Mount position must preserve the driving task
Assess the real seated eye point, not the view from outside. The device should not create a blind area, cover instruments or require a long reach. Windscreen pillars, dashboard curves and mirrors already restrict sightlines, so even a small phone can conceal a pedestrian or cyclist at a junction.
Check the passenger airbag, curtain airbag, driver's knee airbag and deployment seams. A mount can become a projectile or redirect an inflating bag.

Phone size means the cased operating size
Measure width, thickness and mass with the usual case, lens ring and charging plug. Confirm the holder's jaws do not press power/volume buttons or cover the camera needed by navigation features. A soft support should grip without placing point pressure on a cracked back or swollen battery.
Test in portrait and landscape only if the mount supports both. Tighten joints by hand to the stated limit; overtightening can crack plastic or collapse a vent.

The lowest-rated part limits charging
The phone requests a supported profile, the adaptor offers one, and the cable carries it. If any element lacks the protocol or current capability, the system falls back to a lower rate. That is usually safer than forcing voltage with an unapproved trigger device.
Ignore inflated combined wattage when a port's individual limit is what matters. With two devices connected, some adaptors redistribute power and briefly interrupt charging.
Cable length, voltage drop and strain
Long, thin conductors lose more voltage and dissipate heat. A quality cable appropriate to the current keeps resistance controlled and includes robust strain relief. Coil only loosely; a tight bundle beside a heater outlet traps heat and catches controls.

Battery management reduces power when the phone is too hot or cold. Navigation, high screen brightness, poor signal, sun and cabin heating all add heat. A vent mount in front of hot airflow can make charging slower despite a high-rated adaptor.
Move the device out of direct sun when safe, use cool airflow where appropriate and remove thick insulating covers only according to the phone maker's guidance. Never chill a hot phone with liquid or a freezer.

Identify whether the circuit should be ignition-switched or permanent. Calculate continuous load, use automotive cable of adequate cross-section, protect it against abrasion and place the correct fuse close to the source. The socket body must not contact metal behind the panel.
