Body Protection

Workshop body protection includes workwear, coveralls, aprons, knee protection, safety footwear, high-visibility garments and task-specific protective clothing. Its purpose is to reduce residual exposure to impact, abrasion, sharp edges, fluids, heat, weather, poor visibility or electrical hazards after safer methods have already been applied. Ordinary clothing and genuine personal protective equipment can look similar, so selection must be based on a risk assessment and declared protective performance.

Identify the task, hazard, exposure route and required body area before choosing size or style. Check the product marking, instructions, relevant performance standard, protection class and limitations. Chemical splash, welding, electrical work, chainsaw use and traffic management require different materials and construction. Safety footwear varies in toe protection, penetration resistance, grip, water resistance and electrical properties. No garment protects against every chemical, temperature or mechanical hazard.

Fit and compatibility determine real protection. Clothing must cover the exposed area without loose fabric approaching rotating machinery. Sleeves, gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, respirators and harnesses must work together without opening gaps or interfering with seals. Footwear needs secure heel hold and a sole suited to the actual floor contamination. Try equipment in the working posture, including kneeling, reaching and vehicle access, rather than judging it while standing still.

Inspect before every use for tears, worn soles, failed fasteners, contaminated fabric, damaged protective inserts and unreadable markings. Follow the manufacturer's cleaning, drying and storage instructions: heat, solvent, sunlight or incorrect laundering can remove protective treatments. Quarantine equipment after significant impact, chemical saturation or electrical exposure until its continued safety is established. Do not repair certified protective areas with generic thread, glue or patches.

UK workplace PPE is the last line of defence, not permission to leave a hazard uncontrolled. Employers must assess suitability, provide required PPE to covered workers, maintain and store it, and provide information, instruction and training. Users must wear it correctly and report defects. Risk assessment

Define the hazard before comparing products

Record substance, energy, sharpness, temperature, duration, frequency and likely body contact. Include reasonably foreseeable spills, tool breakage and emergency exit.

Consider who performs the task, their fit needs and medical factors. Reassess when equipment, product, environment or work method changes.

Hierarchy of controls

Remove unnecessary exposure, substitute safer chemistry and use enclosures, guards, extraction or remote handling. Organise access, training and maintenance next.

PPE covers the risk that remains. If a garment is the only control against a severe preventable hazard, revisit the work design.

Declared protection and markings

Read the label and user information for conformity marking, manufacturer, model, size, standard and performance class. Check that documentation applies to that exact product.

A standard number without class or use limitation may be incomplete. Counterfeit or altered labels cannot be validated by appearance alone.

Fit and coverage

Protective panels and closures must remain over the exposed area during bending, reaching and kneeling. Excess fabric can snag; tight clothing can split or restrict escape.

Use the manufacturer's size system and adjustment. Do not roll sleeves or cut legs if that removes coverage or changes a certified seam.

Compatibility with other PPE

Glove cuffs may need to sit over or under sleeves according to splash direction. Coveralls must not break a respirator, harness or eye-protection seal.

Try the complete ensemble during realistic movement. Extra layers can reduce hearing, vision and dexterity or raise heat stress.

Workwear versus protective clothing

Durable trousers can resist ordinary wear without claiming a safety performance. Protective clothing is designed and assessed against one or more defined risks.

Do not infer flame, chemical or arc protection from thick fabric. Verify the declaration for the exact garment and use condition.

Chemical resistance

Chemicals permeate, penetrate seams or degrade material at different rates. Product data must cover the named substance, concentration, temperature and exposure type.

Contaminated clothing can hold a substance against skin during removal. Plan safe doffing, emergency washing and disposal before work begins.

Heat, flame and welding exposure

Flame spread, convective heat, radiant heat, molten-metal splash and electric arc are distinct hazards with different test methods.

Keep pockets and cuffs arranged so hot particles cannot collect. Oil or grease contamination can destroy flame-resistant performance.

High-visibility garments

Fluorescent background material supports daytime visibility; retroreflective bands return light at night. Required area and arrangement depend on the marked class.

Wear the garment closed as designed. Dirt, an overcoat or a large logo can reduce visible area below its intended performance.

Knee protection

Integrated pads, pocket inserts and independent protectors distribute load differently. Match inserts to the approved trouser pocket and orientation.

Protection does not remove the need to limit kneeling time, clear sharp debris and use lifting equipment or a mat where practicable.

Safety footwear

Toe caps, penetration-resistant inserts, sole grip, antistatic behaviour and water resistance are separate properties. Select the combination required by the assessment.

Oil-resistant is not the same as slip-proof on every contaminated floor. Housekeeping and spill control remain primary.

Electrical and hybrid-vehicle work

Electrical hazards need a system-specific safe working procedure and appropriately rated equipment. Ordinary rubber boots or workwear are not evidence of high-voltage protection.

Inspect dates, test records and storage for electrical PPE where required. Use trained personnel, isolation and verified absence of voltage before relying on clothing.

Moving machinery and loose clothing

Loose sleeves, drawstrings and unsecured high-visibility vests can be caught by rotating shafts, belts and drills. Close fasteners and contain hair and jewellery.

Protective gloves or clothing may increase entanglement risk near rotation. The risk assessment and guarding must define when they are removed or prohibited.

Comfort, mobility and heat stress

Heavy or impermeable clothing traps heat and moisture, reducing concentration and safe movement. Work rate, ambient temperature and duration must be managed.

Cleaning and laundering

Follow the care label for temperature, detergent, cycles and re-treatment. Domestic laundering may spread hazardous contamination or remove a protective finish.

Do not use bleach, solvent or tumble heat unless permitted. Keep records where protective performance depends on limited wash cycles.

Decontamination and disposal

Identify contamination before handling used PPE. Some substances require specialist decontamination or disposal rather than workshop washing.

Bag and label affected clothing, prevent secondary exposure and follow the safety data and site procedure. Never take contaminated garments home casually.

Storage

Store clean and dry away from sunlight, heat, chemicals and sharp tools. Keep boots upright and protective inserts in their designed shape.

Repair and replacement

Only approved repairs preserve certified seams and materials. A generic patch may burn, permeate or tear differently from the original.
