What a warning device can and cannot do
Products sold under speed-camera detector or warning labels use several different methods. A GPS-based unit compares its calculated position with a database of known sites or zones. A radio receiver may detect energy in selected radar bands. A laser sensor may respond to light at relevant wavelengths. A connected device may receive community or service updates. A combined unit can use more than one method.
None of these methods determines the legally displayed limit with complete authority, identifies every enforcement operation or replaces driver observation. The device is best treated as a secondary reminder: check the signs and speedometer, then reduce speed smoothly where necessary.

Passive warning is different from active jamming
Location information
A database warning identifies a place where a fixed camera, mobile site or monitored zone may exist. Passive signal reception
A receiver listens for energy; it does not transmit to the enforcement device. How enforcement systems differ
Fixed cameras can use radar, road sensors, distance and time, image processing or other approved measurement techniques. Mobile operations may use attended radar or laser equipment. Database updates and stored information
A location warning is only as useful as its data and positioning. Before updating, identify the exact model, region, software and required connection. An update date is not proof of completeness. New enforcement positions, changed limits and mobile operations may not be present.
