.
Unknown sticky deterioration can be the coating itself breaking down. Stronger cleaner accelerates removal rather than restoring it.

Hidden-area testing
Test cleaner, tool and drying process in a concealed representative area. Inspect the cloth for colour and the panel for changed sheen, swelling or tack after full drying.
A pass on hard lower plastic does not prove compatibility with a soft upper dashboard.
Dry dust removal
Use a soft vacuum brush while supporting delicate vent vanes and switch edges. Do not blow dust into displays, sensors or the HVAC case with compressed air.
For gloss trim, lift particles with a clean plush cloth rather than dragging them under pressure.

Screens and instrument lenses
Switch displays off and allow them to cool. Follow the equipment cleaning instruction; often a dry or slightly damp soft cloth is preferred. Do not press on LCD panels or spray edges.
Ammonia, alcohol and glass cleaner can damage certain coatings. Use them only when explicitly permitted.
Piano-black and high-gloss trim
Gloss surfaces reveal micro-scratches. Remove grit first, use a fresh high-quality cloth and straight light passes. A general interior brush can mar the finish.
Polishing removes material and may alter texture or printed graphics. Treat damage as a refinishing decision, not routine cleaning.
Soft-touch coating failure
Age, heat, sunscreen and incompatible products can make soft-touch paint sticky. If colour transfers with very mild cleaning, stop. Continued rubbing exposes base plastic unevenly.
Professional refinishing requires coating removal and compatible paint; dressing does not reverse chemical breakdown.
Steering wheel and controls
Body oil builds gloss and reduces grip. Use a material-compatible cleaner with minimal moisture, keeping product from switches and seams. Remove all residue so the wheel feels dry and secure.
Never use a slippery protectant on steering, pedals, gear selector or handbrake.
Airbag covers and seams
Passenger and knee airbags can deploy through dashboard panels; steering and seat airbags use engineered seams. Do not saturate, glue, fill, drill or mount accessories across these paths.
If a cover is lifting, cracked or previously repaired, seek restraint-system assessment rather than concealing it with dressing.
Vents, sensors and speaker grilles
Apply cleaner to a small brush, then capture residue with a cloth. Do not push foam deep into vents or allow liquid onto sun-load sensors, cabin cameras or microphones.
Vent odour usually originates in filter, evaporator or moisture, not the visible vane.
Driver-monitoring cameras and sun sensors
Cabin cameras can sit on the steering column, instrument panel or mirror housing, while solar sensors project through small dashboard domes. Film, dressing or fibres on these optics can affect driver monitoring and climate response.
Clean only by the sensor or vehicle method, applying product to the cloth. Do not rotate a camera, push its lens or polish a textured optical cover. A warning after cleaning needs scan-based diagnosis.
Cleaning is not disinfection by default
General cleaner removes soil but may not make a validated antimicrobial claim. A disinfectant needs the named organism scope, dilution and surface wet-contact time; wiping it dry immediately can defeat the instruction.
Strong biocides can damage coatings and should not be atomised through the cabin. Clean visible soil first and use only a compatible product with ventilation and label PPE.
Scratches, peeling and faded trim
Cleaner cannot replace missing soft-touch paint, remove a deep scratch or restore UV-faded pigment. Glossy wear on textured plastic may be physical smoothing rather than oil. Increasing chemical strength can make the defect larger.
Professional refinishing requires material identification, controlled preparation and a coating suitable for airbags, heat and interior emissions. Do not fill a dashboard crack over an airbag deployment door.
Sticky drink spills around switches
If liquid entered a switch bank, disconnect and remove it only by the vehicle procedure. Surface wiping cannot remove sugar from internal contacts. Repeated operation can spread residue and damage printed circuits.
Do not flood the assembly with cleaner or compressed air. Affected electronics may need dismantling by a competent repairer or replacement.

Interior protectants
A compatible protectant can reduce UV exposure and ease maintenance, but claims do not replace parking shade and care. Apply a thin even layer and buff to the intended low-sheen finish.
Keep it off glass, controls, screens and airbag seams unless expressly safe. Excess transfers to clothing and creates windscreen haze.
Overspray and glass haze
Spraying the dashboard releases aerosol onto glass, where silicone or surfactant creates night glare. Apply to the cloth and clean adjacent windscreen afterward with dedicated glass media.
Persistent haze can also come from plastic off-gassing, smoking or heater-core leakage and needs source diagnosis.
Chemical safety
Ventilate, wear label-specified protection and never mix bleach, acids, ammonia or unknown cleaners. Keep containers labelled and away from children and heat.
Allow surfaces to dry before occupants touch them and dispose of contaminated cloths appropriately.

Maintenance and tool separation
Frequent dry dusting and prompt spill response reduce the need for strong cleaning. Wash interior cloths separately from wax, wheel and engine towels without fabric softener.
Store brushes sealed and labelled by task so brake dust or exterior grit never reaches cabin gloss surfaces.
Common mistakes
Do not spray electronics, use tyre shine on the dash, scrub soft-touch paint, clean displays with unapproved glass product, saturate switches, polish printed symbols or leave steering controls slippery.
Fragrance is not hygiene and dressing is not repair for peeling coating.
