HSE guidance considers work rate, clothing, radiant heat, air movement, humidity and the individual as well as temperature. A person lifting outdoors and a seated driver can need different settings in the same weather.
Use heated clothing within a wider cold-work plan that includes shelter, suitable ordinary layers, warm facilities, exposure scheduling and supervision where risk warrants it.
Personal warmth does not correct a cold workplace

Start with the intended environment
Check ingress protection, permitted temperature, rain exposure, washing method and whether the product is workwear, leisure clothing or motorcycle equipment. Marketing terms such as weather-resistant do not define immersion or chemical resistance.
Ordinary battery garments should not enter an explosive atmosphere or flammable-vapour area without a specific assessed approval. A switch or damaged cell can provide an ignition source.
Fit controls heat distribution
A garment that hangs away may feel ineffective, while tight folds can concentrate pressure and heat. Maintain circulation, full movement and space for moisture transport without bunching the heating panel.
Try the complete clothing system in the working posture. Seated, kneeling and overhead positions move battery pockets, harness straps and cables differently from standing.
Other PPE keeps priority
Underlayers must not compromise flame-resistant, antistatic, chemical, high-visibility or arc-protective performance. The combination needs approval; adding an untested heated layer can change heat transfer, static behaviour and garment overlap.
Do not place a battery beneath a tight fall-arrest strap or where respiratory equipment seals, seat belts or tool belts press it into the body.
High-visibility areas must remain visible
An outer heated jacket may cover required reflective and fluorescent material, while an unfastened certified outer coat may no longer perform as intended. Select the ensemble as a whole.
Keep controls and cable exits from obscuring identification, rescue points or access to emergency equipment.
Heat settings are not universal temperatures
Named low, medium and high modes often describe power programmes rather than a guaranteed skin temperature. Battery charge, ambient cold, compression and layers change the sensation.
Begin low, allow the stated stabilisation time and reassess. Do not repeatedly select maximum output because a thick outer layer delays the feeling of warmth.

Some users need additional assessment

Work rate can reverse the need for heating
Muscular activity generates substantial heat. A jacket set for standing inspection may become excessive during tyre handling, loading or snow clearance, especially beneath waterproof PPE.
Plan setting changes before starting high-effort work. Moist inner layers cool rapidly when activity stops, so moisture management remains important.
Moving between environments needs anticipation
Switch down before entering a heated cab, workshop or welfare space. The battery system continues producing heat while outer layers prevent rapid cooling.
Likewise, turn on in time for a cold exposure rather than using a sudden highest setting after hands have lost dexterity.
Battery chemistry needs physical protection
Lithium-ion packs store enough energy to burn if crushed, penetrated, shorted, overheated or incorrectly charged. Keep the pocket closed, protect the pack from impacts and never sit or kneel directly on it.
Inspect case seams, terminals and cable strain relief. Swelling, leakage, cracking, hissing, unusual odour or repeated overheating requires immediate quarantine under the site's battery emergency plan.
Use the matched charger and supply
Voltage, charge control, connector polarity and cell management must match the approved pack. A plug that fits does not establish electrical compatibility.
Charge on a stable non-combustible surface with ventilation, away from heat, moisture, combustible stock and escape routes. Follow supervision, detection and unplugging rules from the fire assessment.
Runtime is an estimate, not a safety reserve
High output, old cells and cold conditions reduce available duration. Do not plan isolated work on a claimed maximum runtime without a separate cold-exposure and communication arrangement.
Changing to a higher-capacity unapproved pack may alter protection, weight and current. Carry spare batteries only in protected cases with terminals isolated.
Vehicle-powered garments need release planning
Motorcycle and cab systems may connect to a vehicle outlet or controller. Confirm voltage, fuse, route and current capacity, keeping the lead away from steering, pedals, hot parts and moving components.
A connection should separate safely as intended without snagging the rider or preventing emergency exit. Disconnect before dismounting or servicing the vehicle.
Washing protects both textile and circuit
Remove the battery and close or cap connectors exactly as instructed. Use the permitted programme, detergent, temperature and bag; fabric conditioner, bleach or solvent can attack coatings or fibres.
Do not wring heating panels, iron over them or accelerate drying on a heater. Reconnect only when the garment and port are fully dry.

Storage separates pack and garment
