Diesel Additives

Diesel additives are formulated for a specific fuel-system or combustion task, such as maintaining injector cleanliness, improving low-temperature flow, raising lubricity, controlling stored-fuel microbes or supporting diesel particulate filter regeneration. They are not interchangeable, and no additive can repair a mechanically failed injector, pump, sensor, turbocharger, EGR valve or DPF.

Choose by the stated purpose, fuel type, vehicle and after-treatment compatibility, treatment ratio, tank volume and ambient conditions. Confirm suitability for modern common-rail injection, biodiesel content, DPF, SCR and catalytic systems where fitted. Check whether the product is a routine dose or a one-off concentrated treatment. Use only a product intended for road diesel and follow its measured dose; combining treatments can duplicate active ingredients or create an unknown concentration.

Diagnose the symptom before dosing. Hard starting, smoke, hesitation, poor economy or frequent regeneration can result from low fuel pressure, air ingress, water, a blocked filter, injector correction, boost leaks, glow faults, thermostat problems, sensors or short-trip use. Read fault codes and live data, inspect maintenance history and test fuel quality when contamination is suspected.

Additives marketed for cetane improvement may shorten ignition delay within their tested range, while cold-flow products modify wax-crystal behaviour only when mixed before fuel has gelled. Biocide treatment requires accurate diagnosis and safe handling; dead microbial material still has to be removed through filtration and tank cleaning. Petrol additives, engine oil, two-stroke oil, AdBlue and improvised solvents must never be poured into a diesel tank.

Measure with clean dedicated equipment, avoid skin and eye contact, and prevent spills into drains. Add at the instructed fuel level and mixing sequence, retain the batch and dose record, then assess results over a defined journey rather than redosing immediately. An additive changes fuel chemistry; it does not replace diagnosis

Road diesel already contains a controlled additive package from its producer. An aftermarket treatment introduces more chemistry for a narrower task. Benefit depends on the starting fuel, dose, engine design and operating conditions.

Use a treatment only when its claimed function matches evidence. A cleaner cannot restore eroded injector holes, and a cetane improver cannot correct low compression.

Smoke colour, starting time and acceleration feel are clues, not component verdicts. Scan all relevant controllers, preserve freeze-frame data and compare actual rail pressure, air mass, boost, temperatures and injector corrections with service information.

Check fuel-filter condition and drain water only by the approved procedure. If the vehicle entered limp mode or displays a DPF/SCR warning, follow that diagnostic path before adding anything.

Injector detergency

Injector tips operate in heat and combustion gases. Deposits can affect spray pattern and flow, while internal deposits can hinder small control valves. Suitable detergents aim to prevent or remove particular deposits without harming elastomers and fuel lubricity.

Correction values outside range may also reflect compression, wiring, return leakage or learned control. Confirm with leak-off, balance and electrical tests rather than repeatedly increasing cleaner concentration.

Cetane number and combustion

Cetane quality describes a diesel fuel's readiness to auto-ignite under defined conditions. A shorter delay can influence cold starting and combustion noise, but engine calibration and fuel specification set the intended range.

More improver is not indefinitely better. Observe the label dose and do not confuse cetane number with petrol octane; the combustion principles and scales differ.

Cold-weather operation

At low temperature, paraffin wax forms crystals that can block the filter. Seasonal diesel formulation is the first protection. A compatible cold-flow improver must be dispersed before the fuel reaches its cloud point; adding it to a gelled tank may not restore flow.

If waxing occurs, move the vehicle to an appropriate warm environment and follow filter/fuel guidance. Never heat a fuel system with a flame, hot-air gun or improvised electrical heater.

Water and microbial contamination

Water enters through condensation, poor storage or contaminated supply and settles beneath diesel. Microbes grow near the fuel-water interface, producing slime, acids and repeated filter blockage. A dark sample alone is not a laboratory diagnosis.

Take representative samples using safe dedicated equipment. A remediation plan can include water removal, tank cleaning, controlled biocide treatment, filter renewal and follow-up sampling. Killing organisms without removing debris can block the next filter.

DPF regeneration depends on engine condition

The controller needs adequate exhaust temperature, correct sensor data and suitable driving conditions. A cold-running thermostat, leaking injector, boost fault, EGR problem or repeated short trips can prevent completion or create soot faster than it burns.

Never initiate a forced regeneration over dry vegetation, near combustible material or with excessive oil dilution. Follow workshop precautions and monitor temperature and pressure.

Fuel-system lubricity

High-pressure pumps and injectors depend on fuel for lubrication. Road diesel must meet its specification, but contamination with petrol or water destroys that protection. An additive is not a safe response to a wrong-fuel incident.

Do not add two-stroke oil or engine oil. Their ash, viscosity and combustion characteristics are not a validated substitute and may damage after-treatment.

Handling and storage

Read the safety label and data sheet. Wear the stated gloves and eye protection, work away from ignition sources and ventilate. Fuel additives can be harmful by skin contact, inhalation or ingestion.

Keep the original sealed container upright, away from children, heat and food. Do not transfer it to a drinks bottle. Capture spills with compatible absorbent and use an authorised waste route.

Common mistakes

Do not pour additive into the AdBlue reservoir, engine-oil filler or an almost empty tank unless specifically directed. Do not assume a whole bottle is one dose. Package sizes may treat very different fuel quantities.

Avoid clearing fault codes to make a before-and-after comparison look successful. Confirm monitor completion and returning faults with live evidence.

When an additive should not be used

Do not dose a tank known to contain petrol, water or an unidentified chemical. Do not use treatment to mask metal particles, severe injector knock, uncontrolled smoke, low rail pressure, active leakage or an unsafe DPF pressure. Recover and diagnose the vehicle.

If a manufacturer specifies a workshop cleaning rig or component removal, a general tank dose is not an equivalent process.

Monitoring a treatment

Record starting, smoke, fuel trims or corrections, regeneration interval and fault status before use. Run a consistent route within road conditions and legal speeds, then compare data after sufficient treated fuel has passed through.

A subjective improvement does not prove the root cause is gone. Recheck filters, oil dilution and codes, especially after a DPF-related complaint.

UK emissions, MOT and road use

An additive does not make emissions-system removal or warning suppression lawful. DPF, catalyst, EGR and SCR equipment must remain present and functional where required. Excessive smoke, warning indications and tampering can affect MOT and road legality.

Use public roads normally; do not attempt an aggressive “Italian tune-up” that exceeds limits or ignores a serious warning. A safe controlled diagnostic journey is different from forcing a damaged system.
