A dash cam records the road ahead and, on suitable systems, the rear or cabin to provide a time-stamped account of a journey or incident. Useful evidence depends on readable detail, correct exposure, stable mounting, reliable storage and accurate time—not resolution claims alone. A camera must never obstruct the driver's view or interfere with airbags, mirrors, sensors or controls.

Choose by field of view, verified day and night image quality, frame rate, high-dynamic-range performance, storage format and endurance-card support. Consider front, rear or multi-channel coverage, GPS, microphone control, Wi-Fi/app support, screen, polarising filter, parking mode, temperature range and power requirements. Confirm cable length and whether a hardwire kit includes low-voltage battery protection.

Plan the installation from the normal driving position. Mount within a legally acceptable area, usually high behind the mirror where the lens has a clear swept view and the body does not intrude into critical windscreen zones. Do not place it over a frit pattern that prevents adhesion or beside an ADAS camera where reflections, heat or trim removal can disturb calibration.

Route cables behind trim only after identifying curtain-airbag deployment paths and clip locations. Never cross an airbag with a loose wire. A hardwire connection needs the correct permanent and ignition-switched fuse circuits, fuse taps of the right orientation and rating, a protected earth and a battery cut-off threshold suited to the vehicle. Hybrid and electric vehicles still rely on a limited 12 V battery.

Use a genuine high-endurance memory card of supported capacity, format and test it regularly, and set time zone, date, loop length and event sensitivity. Review sample footage in darkness and rain, confirm number plates are readable at realistic distance and ensure parking mode does not flatten the battery. A front camera covers the primary road view. Rear cameras record following traffic; cabin cameras can document occupants or side windows but add privacy obligations. Multi-channel units share processing and card bandwidth.

Confirm each channel's resolution and frame rate when all are active, not the front-only maximum.

Windscreen position

Sit in the normal driving position and map the camera body, cable and mount against the driver's view. UK windscreen-obstruction and MOT requirements distinguish critical swept areas; use current official guidance and a discreet high mounting.

The lens should look through a clean wiper-swept area. Do not mount on dotted ceramic frit unless the adhesive system permits it.

ADAS and rain-sensor clearance

Forward cameras and rain/light sensors occupy the mirror area. Keep the dash cam and reflections outside their field and do not remove calibrated brackets. Trim covers may contain optical gel pads and wiring.

If a camera bracket or windscreen is disturbed, follow calibration requirements. A clear dashboard warning is not proof alignment remains correct.

Mounting stability

Clean glass with the adhesive maker's compatible method, allow it to dry and apply at the stated temperature. Hold pressure and cure before hanging the camera. A loose camera creates rolling-shutter vibration and can fall during braking.

Do not glue over demister conductors or apply household adhesive that attacks glass coating and trim.

Plug-in power

A 12 V socket adapter is reversible and avoids fuse-box work, but sockets may remain live or switch off after a delay. Secure the adapter and cable without overloading splitters.

Use the supplied voltage converter. A camera expecting 5 V USB must not receive direct 12 V.

Hardwire circuits

Identify permanent and ignition-switched circuits with wiring data and measurement after vehicle sleep. Avoid airbags, ABS, power steering, engine management and other safety-critical fuse positions.

A fuse tap must fit the fuse standard, orient its supply/load correctly and protect both original and new circuits with appropriate ratings. The added cable needs its own fuse close to source.

Earth connections

Use an approved body earth stud with clean sound contact and the correct ring terminal. Do not loosen structural or restraint-system bolts without procedure, and do not trap a ring under painted trim screws.

Voltage-drop test the converter under camera load. Poor earth can cause resets and radio interference.

12 V battery management

Stop-start, hybrid and EV vehicles monitor a modest 12 V battery. Long parking recording can leave insufficient energy to wake control systems even though the traction battery is charged.

Choose a conservative cut-off and time. Test settled parasitic current after modules sleep and ensure the hardwire kit itself shuts down.

Memory-card endurance

Dash cams overwrite continuously, a demanding workload. Use a genuine high-endurance card from the supported list and capacity. Counterfeit or unsuitable cards can appear normal until an incident file is corrupt.

Format in the camera at the specified interval, review health warnings and replace after write-life or errors.

Loop recording and protected files

Loop recording divides footage into short files and overwrites the oldest unprotected clip. G-sensor events are locked; if sensitivity is high, potholes can fill protected storage and stop recording.

Review and archive incidents, then clear protected space according to instructions. Confirm seamless overlap between file boundaries.

Time, GPS and metadata

Set date, time zone and daylight-saving behaviour, then verify after power loss. GPS can synchronise time but may take time to acquire indoors or beneath heated/metallic windscreens.

Speed overlays can be useful evidence but require accurate GPS and thoughtful privacy choices.

Image setup

Aim roughly one-third sky and two-thirds road while preserving horizon and bonnet reference as the maker suggests. Too much sky causes the road to underexpose; too low loses signals and context.

Remove protective lens film, clean both lens and windscreen and verify a polarising filter does not create rainbow artefacts or darken too much at night.

Night and rain verification

Review actual exported files on a larger display. Check headlamp flare, approaching plates, dark-side detail, wiper sweep and reflections from dashboard trim. Rear cameras must see through clear demisted glass.

Do not rely only on the camera's small preview or app-compressed stream.

Audio and privacy

Cabin audio can capture private conversations. Provide clear notice to regular passengers or employees and follow applicable data-protection and workplace rules. Use microphone mute when recording is unnecessary.

Do not publish identifiable people, registration numbers or private locations casually. Retain footage only for a justified period and secure exports.

Firmware and apps

Use official firmware for the exact model/revision, stable power and the stated card process. An interrupted update can disable the camera. Review app permissions and account security.

Do not leave default Wi-Fi passwords or an open hotspot that exposes recordings.

Interference and DAB/radio reception

Poor power converters and rear-camera cables can radiate interference into DAB, GPS and keyless systems. Route away from antennas where possible and use compliant supplied components.

Diagnose by powering the camera off, then separating power supply and cable effects. Ferrites do not correct a defective converter.

Maintenance

Monthly and before long trips, clean lenses, inspect mount/cables, verify time, play recent front/rear files and check card health. Re-test parking cut-off after battery replacement or coding.
