Valve caps protect the pressure-control mechanism from contamination
A pneumatic tyre normally retains air through a valve core held shut by internal pressure and a spring. Its exposed end sits close to water, grit, brake dust, salt and tyre-fitting products. A correctly fitting cap covers the core and stem thread so debris is less likely to obstruct the sealing face or make later servicing difficult.
The cap is not a substitute for a sound valve. If a tyre loses pressure, investigate the core, stem, base seal, wheel and tyre rather than assuming a new cap is the repair.
A TPMS-compatible cap is not an electronic component

Plastic helps avoid a common corrosion trap
Dissimilar metals, water and road salt can create galvanic corrosion. An unapproved aluminium or decorative metal cap may seize to a brass, aluminium or plated stem. Attempts to remove it can twist the valve, fracture a TPMS stem or disturb the seal inside the wheel. A suitable plastic cap separates that metal-to-metal interface and is normally removable by hand.

The valve core remains the primary pressure seal
The core contains a small elastomeric seal that closes against its seat. Dirt, incorrect core torque, chemical contamination or age can cause leakage. A cap may slow a very minor leak if it has an effective inner seal, but using it to mask a defective core leaves the tyre vulnerable whenever pressure is checked.

Safe removal starts with a clean, supported stem
Brush loose grit away without pushing it into the valve. Hold a vulnerable metal stem gently near its base only if the service procedure permits, then turn the cap anticlockwise by fingers. If it is seized, stop. Pliers can crush the cap, score the stem and apply destructive torque to a TPMS sensor.
A tyre specialist can control deflation and replace corroded service components if removal threatens the stem.
Installation should remain a finger-tight operation
Check that the cap is clean and undamaged. Present it squarely, turn it backwards slightly until the thread start is felt, then screw it on without resistance. Seat it lightly by hand.
