Protection is selected by hazard, exposure route and consequence
The eye is vulnerable to a particle small enough to pass through a side gap, while the face can be burned or cut even when the eyes remain covered. Selection therefore starts with what can be released, its direction and energy, and whether the event is a brief impact, sustained dust cloud, liquid splash, radiation or heat.
Engineering controls remain the first line of defence. PPE manages residual risk and must be supported by training, supervision, cleaning and timely replacement.

Read the declaration, markings and instructions as a system
The frame, lens, visor carrier and replacement lens may have separate markings and limits. Confirm the product's conformity documentation, intended environment, impact class, optical performance and any dust, droplet, molten-metal, heat, radiation or arc claim. Do not infer performance from thickness or colour.
Only use replacement lenses and accessories identified for the protector. An unapproved visor can alter impact retention, optical quality or helmet balance.
Lens materials and coatings
Polycarbonate is widely used because it combines low mass and impact resistance, but it can scratch and may be attacked by solvents. Acetate and other polymers may be selected for particular chemical or optical requirements. Toughened mineral lenses resist some scratches but have different impact and mass characteristics.
Hard coats, anti-fog coatings and surface films affect care. Abrasive wiping can remove a coating; concentrated cleaner can cause crazing. Follow the supplied cleaning method rather than using workshop solvent.

Prescription glasses and contact lenses
Ordinary spectacles lack the coverage and tested retention required for workshop hazards. Use compatible over-spectacles, a goggle designed to fit over them, or prescription safety eyewear. Check that temples do not break a respirator or hearing-protector seal.
Contact lenses do not provide protection. Chemical and dusty work needs the same assessed PPE and emergency plan whether contacts are worn or not.
Fogging is a safety defect, not an inconvenience
Temperature change, exertion, masks and poor ventilation create condensation. A worker who cannot see may lift the protector or misjudge a tool. Select compatible indirect ventilation or anti-fog treatment, improve extraction and manage work/rest conditions.
Do not drill ventilation holes or polish a lens with an unknown compound. Those modifications can invalidate protection and introduce distortion.
Grinding and rotating-tool work
Inspect the wheel or accessory, use its guard and stay within speed limits. Position screens to protect others and control sparks and fragments. Eye protection must cover the assessed impact risk; add suitable face protection when facial exposure remains.
Stand clear during run-up and never use a face shield as justification for a cracked wheel, missing guard or side-loading of an unsuitable disc.
Chemical splash and emergency response
Use the substance safety data to identify splash, vapour and compatibility requirements. A sealed goggle may be needed under a visor. Ensure eyewash provision is accessible before opening the container and never wear contaminated PPE into a clean area.
If exposure occurs, begin the specified irrigation immediately, remove contacts only when the response procedure permits, and obtain medical advice. Do not neutralise a chemical in the eye with another chemical.
Welding, cutting and bystander exposure
Choose the correct filter scale for process, current and fuel-gas work. Auto-darkening helmets need intact sensors, power source and a functioning light-state filter. Inspect cover lenses and test the function as instructed before striking an arc.
Use curtains and controlled areas to protect nearby people from arc radiation and sparks. A dark filter must not be used for general walking or grinding unless the helmet provides the separately required clear impact protection in that mode.
Electric-arc face protection
Arc-flash PPE is selected from an electrical risk assessment that considers incident energy, voltage, task and working distance. The visor, chin protection, helmet, balaclava and clothing may form one rated system.
Only competent persons should undertake the electrical work. De-energisation, isolation and verification take priority; a visor does not make live work acceptable.
Inspection, cleaning and storage
Before use
Check the lens in reflected light, flex points, arms, strap, vents, carrier and locking mechanism. Confirm markings remain legible and the protector has not been mixed with incompatible parts.
After use
Remove loose dust without rubbing it into the surface, wash and dry as instructed, and disinfect shared equipment with a compatible method. Store it in a clean case away from direct sun, heat and chemical vapour.
Replacement decisions
Replace after a significant impact even if damage looks minor, and reject any lens with cracks, deep scratches, haze, crazing, burned areas or permanent distortion. Elastic straps that no longer hold fit and visor pivots that drop unexpectedly are also failures.
Do not sand, heat-form or glue a protector. Repairs must be expressly supported by its manufacturer.

Current HSE guidance requires the right type of PPE for the hazard, with careful selection, maintenance and user training. Employers should assess risk, provide suitable controls and ensure PPE is used correctly; workers must use and report defects in the equipment provided.
