Rear glass creates a specialised wiping problem
Airflow over a hatch or tailgate forms a low-pressure wake that deposits fine spray and dirt on the window. Unlike a windscreen, the rear glass may have tight curvature, a near-vertical angle and little direct airflow to help press the blade down.
The blade, arm spring, pivot and washer therefore work as one system. Correct length alone does not guarantee that the rubber follows the glass or that the connector remains secure through tailgate movement.

Why rear blades are vehicle-specific
Connector geometry
Rear arms use pins, side clips, push buttons, bayonet ends and moulded sockets that differ from familiar front hook arms. A connector must lock positively and align the rubber at the designed angle.
Glass curvature
A short window can still curve sharply near its edges. The carrier's pre-load and hinge spacing determine whether the lip stays in contact across the arc.

How the wiping edge works
The rubber lip does not scrape water like a rigid squeegee. It flips direction at each reversal and maintains a controlled contact angle as the arm moves. The microscopic edge must remain smooth and flexible.
Ultraviolet light, ozone, frost and road chemicals harden the material. Fine grit cuts the edge, while wax and silicone leave a film that causes judder. Once the lip is split, permanently set or rounded, cleaning cannot restore its geometry.
Arm pressure and pivot condition
A spring in the arm supplies contact force. Corrosion at the hinge can prevent the arm following the glass, and a tired spring reduces pressure. Too much force also increases motor load and friction, so bending the arm is not a controlled repair.
The spindle passes through the tailgate and is exposed to water. Corrosion can make it stiff, slowing the blade or overloading gears. Washer-system interaction

The wiper acts on the outside, but a bare arm striking the pane can crack glass or damage edge bonding. Avoid pouring boiling water onto frozen glass; thermal shock can cause breakage.
Winter use and freezing
Free the blade from ice before operating the switch. A stalled motor can overheat, strip gears or blow a fuse. Use a vehicle-safe de-icer and allow the demister to warm the pane gradually. Lift the blade only if the arm design permits it and wind cannot snap it back.

Wash the glass with automotive glass cleaner that leaves no waxy residue, then wipe the rubber with damp clean cloth until heavy dirt is removed. Solvents, neat screenwash concentrate and household polish can attack rubber or leave smear-inducing films.
Inspect during regular washing and before long journeys. There is no single calendar life because exposure and use vary, but splitting, noise, hardening and poor clearing are direct replacement criteria.
