Blower Motor

A blower motor drives the fan that moves air through the vehicle's heating, ventilation and air-conditioning housing. It draws air through the cabin filter and evaporator or heater matrix, then delivers it to face, footwell and windscreen outlets. Traditional motors use brushes and a resistor pack for stepped speeds; later systems often use a transistor controller or brushless motor for continuously variable airflow commanded by the climate-control module.

Match by VIN, build date, left- or right-hand drive, climate option and housing position. Compare motor diameter, fan-wheel size and direction, mounting flange, connector, current rating and whether the controller is separate or attached. A motor that bolts in can still rotate the wrong way or place the wheel at the wrong depth, reducing airflow and causing noise. Confirm included seals, screws and control module.

No airflow, one speed only, squealing, vibration or intermittent operation needs system diagnosis. Check the cabin filter, air intake, fuse, relay, supply and earth, speed resistor or electronic controller, climate command and fan wheel for debris. A seized or high-current motor can overheat a new controller; a blocked filter can reduce ventilation even when the fan sounds normal. Water ingress from scuttle drains frequently damages both motor and connectors.

Disconnect electrical power as specified before reaching into the fan housing. The wheel can start automatically with climate commands, remote preconditioning or residual controller logic. Keep fingers clear, support trim and airbags correctly and use eye protection against falling debris. On hybrid and electric vehicles, cabin preconditioning can operate while the powertrain appears off; follow the vehicle's service state.

Clean the intake and housing, correct leaks and replace a restricted filter before installing the exact motor. Transfer no balance clips from the old fan and do not oil sealed bearings unless explicitly permitted. Seat the seal, route wiring away from the wheel and tighten evenly. Test every speed, outlet and demist mode, listening for contact and checking connector heat and motor current. Reliable airflow is essential for comfort, screen clearing and safe visibility.

Centrifugal fan operation

The wheel throws air outward into a spiral housing

Air enters along the wheel axis, blades accelerate it radially and the scroll converts velocity into useful pressure. Debris or a broken blade unbalances the wheel. Incorrect axial depth changes the gap at the inlet ring and can make a good motor produce weak, turbulent airflow.

Balance weights are set for the individual wheel. Moving clips or trimming blades is not a repair; replace a damaged or distorted assembly.

Resistor speed control

In a stepped system, current passes through different resistance paths to create lower speeds. The resistor sits in the airstream because it produces heat. A thermal fuse can open when airflow is blocked or motor current is excessive.

Start with airflow restrictions

Inspect the cabin filter for blockage, collapse or incorrect orientation. Leaves can enter between filter and wheel, particularly if the cover or scuttle seal is missing. Check intake grilles and distribution outlets.

A filter removed for testing must not be left out permanently. It protects the evaporator and fan, and the housing may rely on its sealed fit for correct airflow.

Water ingress and drainage

Controller and resistor replacement

Inspect the mating connector before installing a new module. Heat can relax terminals and carbonise plastic; a fresh controller connected to a poor high-current joint will overheat again. Use the specified repair connector where needed.

Ensure the heat sink enters the airstream and its seal is seated. Do not operate it loose against trim, where exposed electronics and heat present risk.
