Popular Models and Vehicle Options for Wing Mirror Cover
The mirror cover is shaped around a compact safety system
A modern door mirror can contain adjustment motors, heated glass, folding gears, direction indicator, camera, blind-spot warning lamp, temperature sensor, aerial and puddle light. The outer cap protects these parts while managing airflow and appearance.
Its tabs and edges are precisely located. A poorly fitting cover can whistle, detach, leak water or obstruct a camera and lamp even when its painted surface looks correct.
Cover constructions
| Cover type | Construction | Selection point |
|---|---|---|
| Clip-on upper cap | Painted shell clips to black lower housing. | Internal hook pattern and seam profile. |
| Full outer shell | Large piece surrounds glass and lower trim. | Mirror carrier and glass aperture. |
| Indicator-cut-out cap | Formed opening follows repeater lamp. | Lamp shape and production revision. |
| Camera-equipped cover | Precision aperture or bracket for surround camera. | Camera field, seal and calibration. |
| Primed replacement | Surface prepared for refinishing. | Primer quality and paint-system compatibility. |
| Textured self-colour | Colour and grain moulded into plastic. | Texture and ultraviolet stability. |
| Decorative overlay | Thin accessory attaches over existing cap. | Not a replacement for broken structural cover. |
Left and right identification
Use the seated driver's viewpoint
Automotive catalogues normally define sides from a person seated in the vehicle facing forward. UK terms such as near side and off side can be misunderstood, especially for imported left-hand-drive vehicles. Use the explicit left/right position and VIN.
Mirror caps are handed because airflow, indicator angle and inner hooks are asymmetric. Rotating an opposite-side part cannot make its clips align.
Exact fitment checks
| Check | Possible variation | Risk if wrong |
|---|---|---|
| Model/body style | Hatchback, estate, saloon and commercial door. | Mirror housing and cap size differ. |
| Production date | Pre-facelift/facelift styling and tabs. | Outer shape can look close but not latch. |
| Door side | Left/right and drive-side equipment. | Seams, airflow and apertures are reversed. |
| Indicator | No repeater, bulb/LED shape and lens length. | Cap obstructs or leaves a gap around lamp. |
| Camera/sensor | Surround view, antenna or temperature probe. | Field of view or sensor exposure changes. |
| Folding system | Manual, power fold or memory mirror. | Lower carrier and clearances may differ. |
| Finish | Primed, painted, textured or plated. | Unexpected refinishing and appearance mismatch. |
Plastic materials and clip behaviour
Mirror caps often use ABS, polycarbonate blends or other injection-moulded thermoplastics. Impact and ultraviolet exposure make thin hooks brittle. Cold removal increases breakage risk, but excessive heat warps the shell and damages paint.
Clips are designed to flex at specific points. Use the service diagram and release tool rather than prying at the visible seam. A tab broken from the structural carrier may require carrier or complete mirror replacement, not a new cap.
Assess impact damage
| Finding | Likely damaged area | Repair scope |
|---|---|---|
| Cap scuffed, all gaps even | Cosmetic outer surface. | Refinish or replace cap after inspection. |
| Cap will not clip at one corner | Broken cap tab or carrier socket. | Identify which mating part failed. |
| Mirror wobbles at base | Door mount or folding pivot. | Cap replacement alone is insufficient. |
| Glass loose/cracked | Backing plate, actuator or glass. | Repair reflective assembly before road use. |
| Indicator gap or moisture | Lamp tab, seal or cover profile. | Renew damaged lamp/cover and sealing. |
| Camera view changed | Aperture, bracket or mirror position. | Inspect mount and calibrate where required. |
| Mirror does not fold | Gears, motor, wiring or obstruction. | Diagnose folding mechanism. |
Mirror glass removal boundaries
Some covers cannot be released until glass is unclipped from the adjustment motor. Glass can crack suddenly, and heated/memory connections are delicate. Tilt to the specified position and use the defined release points.
Wear eye and hand protection, support the glass and disconnect terminals by their connectors rather than wires. Electrochromic glass may contain fluid and additional wiring. Replace damaged retaining rings or backing plates.
Indicators, cameras and sensors
A repeater can be retained by cap clips or separate screws. Do not let it hang from wiring. Inspect the lens seal and connector before reassembly; a cap gap allows water and wind noise.
Surround-view cameras depend on exact position and angle. A non-camera cap drilled by hand does not reproduce the engineered aperture or bracket. Removal or impact may trigger calibration according to the vehicle procedure.
Safe cover removal
- Confirm exact replacement, side, options, finish and official release sequence.
- Park securely, fold the mirror only by its normal control and switch ignition off.
- Protect door paint, window and mirror glass with clean non-abrasive coverings.
