How a manual day/night prism works
Two reflections provide different intensity
Wedge glass has a strong reflection from the coated rear surface and a weak reflection from the front surface. The lever changes their angle relative to the driver.
The low-glare position reduces brightness but also image detail. It does not replace correct use of exterior mirrors and direct observation.
Electrochromic dimming
An electrochromic layer changes transmission when a control circuit detects darkness ahead and bright light behind. Dimming should be even and reversible.

Matching the replacement
Use VIN and build date, then compare the windscreen button, release mechanism, stem length, housing, connector and all features. Right-/left-hand-drive layouts may alter viewing angle or cover shape.
A matching plug does not guarantee pinout or network compatibility. Check original part number and approved supersession before applying power.
Windscreen mounting systems
Common systems slide over a bonded metal button, rotate onto a bayonet or lock with a small screw or spring. The release direction matters.

Assessing glass condition
Cracks, missing areas, severe desilvering or distortion can reduce a clear view. A sharp broken edge also presents an occupant hazard.
Do not attach replacement glass over a loose backing or leaking cell unless the repair system is explicitly designed for it. Extra mass can overload the adjustment joint.
Electrochromic cell leakage
A failed cell can show bubbles, a brown edge or liquid. Avoid skin and trim contact, ventilate the area and follow safe disposal information for the part.
Protect the dashboard and clean any residue with compatible methods. Replacing only an outer reflective overlay does not repair a leaking assembly.

The original button position, surface preparation, adhesive chemistry and cure conditions control strength. Household glue or an extra button bonded over residue is unsuitable.

Transferring covers and wiring

Camera and ADAS precautions
The forward camera is usually separate from the mirror but shares the windscreen area. Never touch its lens, alter its bracket or obscure its shroud opening.
If the camera, bracket or windscreen is disturbed, follow the vehicle’s static or dynamic calibration requirement. A clear-looking image does not confirm geometric accuracy.
Adjustment and driver position
Set the seat, steering and head restraint first, then aim the mirror through the rear window from the normal driving posture. It should remain stable over normal road vibration.
