What this collection contains—and what it does not
The handle uses the word “tyre”, but the grouped products are service tools and consumables: gauges, fitting compounds, repair chemicals, emergency sealants, regrooving blades and related kits. Complete road tyres are not the subject of this page. Selection must therefore begin with the operation being performed, not tyre size alone.
A gauge measures; a lubricant supports fitting; cement forms part of an approved repair system; sealant may provide limited temporary mobility; and a regrooving blade removes tread rubber from a purpose-designed commercial casing. Their roles must never be combined into a claim that a worn or damaged tyre has become roadworthy.

Pressure measurement and performance
Inflation supports load, controls casing deflection and shapes the contact patch. Underinflation increases flexing and heat; overinflation can reduce compliance and alter wear. Pressure rises as a tyre warms, so routine comparison should follow the vehicle maker's cold-pressure method. Different axles, payloads, towing conditions and wheel/tyre options may have different settings.
Choose a gauge whose working range places the expected pressure well within its scale. Resolution is the displayed increment; accuracy is closeness to the true value. A fine display does not prove calibration. Protect gauges from drops, dirt and liquid sealant, and periodically compare or calibrate them against a traceable reference appropriate to the workshop.
Correct pressure-check sequence
- Find the approved pressure for the exact vehicle, axle, load and tyre setup.
- Check when tyres are cold under the maker's defined conditions.
- Inspect the valve stem and remove the cap without side-loading the valve.
- Apply the gauge squarely until hissing stops and record the stable result.
- Adjust with suitable inflation equipment; do not bleed a hot tyre to its cold figure.
- Repeat the reading and compare with other tyres on the same axle.
- Leak-check a persistently low tyre and refit a sealing valve cap.
- Reset or relearn TPMS only by the vehicle's procedure.
Tread depth and UK legal checks
For most cars and light vehicles covered by the familiar UK rule, tread must be at least 1.6 mm throughout a continuous band comprising the central three-quarters of tread breadth, around the entire circumference. Different rules apply to some vehicle categories, and a tyre can be dangerous or illegal for reasons unrelated to depth. Use current official guidance for the vehicle being assessed.
Measure several grooves at multiple positions while checking shoulders, feathering, local flat spots, cuts, bulges, exposed cords, ageing and foreign objects. Tread-wear indicators are a quick warning but do not replace measurement. The legal minimum is not a recommended wet-weather replacement target.

Mounting compounds
Why lubrication is controlled
A suitable compound lowers friction while the bead passes over the rim flange and helps controlled seating. It should then dry as intended so the tyre does not rotate on the wheel. Excess liquid can pool inside, affect electronics or encourage corrosion.
Chemical compatibility
Tyre rubber, rim coatings and TPMS components need compatible chemistry. Petroleum grease can swell rubber; household detergents may leave water and corrosive salts. Dilute concentrates only as documented, use clean applicators and prevent contamination of the inner liner.
Bead seating safety
Inspect wheel and bead before fitting, use a guarded inflation arrangement appropriate to the assembly and keep the body outside the trajectory zone. Never exceed the tyre/wheel maker's seating limits or use flammable “explosive” seating methods.
Puncture repair boundaries
A proper repair begins after removing the tyre from the wheel for internal examination. Technicians assess penetration position, angle and size, liner condition, evidence of underinflated running, secondary damage and previous repairs. Sidewall, shoulder and structural damage generally sit outside routine tread repair zones. Run-flat and specialist tyres may impose additional restrictions.
Cement is one component in a compatible repair system; it does not work as a standalone filler. Preparation, plug/patch type, drying, stitching and final sealing follow the system instructions and current recognised repair practice. Mixing chemicals and patches from unverified systems can compromise adhesion.

Emergency sealant limitations
Sealant can sometimes slow air loss from a small tread penetration long enough to reach professional help. It may not seal cuts, sidewall damage, bead leaks, valve faults or a tyre displaced from the rim. Follow the product and vehicle speed, distance, pressure and compatibility limits. Stop if pressure cannot be maintained or the vehicle vibrates.
Sealant aerosols can be pressurised and may contain flammable propellant. Keep away from heat and ignition sources and tell the tyre technician exactly what was used. Some compounds are compatible with pressure sensors when used as instructed; this must not be assumed for every product.
Regrooving: specialist commercial-tyre work
Regrooving cuts extra groove depth into undertread deliberately provided by the tyre manufacturer. Only tyres marked and documented as regroovable should be considered, using the manufacturer's pattern, blade shape, width and depth. The operator must preserve the specified rubber above the structural package.
This is not recutting an ordinary worn passenger tyre. Cutting too deeply can expose belts, increase heat concentration and make the casing unsuitable for further service or retreading. Regrooving tools have heated blades: control temperature, ventilation, hand position and power isolation when changing blades.

UK MOT inspection checks tyre tread, condition, compatibility, valve condition and relevant pressure-monitoring requirements. Construction and Use law applies on the road independently of test timing. A gauge or repair product does not excuse a tyre below the applicable standard. Collect removed balance material, rubber, solvent waste and sealant rather than releasing them to drains. Keep volatile products ventilated and away from ignition sources. Tyre inflation and repair should be performed by trained people using maintained equipment and suitable guarding.
