Exterior Cleaning

Exterior cleaning removes road film, salt, insects, bird deposits, brake dust and bonded contamination from paint, glass, wheels, tyres, plastics and metal trim. A safe process uses different products and tools for different soils: pre-wash loosens heavy dirt, shampoo lubricates contact washing, specialist cleaners address iron or tar, and drying materials remove water before mineral spots form.

Choose products by surface, contamination and existing protection rather than fragrance or foam alone. Confirm dilution, pH, maximum dwell time, temperature range and compatibility with matte paint, wraps, polished metal, bare aluminium, carbon components, soft convertible roofs, ceramic coatings and waxes. A wheel cleaner safe on factory lacquer may attack an uncoated, anodised or damaged finish.

Work on cool panels out of strong sun where possible. Rinse loose grit first, apply chemicals from lower areas upward when instructed and never allow them to dry. Pressure washers require distance and a suitable fan pattern; concentrated jets can lift damaged paint, cut rubber, force water into lamps and harm radiator fins, cameras, sensors or convertible seals.

Reduce scratching by separating wheel tools from bodywork, using clean buckets or a controlled rinseless method, washing from cleaner upper panels towards dirtier lower areas and rinsing the mitt frequently. No contact wash is literally scratch-proof. If gritty contamination remains, stop and rinse rather than pressing harder. Remove bird lime promptly but soften it before gentle lifting because both the deposit and abrasion can etch clearcoat.

Before washing, close windows and roofs, retract or secure powered accessories as instructed, and remove loose items that could trap tools. Note existing chips, peeling lacquer and damaged seals so pressure and chemistry can be reduced around vulnerable areas.

Dry with clean high-absorbency towels or controlled filtered air, keeping material away from the ground. Inspect under several lighting angles and protect any chips or corrosion exposed by cleaning. Wear product-specified gloves and eye protection, avoid inhaling mist and prevent runoff entering surface-water drains. Store chemicals labelled, sealed and frost-free, never in drink containers. Vehicle finishes are thin layered systems. Clearcoat provides gloss and environmental resistance, yet abrasive grit, mineral deposits and strong chemicals can mark it. Wheels, tyres, glass and trim use different materials with different tolerances.

Understand the contamination

Loose particulate soil

Dust, sand and dried mud are abrasive. Remove them with flowing water and pre-wash rather than rubbing. Mud trapped in wheel arches and chassis seams also holds salt and moisture.

Oily road film

Traffic film combines fuel residue, tyre material and atmospheric pollution. Surfactants and alkaline cleaners break its bond, but strength must suit the surface and existing protection.

Bonded deposits

Iron fallout, tar, tree sap and mineral scale may survive shampoo. Identify each and use a dedicated compatible product rather than repeated aggressive scrubbing.

Biological contamination

Bird deposits and insects contain chemicals that can etch hot clearcoat. Soften and remove promptly without grinding them into the finish.

Pre-wash and snow foam

A pre-wash solution loosens dirt so the rinse carries more away. Thick foam is not proof of cleaning power; surfactant chemistry, dilution at the panel and dwell matter. A pressure-washer foam lance can dilute product beyond the bottle mixture.

Apply evenly to cool panels and monitor constantly. Work in sections if weather makes drying likely. Rinse thoroughly from top down, including crevices where concentrated product can remain.

Pressure-washer safety

Use a broad fan nozzle, maintain safe distance and approach sensitive areas cautiously. Never direct a concentrated jet at skin; injection injury requires emergency medical treatment. Keep electrical plugs and extension connections dry and protected by suitable residual-current devices.

Avoid tyre sidewall damage, loose paint, stone chips, camera seals, radar faces, fabric roofs, badges and open window edges. Radiator and condenser fins bend easily. Do not spray directly into exhaust after-treatment outlets while hot.

