Injection and decomposition
A dosing valve sprays the solution into a mixing section upstream of the SCR catalyst. Water evaporates and urea decomposes through heat-driven reactions to produce ammonia. Good atomisation, mixing and sufficient exhaust temperature prevent local deposits and distribute reductant across the catalyst.
Catalytic NOx conversion
Inside the catalyst, stored ammonia reacts selectively with nitrogen oxides to form predominantly nitrogen and water. Too little dosing leaves excessive NOx; too much can create ammonia slip. Closed-loop control uses upstream and downstream sensors or modelled data to keep conversion within the designed window.

Why ISO 22241 purity matters
SCR dosing passages and injector holes are small, while catalyst surfaces are chemically active. ISO 22241 controls solution quality, compatible handling and related requirements so mineral ions, metals and other contaminants remain very low. A liquid can look colourless and still be unsuitable.
Use product from an identifiable sealed supply chain and retain its batch information when managing fleets or investigating a quality warning. Do not judge quality by smell, clarity or a simple concentration reading alone.

Tank, pump and injector functions
The reservoir may contain a level sensor, quality or concentration sensor, temperature measurement, heater and pickup module. A pump builds controlled pressure, lines carry solution to the dosing valve, and a controller may purge the circuit at shutdown. Component layout varies widely between passenger cars and commercial vehicles.
Because freezing is expected in cold climates, tanks and lines are designed with expansion space and heating strategies. Adding antifreeze changes chemistry and is prohibited. The system normally delays dosing until temperature and operating conditions are suitable.
Refilling without introducing a fault
Park safely, switch the engine and ignition state as instructed, and identify the dedicated AdBlue filler. It may sit beside the diesel cap, inside the luggage area or in the engine compartment. Clean loose dirt before opening. Use the vehicle-specific bottle adaptor or clean dedicated nozzle to reduce spills and allow venting.
Add the handbook’s required quantity without forcing more after an automatic nozzle stops. Some vehicles do not register a very small addition, while overfilling can leave no expansion space or flood the neck. Refit the cap firmly, clean spills and allow the prescribed time or ignition cycle for the display to update.

Storage life, temperature and freezing
Heat accelerates urea decomposition and shortens storage life. Keep sealed product in the labelled temperature range, shaded from direct sunlight and away from persistent heat sources. Rotate stock by date and do not combine old, unknown or partly contaminated containers.
The solution begins to freeze at about −11°C and expands. A sound container needs adequate headspace and must not be overfilled. If uncontaminated AdBlue freezes, allow the closed container to thaw naturally and homogenise as instructed; repeated severe temperature exposure or damaged packaging warrants supplier advice.
Crystals, deposits and spills
White crystals form when water evaporates and leaves urea behind. A small residue around the cap can be dissolved with water during cleaning, but repeated heavy crystallisation near the injector or pipe joint can indicate leakage, poor spray formation, inadequate purge or unfavourable exhaust operation.
Fresh solution can be slippery and may attack or stain some metals, paint finishes or electrical connectors if left in place. Follow the safety data sheet, contain larger spills and prevent uncontrolled entry to drains or surface water. Never pressure-wash a spill deeper into wiring or trim.

Diagnosis needs more than a top-up
Record every stored fault before clearing it. Check level and quality plausibility, pump pressure, dosing command, injector spray or quantity by the approved test, heater circuits, exhaust temperature and NOx sensor data. An exhaust leak upstream of a sensor changes readings and can mislead the controller.
Quality should be tested with suitable calibrated equipment and a clean sample method. A refractometer may estimate concentration, but it cannot identify every harmful contaminant. When fuel or another fluid has entered the AdBlue tank, do not run the dosing system; follow the manufacturer’s decontamination procedure.
Short journeys and operating temperature
SCR chemistry needs sufficient exhaust heat. Repeated very short, cold trips can delay dosing and encourage deposits, although the vehicle manages operation within its calibration. Do not attempt to compensate by adding concentrated urea, additives or by forcing a regeneration routine.
Where the handbook advises an appropriate sustained journey after a warning, comply only when the vehicle is otherwise safe and no serious fault is present. Diagnostic instructions take precedence over generic driving advice.
Materials and system evolution
AdBlue-compatible systems use selected plastics and stainless materials because copper, brass, ordinary steel and zinc-containing materials can contaminate the solution. Modern systems integrate heated tanks and lines, more accurate sensors, closed-loop dosing and onboard diagnostics to meet progressively tighter NOx limits.
Software updates and calibration can matter, but coding cannot repair contaminated fluid, a blocked injector or a degraded catalyst. Replacement components must match the emissions approval and vehicle application.

SCR equipment is part of the vehicle’s emissions-control system. Removing, bypassing or electronically defeating it can make the vehicle unlawful for road use and may result in MOT defects, enforcement action or insurance consequences.
