Fibre, cell and backing construction
Microfibre quality depends on fibre fineness, split, blend, pile density and finishing rather than one percentage alone. A long pile can engulf particles, but overly heavy backing reduces flexibility and makes rinsing harder. Cuffs and internal seams should remain soft and clear of paint. A foam core carries solution but can retain detergent if not rinsed through.
Natural wool varies in fibre length and needs pH-compatible care. High heat, harsh alkali and twisting can felt or weaken it. One medium cannot serve every zone
Wheel faces, arches, exhaust tips and lower sills collect metallic and mineral particles. Assign separate colours or labels and store them apart. A wheel mitt should never return to paint even after an ordinary rinse, because brake debris can remain deep within fibres. Likewise, engine-bay tools belong in their own system.
Door shuts and fuel recesses can harbour grease that contaminates the main mitt. Clean them with dedicated media at the appropriate point, ensuring electrical and fuel areas tolerate the method. Never reach into a closing door or powered charge flap.
Lubrication begins with shampoo dilution
Shampoo reduces friction, wets soil and helps carry particles in solution. Mix it to the product's stated ratio using a measure. For coatings, matte finishes, wraps and paint-protection film, check shampoo compatibility and any restrictions on pressure or additives. A wax-containing wash may alter the appearance of matte paint or mask coating behaviour. Strong degreaser can weaken protection and dry rubbers. Patch test unfamiliar combinations.
A low-marring wash sequence
Secure windows, roof and charge or fuel doors as required, then assess contamination. Bird fouling, tar, iron fallout and tree sap need targeted compatible softening; do not scrub them repeatedly with the main mitt. Rinse loose grit. Work roof and upper glass before upper body panels, then progress towards dirtier lower areas. Use short straight overlapping passes with almost no added pressure. A grit guard can keep some settled debris below the working area, but pushing a mitt hard against it may damage fibres and resuspend particles. Replace visibly dirty water. Two buckets are not a guarantee when both contain grit.
Do not let shampoo dry while working around the vehicle. Rinse completed areas as conditions demand and monitor wind. Keep hoses clear of lower panels by using guides where useful. A dirty hose pulled across paint can undo careful media choice.

If media falls, a quick dunk is insufficient because small stones lodge in pile and foam. Place it in a separate container. Do not pick visible grit out and resume; launder, dry and inspect from both sides. If there is doubt, reassign it to a non-paint task and label it.
Avoid scrubbing badges, film edges, damaged clearcoat and cracked trim. High spots and panel edges have thinner coating and receive greater contact pressure. Use a detail tool designed for complex areas. Never wash a panel with a mitt that has touched a tyre or brake component.
Rinsing, drying and post-wash inspection
Rinse from upper sections down with a flow appropriate to seals and trim. Remove all shampoo from crevices without directing high pressure at film edges, sensors or damaged seals. Run-off makes floors slippery, so manage hoses and pedestrian access. Use a separate clean drying towel or filtered air system; the wash mitt should not become a drying tool.
Inspect paint in diffuse and focused light for remaining contamination, streaks and new marks. Do not keep contact washing a bonded deposit. Move to an appropriate decontamination method after evaluating the surface. Dry door shuts and mirrors to prevent later drips, using dedicated cloths where grease is present.