Contact washing

Use automotive shampoo at its measured dilution, a clean soft mitt and sufficient solution. Wash one manageable panel area with light pressure, turning or rinsing the mitt before it becomes loaded. Lower sills and rear panels usually hold the most grit and should be last.

Two buckets with a grit guard can reduce contamination returned to the mitt, but they do not guarantee safety. Multiple clean mitts or a carefully managed rinseless method are alternatives. Never place used tools on the ground and return them to paint.

Clean wheels when cool. A hot disc heats the rim and flashes cleaner dry. Rinse callipers and crevices, then move the vehicle slightly after drying if needed to expose water trapped around wheel hardware. Apply tyre dressing only to clean dry sidewalls, never tread.

Iron and tar removal

Iron removers react with ferrous particles and often change colour. The colour indicates a reaction, not complete cleaning or safe unlimited dwell. Avoid inhaling vapour and rinse thoroughly.

Tar removers use solvents that can affect fresh paint, plastics, adhesives and protection. Spot-treat cool surfaces with minimal product and do not let dissolved tar spread. Wash residue afterwards as instructed.

Clay and mechanical decontamination

Clay media shear bonded material from paint and glass. Use ample compatible lubricant and very light pressure. Fold or clean clay frequently; discard it if dropped. Synthetic mitts and towels also require cleaning.

Mechanical decontamination can mar paint even when performed carefully, especially on soft clearcoat. Plan polishing only if paint thickness and condition permit. Do not clay matte finishes or wraps without specific approval.

Glass cleaning

Use a residue-free automotive glass cleaner and separate towels. Lower side windows slightly to clean the top edge, then restore seals. Avoid ammonia or strong solvent on tint film, plastics, cameras and sensor housings unless approved.

Do not apply highly repellent coating within camera or wiper zones unless compatible with the vehicle. Smearing can also arise from contaminated wiper blades, not just glass.

Matte paint, wraps and sensitive trim

Matte finishes scatter light through their texture. Abrasive polish, wax filling and spot rubbing create glossy patches that cannot be blended conventionally. Use products specifically approved for matte surfaces.

Vinyl wraps have exposed edges and adhesives sensitive to heat and solvent. Keep pressure away from edges and test cleaners. Black piano trim scratches readily; use fresh soft tools and minimal contact.

Drying and water spots

Hard-water droplets leave calcium and magnesium deposits as they evaporate. Work quickly in shade, use filtered rinse water where practical and dry with clean high-quality towels. Lay and lift or make gentle supported passes rather than pressing heavily.

Air blowers help clear mirrors, grilles and badges but can spread dirt from unclean crevices. Use filtered controlled air and hearing protection where needed. Do not aim high-pressure air into body cavities or directly at skin.

Protection products

Waxes, sealants and coatings add a sacrificial layer and change water behaviour. They do not prevent stone chips or all scratches. Bonding depends on clean compatible paint and may require decontamination or panel preparation.

Observe cure time, humidity and water-exposure limits. Avoid windscreen, brake, tyre tread and sensor contamination. Layer only products known to be compatible.

  7. Complete a final thorough rinse, including gaps and seals.

Chemical handling and environmental control

Wear gloves and eye protection specified by the product and avoid aerosol inhalation. Never mix cleaners: acids, alkalis and chlorine-containing products can react dangerously. Use original or clearly labelled containers, away from children, pets and food.

Road dirt contains oil, metals and detergents. Use a wash area connected to an appropriate foul-water or treatment system and comply with local restrictions. Capture concentrated wheel and engine-bay runoff rather than allowing it into surface drains.

Cleaning reveals defects: cracked lamps, corroded wheel fasteners, cut tyres, loose trim, stone chips and blocked camera lenses. Address them rather than covering them with dressing. Number plates, lamps, windows, mirrors and driver-assistance sensors need clear unobstructed surfaces.

Cleaning products do not make an unsafe tyre, damaged windscreen or failed lamp MOT-compliant. Keep polish and coatings away from controls and use only screen-safe products in the driver's field of view.
