The spring bush lets a leaf spring change shape without metal-to-metal wear
A leaf spring becomes longer between its eyes as it flattens under load. One end may use a fixed pivot while the other uses a swinging shackle to accommodate that length change. Bushes allow rotation and isolate high-frequency vibration.
They also locate the axle longitudinally and laterally through the spring. Excess movement changes wheelbase and rear-steer behaviour, so bush condition affects handling as well as noise.

Bush constructions
Bonded rubber and sleeves
Rubber is bonded between inner and outer metal sleeves. The inner sleeve clamps stationary between brackets, while suspension movement twists the rubber. This design needs final tightening at ride position.
Pressed rubber without outer sleeve
The rubber presses directly into the spring eye and may use a separate inner tube. Correct compression and specified lubricant are essential to avoid tearing.
Split polyurethane or elastomer
Two halves install from each side around a central sleeve. They can rotate differently from bonded rubber and need the supplied compatible lubricant. Hardness changes noise and articulation.
Threaded or metal bush

How bonded bushes move
When the pivot bolt clamps the inner sleeve, it should not rotate against the bolt. The spring eye moves relative to it by twisting the rubber. Tightening while the axle hangs fixes the rubber in a twisted state once the vehicle is lowered.
That preload reduces travel and accelerates tearing. Use the specified ride-height measurement, ballast or simulated position before final torque. Do not loosen U-bolts merely to reach a pivot unless the procedure requires it.

Inspection under load and unloaded
Begin with the vehicle on level ground at normal load. Compare ride height, shackle angle, spring centring and axle position side to side. Look for rubber separation, polished movement marks and bracket contact.
Then raise safely with chassis and axle supported as the procedure states. Lever only at approved points with modest force and compare displacement to limits. Suspension load can hide or exaggerate movement, so inspect in both conditions.
Spring and hanger condition
Check every leaf for cracks, especially around the centre bolt and eye, and inspect interleaf wear, clamps and corrosion. A stretched or cracked eye cannot safely hold a new bush. Replace the spring or use an approved repair.
Chassis hangers carry concentrated load. Rust around welds, elongated bolt holes and cracked brackets require structural assessment. A new bush must not be fitted into a weakened mounting.
Shackles and bolts
Shackle plates should remain parallel and holes round. Bent plates change spring path; corroded pins reduce strength. Use specified bolts, sleeves, nuts and washers, often with prevailing-torque or single-use requirements.
Do not substitute fully threaded general bolts where a smooth shank should bear in the sleeve. Bolt length must allow correct nut engagement without bottoming or contacting bodywork.
Stored-energy and lifting safety
Leaf springs support the axle and can rotate shackles when bolts are removed. Support the chassis so it cannot fall and support the axle so spring load is controlled. Raise or lower the axle gradually to neutralise a bolt before extraction.
Never place fingers between spring and bracket to align holes. Use suitable drifts and controlled lifting. Keep clear of a spring that may release from a seized bolt suddenly.
Removing seized bushes and bolts
Corrosion can bond the bolt to the inner sleeve. Penetrating oil may help, but heating rubber produces toxic fumes and can ignite underseal, fuel vapour or brake-fluid residue. Cutting needs shielding around pipes, wiring and the fuel tank.
Use a press or approved puller with adapters that support the eye. Burning out rubber and sawing the outer sleeve risks scoring the eye and should be controlled by trained technicians. Never hammer against an unsupported spring eye.
Pressing a bonded bush
- Confirm exact bush, orientation, press direction, bolt parts and torque procedure.
- Secure and support vehicle, chassis, axle and spring independently as required.
- Mark spring position and orientation before removing pivot and shackle hardware.
- Remove the spring or create approved press access without twisting brake hoses.
- Support the complete eye circumference and press on the specified outer sleeve.
- Clean the bore without removing metal and inspect roundness, cracks and corrosion.
- Align voids, arrows or flanges to the published datum.
- Use the specified temporary assembly lubricant and press squarely to depth.
- Install pivot hardware loosely, set suspension at normal-height datum and final-torque.
- Check shackle travel, axle alignment, hose/wire clearance and road behaviour.
Split-bush installation
Clean the eye and install halves in the correct direction, then insert the lubricated central sleeve. Use only the supplied grease; petroleum products can attack polyurethane or rubber and contamination can create persistent squeak.
Some rotating designs final-tighten differently from bonded rubber because the bush turns on the sleeve. Follow the manufacturer instructions rather than applying bonded-bush assumptions.
Pair and axle considerations
Bushes on the same axle experience similar age and load. Inspect and often renew corresponding sides to preserve consistent compliance. If one spring is removed, compare camber, eye condition and leaf pack with the other.
Do not mix significantly different bush hardness or void orientation across an axle. It can create asymmetric steer under braking and acceleration.
Alignment and U-bolts
The spring centre bolt locates the axle pad, and U-bolts clamp the axle to the spring. Inspect location and torque without reusing U-bolts where prohibited. A loose axle can mimic bush movement and damage the spring.
Measure thrust angle and wheel alignment after replacement, particularly if wear was severe or hangers were disturbed. Steering wheel centre alone does not prove rear axle alignment.
