Road contamination includes dust, clay, salt, soot, oil and biological residue. Water alone beads on oily film. Surfactants have water-loving and oil-loving ends that surround contamination and help carry it away.
Lubrication reduces friction between mitt and paint, but grit still scratches. Safe washing relies on removing loose material, clean tools and light controlled contact.

pH, alkalinity and cleaning strength
pH describes acidity or alkalinity in solution, but does not alone predict cleaning, material attack or protection removal. Builders, solvents and surfactant concentration also matter. “pH neutral” is useful for many maintenance washes but is not a universal guarantee of compatibility.
Use strong cleaners only where the finish maker permits them, at the stated dilution and dwell. Never let alkaline product dry on aluminium, glass or paint.

Dilution is a performance setting
Measure the final working solution
Labels may state millilitres per litre, a ratio or capful based on a defined cap. Calculate bucket volume accurately. More concentrate does not automatically mean more lubrication; it can leave surfactant film and make rinsing harder.
Pressure-foamer ratios must account for injector dilution. A bottle setting is not always the final panel concentration.
Water hardness
Hard water contains calcium and magnesium that react with cleaners and leave spots as droplets dry. A shampoo with chelating ingredients can help, but shade, prompt rinse and drying remain important.
Filtered or deionised final rinse reduces mineral spotting. It does not make dirty contact tools safe.
Where water is exceptionally hard, prepare smaller wash sections and rinse them immediately so mineral-rich droplets cannot dry. A drying aid may reduce towel friction, but it must be compatible with the existing coating and intended next detailing stage.
Panel temperature and working time
Dark paint can become hot even on a mild bright day. Test the surface and move into shade before applying cleaner. Wind also shortens dwell by accelerating evaporation at panel edges and mirrors.
If shampoo begins drying, re-wet with working solution and rinse promptly rather than rubbing the concentrated residue. Do not shock a very hot panel or brake disc with cold water; allow it to cool naturally first.
Preparation before contact
Let brakes and panels cool. Remove leaves and inspect for loose trim, open windows and damaged paint. Rinse from safe distance, avoiding forcing water into seals, exhausts and electrical openings.
Pre-treat insect remains, tar or iron deposits with dedicated compatible products. Scrubbing them with shampoo increases scratching.

Contact-wash technique
Wash manageable sections with straight, light passes and plenty of solution. Start at roof and glass, then upper panels, leaving sills and rear lower areas until last. Do not press harder to remove bonded material.
Rinse mitt before reloading shampoo. If the vehicle is extremely muddy, repeat pre-rinse rather than introducing immediate contact.
Foam is not the same as cleaning
Foam increases dwell and makes coverage visible, but surfactant chemistry and agitation determine cleaning. Excess foam can trap product in seals and prolong rinsing. Follow dilution instead of judging by thickness.
A low-foam shampoo may be highly effective and suitable for pressure systems.
Drying safely
Use a clean towel with blotting or low-pressure gliding. Do not use a household squeegee on dirty paint. Blow water from mirrors, handles and grille to prevent later streaks.
Dry glass separately to avoid wax residue. Reinspect in good light before applying protection.

Household detergent and unsuitable cleaners
Washing-up liquid is designed for dishes and food grease, not automotive protection, seals and optical clarity. It can strip wax, foam heavily and contain hand-care or salt additives that leave residue.
Do not use laundry, floor or general degreaser unless specifically approved for the vehicle substrate and task.
Wash-and-wax and coating preparation
Added polymers can improve gloss and water behaviour but may mask a coating’s condition or interfere with panel inspection. Before polishing or applying a coating, use the required residue-free preparation.
Do not layer protection on contaminated paint simply because it feels slick after shampoo.
Pressure-washer considerations
Use a suitable nozzle, distance and pressure. Avoid directing a concentrated jet at stone chips, wrap edges, seals, camera lenses, wheel bearings or electrical connectors. Stabilise hoses so they do not drag across paint.
Never place a hand in a pressure jet; injection injuries require emergency care.
Environmental and slip control
Wash water contains detergents, oil, brake dust and road contaminants. Use an authorised wash area, interceptor or local drainage practice. Do not allow foam into surface-water drains.
Shampoo makes floors slippery. Control pedestrian access, rinse the work area and store concentrate securely.
UK road-safety context
Cleaning must not leave slippery dressing on tyres, brake discs, pedals or controls. Lamps, number plates, windows, mirrors and cameras should be clean without residue that causes glare.
A wash is an opportunity to spot tyre damage, fluid leaks, loose trim and corrosion, not a substitute for repair.
