Automatic transmission fluid

Automatic transmission fluid acts as hydraulic working fluid, lubricant and coolant inside a conventional automatic gearbox. It transmits pressure from the pump through valves and solenoids, controls clutch and brake engagement, lubricates planetary gears and bearings, and carries heat to the transmission cooler. In the torque converter it also transfers engine torque through moving fluid.

Select by registration or VIN, exact transmission code, build date and the gearbox manufacturer's formal fluid approval. Do not choose by red colour or a broad “ATF” label. Viscosity, friction modifiers, oxidation stability, seal compatibility and low-temperature flow are calibrated for particular clutch materials and valve-body control. CVT fluid and dual-clutch fluid are not substitutes unless the exact transmission approval explicitly says otherwise.

Check the transmission label, current technical information and previous service record together. A replacement gearbox may not match the vehicle's original build data, and an unknown existing fill changes the mixing decision.

Establish the service method before opening the gearbox. Some units have a dipstick; others use a standpipe or level plug with the vehicle level, engine running and fluid within a narrow temperature window. Confirm the fill point opens before draining. The published dry capacity is not the refill quantity after an ordinary drain because fluid remains in the torque converter, cooler and hydraulic passages.

Dark colour or odour alone does not diagnose internal damage, but burnt fluid, metal, heavy friction material, water or coolant requires investigation. Fresh ATF cannot restore worn clutches, a damaged pump or sticking valve body. Delayed drive, slip, flare, shudder, harsh changes or overtemperature should be diagnosed with codes, pressure, adaptations and fluid level before selecting a drain, pan service or approved exchange.

Work with the vehicle securely supported and level, protect yourself from hot fluid and use clean dedicated filling equipment. Renew specified filters, pan seals, plugs and washers, then fill only with the approved product. Cycle selector positions and set final level by the exact temperature procedure. ATF is calibrated for hydraulic control and wet friction

A conventional automatic changes ratio by applying multi-plate clutches and brakes around planetary gearsets. Solenoids and valves meter fluid into clutch pistons with precise timing. The oil's viscosity and friction response therefore influence every shift.

The same fluid lubricates moving parts, cools the unit and operates the torque converter. One incorrect formulation can disturb several functions at once.

Viscosity modifiers

The fluid must flow at cold start yet maintain a hydraulic film when hot. Shear stability keeps its viscosity within the designed range over repeated cycles.

Friction modifiers

Wet clutch plates need a controlled relationship between static and dynamic friction. The formulation prevents stick-slip while allowing positive engagement.

Oxidation and wear control

Antioxidants slow heat-driven degradation, while anti-wear and corrosion inhibitors protect metals. Anti-foam agents preserve pump efficiency because aerated fluid is compressible.

Approval is more important than colour

Red dye is an identifier used by many products, not a performance standard. Fluids may darken in service, and some approved ATFs are other colours. Never infer interchangeability from appearance.

Use the exact manufacturer specification or an officially recognised supersession. A product claiming broad suitability without the required approval should be evaluated against authoritative technical data. “Low viscosity” is not a complete specification.

Conventional automatic versus CVT and DCT

Torque-converter automatics use planetary gears and hydraulic clutches. A CVT uses belt/chain and variable pulleys with different traction needs. A wet dual-clutch gearbox combines gear lubrication with clutch friction under another control strategy.

Containers can use similar language, but fluids are not interchangeable by transmission category alone. Some unusual units specify a product with an ATF name; use the exact approval rather than general assumptions.

Torque converter and lock-up clutch

The converter transfers torque hydrodynamically at low speed. At cruise, a lock-up clutch reduces slip. Its apply can be modulated, making friction characteristics particularly visible as shudder.

Shudder can come from degraded fluid, clutch wear, engine misfire, mounts or driveline issues. An additive that temporarily changes friction is not a mechanical diagnosis or approved repair unless the manufacturer specifies it.

Temperature and ageing

Heat accelerates oxidation and varnish formation. Towing, mountain driving, high ambient temperature, repeated urban shifts and converter slip increase load. A cooler restriction or cooling-system fault must be repaired.

Fluid temperature data should be observed during diagnosis. Repeated overtemperature cannot be solved by choosing a thicker or “racing” fluid outside approval. Record operating conditions and cooler inlet/outlet behaviour.

Service interval and operating conditions

Follow the transmission manufacturer's time, distance and severe-use schedule. A vehicle handbook may describe normal service while a gearbox supplier provides a separate interval. Record which authoritative requirement applies.

“Filled for life” does not mean fluid cannot degrade or leak. It may mean no scheduled change under defined service life and conditions. Diagnosis and repair still require correct ATF and level.

Why an indiscriminate flush is risky

A fluid exchange does not cause healthy friction material to fail, but it can expose pre-existing wear, disturb debris or use incompatible fluid and pressure when performed incorrectly. A transmission already slipping or full of fragments needs diagnosis, not a generic flush.

Use equipment and direction approved for the unit, never solvent or cleaning chemicals without explicit instruction. Inspect what drains rather than hiding evidence in a machine reservoir.

Safe service sequence

  1. Confirm gearbox code, approval, capacity ranges, filter, seals, torque and level method.
  2. Record codes, adaptations, temperature and existing shift symptoms before service.
  3. Verify the fill point can be opened before draining.
  4. Raise and support the vehicle level and protect against hot fluid and exhaust.
  5. Drain into a clean measured container and inspect fluid and deposits.
  6. Service pan/filter as specified, using lint-free cleaning and correct seals.
  7. Tighten plugs and pan in sequence and add the approved initial quantity.
  8. Start and circulate through selector positions while monitoring for leaks.
  9. Bring ATF into the exact level-check temperature window.
  10. Set final level, road-test, scan and inspect after a complete heat cycle.

Level setting

Dipstick systems have hot/cold scales and specific engine/selector conditions. Standpipe systems establish level by overflow only at a defined temperature with the pump running and the vehicle level.

ATF expands as it warms. Too little draws air and loses pressure; too much can foam and increase drag. Quantity drained is a useful reasonableness check but not the final level method.

Clean filling equipment

Use pumps, hoses and containers dedicated to the approved fluid. A small residue of gear oil, coolant or another ATF can contaminate a sensitive valve body. Keep caps closed and wipe container tops before opening.

Do not return unused ATF from a workshop jug to the original container. Store labelled and dry, observing shelf life. Used fluid belongs in an authorised oil-recycling stream.

Adaptations after service

Do not reset shift adaptations automatically. Learned values may reveal wear, and clearing them can cause harsh shifts until a defined relearn completes. Follow service information for the exact work performed.

If reset is required, meet fluid temperature, road and load conditions safely. An adaptation that reaches its limit indicates a fault, not a need to repeat the procedure indefinitely.
