Capacity figures do not guarantee control

A published maximum depth normally assumes a defined material, blade and cut. Thick steel, knotted timber or a layered vehicle body can load the saw differently. Stroke length and speed influence cutting rate, but aggressive settings increase reaction and vibration.

Choose the smallest suitable tool that can complete the work efficiently with proper support. An oversized demolition saw used for a delicate cut can be harder to restrain and more likely to damage hidden components.

Blade mounting must match exactly

Jigsaws can use defined shank systems; reciprocating saws commonly use another universal-style tang, while pruning chain components are entirely different. A blade that enters the clamp but does not lock fully can eject under stroke.

Tooth pitch must keep several teeth engaged

Thin metal needs a fine pitch so more than one tooth remains in the section; a coarse tooth can hook and strip. Thick or soft material needs enough gullet space to carry chips. Excessively fine teeth clog and rub, generating heat rather than cutting.

Variable-pitch blades can reduce resonance across changing sections. Follow blade charts and lower speed or use suitable cutting lubricant only where the material, tool and electrical environment permit.

Blade length must cover the full stroke

A reciprocating blade must project beyond the far side of the work at every point in its stroke. If too short, its tip can strike the hidden face and buckle, snapping the blade or kicking the saw. Account for shoe position and material movement.

Too long a blade can whip and contact pipes, wiring or finished surfaces. Adjust an approved shoe to expose only the length needed and spread wear along the blade.

Workholding is a primary safety control

Bench and sheet work

Clamp material on both sides where practical while leaving clearance for the blade. Support the offcut so it does not tear the final section or trap the blade. Keep clamps outside the shoe path.

Demolition work

Establish what the member supports before cutting. Walls, vehicle panels and pipework can conceal live services or stored load. Isolate utilities and brace the structure.

Branches

Identify compression and tension sides. A branch can split, swing or pinch the blade as fibres release. Work from a stable ground position unless trained and equipped for another safe system.

Hidden services must be located before the trigger is pulled

Use drawings, detection equipment and visual access to locate electricity, gas, water, brake lines, fuel pipes and structural reinforcement. Detection tools have limitations, so isolate supplies where the risk requires it.

On vehicles, disconnect and isolate batteries and high-voltage systems as specified. Cutting into an airbag inflator, fuel tank, pressurised pipe or orange high-voltage cable can be fatal.

Kick and pull reactions come from binding

When a moving blade jams, the tool body reacts. A reciprocating saw can pull towards the work or kick away; a jigsaw can twist around its blade; a chain saw can rotate violently if the kickback zone contacts material. Maintain a balanced stance and use every supplied handle.

Do not force the cut. Stop, isolate and support the kerf before freeing a trapped blade. Pulling the trigger while the blade is jammed can start movement without control.

Jigsaw settings affect surface and reaction

Orbital or pendulum action moves the blade forward on the cutting stroke, increasing speed in suitable timber but producing a rougher cut and more reaction. Use reduced or zero orbit for thin metal, tight curves and finish work as specified.

Set bevel shoes securely at their detents or measured angle. A loose shoe changes blade support and can expose more blade. Use anti-splinter inserts and guides only when compatible.

Reciprocating saws need firm shoe contact

Resting the shoe against the work gives a reaction point and reduces vibration. Starting with the blade free in space lets it whip. Bring the tool to speed only as instructed, then feed steadily without bending the blade sideways.

For plunge cutting, use only blades, materials and techniques approved by the saw maker. The tip can skate or strike hidden objects. Drilling a starter hole is often more controllable.

Pruning tools add branch and chain hazards

A small battery pruning saw is not harmless because it is compact. Chain-based models need correct chain direction, tension, lubrication, guard and sharpening. Kickback can occur rapidly. Do not remove a hand guard or operate one-handed unless the specific tool and trained method permit it.

Never cut above shoulder height from an unstable ladder. Use an appropriate pole tool or trained arboricultural method. Check for overhead electrical conductors and falling-branch exclusion zones.

Electrical supply must suit the environment

Inspect plug, cable, strain relief and casing before corded use. Route the lead behind the cut and away from water and sharp edges. Use residual-current protection where required by the risk assessment and site rules; it does not make a damaged tool safe.

Extension leads need adequate conductor size and complete uncoiling at high load. A hot plug, repeated breaker trip or damaged insulation requires shutdown and competent inspection.

Battery packs store high fault energy

Inspect for cracks, swelling, corrosion, liquid, impact and abnormal heat. Remove the pack before blade changes and transport it with terminals protected. Do not use a pack after crushing or water immersion until assessed by the prescribed route.

Charge with the compatible charger on a stable, non-combustible, ventilated surface away from exits and flammable material. Stop charging for smoke, hissing, odour or rising heat and follow the site emergency plan.

Noise and vibration exposures accumulate

Battery power does not guarantee lower noise or vibration than a corded equivalent. Tool condition, blade sharpness, work material and grip force affect in-use values. At work, assess actual trigger time across all tools and choose lower-exposure methods where practicable.

Hearing protection follows noise assessment and does not replace quieter methods. Tingling, numbness or whitening fingers require prompt reporting and occupational-health action.

PPE supports, but does not replace, control

Wear impact-rated eye protection and add a face shield where fragments warrant it. Hearing and respiratory protection must match assessment. Footwear and close-fitting clothing reduce injury from falling offcuts and entanglement.

  2. Allow a hot blade to cool without touching it to combustible material.