- Remove glass, indicator or lower trim only where the procedure requires access.
- Identify each cap tab and release it with a suitable plastic trim tool.
- Support the cap as the final clip releases so it cannot scratch the door.
- Inspect carrier sockets, lamp mounts, wiring, seals and drain paths.
- Transfer only specified clips, foam pads or seals to the new cover.
- Test-fit a primed cap before paint so fit problems are not discovered afterwards.
- Engage tabs in sequence with even hand pressure, then test all mirror functions.
Primed cover preparation
A primed surface may be transport primer rather than a complete paint-ready coating. Check the supplier's technical information. Degrease with a plastic-compatible cleaner and avoid silicone dressings that cause fisheyes.
Repair mould lines only within the paint system. Use the specified abrasive grade, adhesion promoter for exposed plastic, compatible primer surfacer, basecoat and clearcoat. Excess film around clip edges can crack during fitting.
Colour matching
The vehicle paint code identifies a formula family, but age, ultraviolet exposure, previous refinishing, application method and variant shades affect the match. Compare spray-out cards under daylight and workshop lighting.
Metallic orientation changes with gun distance and pressure. A small separate cap can appear different from the door due to viewing angle. Professional refinishing may be preferable for pearl or tri-coat colours.
Textured and plated finishes
Textured black plastic should not be sanded and polished like gloss paint. Clean with approved products and avoid greasy dressings near paint operations. Deep scratches usually require replacement or a dedicated texture-repair system.
Chrome-look plating can peel after impact. Abrasive polish removes thin coating and exposes base plastic. Replacement is generally more reliable than spot painting a plated surface unless a specialist process is used.
Water, wind noise and drainage
The cover is not always fully watertight; internal drains and seals manage rain. Blocking gaps with general silicone can trap water or obstruct future service. Restore foam and gaskets in their designed positions.
Whistling after replacement suggests an unseated edge, missing foam or incorrect cap. Compare panel gaps with the opposite mirror and inspect at safe stationary airflow conditions rather than placing hands outside while driving.
Common mistakes
- Ordering the wrong side through near-side/off-side confusion.
- Choosing by exterior shape without checking internal tabs.
- Buying a non-camera cap and drilling an aperture.
- Forcing the cap off without releasing glass-side clips.
- Levering against heated or electrochromic mirror glass.
- Painting before test-fitting the clips and indicator.
- Applying too much paint around locking tabs.
- Using adhesive to hide a broken structural carrier.
Final checks, safety and MOT
| Check | Correct result | If abnormal |
|---|---|---|
| Cover retention | Every seam even with no movement. | Remove and inspect clips; do not add exposed screws. |
| Mirror glass | Secure, clear and full adjustment range. | Repair backing/actuator before driving. |
| Power fold | Moves freely without cap contact. | Stop operation and check fit. |
| Indicator | Correct colour, visibility and no gap. | Refit lamp and cover or replace broken mounts. |
| Camera/blind-spot | No warnings and correct view/indicator. | Inspect mount and calibrate as specified. |
| Sharp edges | None exposed to pedestrians or occupants. | Repair immediately. |
Mirrors, indicators, security and field of view can be relevant to UK MOT inspection. A cosmetic cover itself is not the reflective surface, but an insecure or sharp assembly and any obstruction of required equipment must be corrected.
Wing mirror cover FAQs
Q: Are left and right mirror covers interchangeable?
A: No. Their external shape, tabs, apertures and airflow geometry are handed.
Q: Does a primed cover arrive painted?
A: No. It normally requires preparation, colour and clearcoat unless stated otherwise.
Q: Can I choose by the vehicle model alone?
A: No. Body style, build date, facelift and mirror options also matter.
Q: Must the mirror glass be removed?
A: On some designs yes, because cover clips are accessible only from inside.
Q: Can a cover be fitted over a broken carrier?
A: Not reliably. Repair the structural carrier or complete mirror first.
Q: Can I drill a camera hole into a plain cover?
A: No. Use the exact camera-equipped cover and engineered mounting.
Q: Why does the new cover whistle?
A: A tab, seam, foam pad or part version may be wrong or unseated.
Q: Can the cap affect power folding?
A: Yes. Misfit edges or excess paint can contact moving sections.
Q: Should clips be glued?
A: Use the designed clips and replace broken mating parts rather than relying on adhesive.
Q: How is paint colour matched?
A: Use the code plus variant and spray-out comparison, accounting for ageing and application.
Q: Can a chrome-look cover be polished deeply?
A: No. Abrasion can remove the thin decorative coating.
Q: Can mirror-cover damage affect the MOT?
A: It can if the mirror is insecure, sharp or obstructs required lighting or visibility equipment.
Q: When should the mirror be repaired urgently?
A: Repair before driving if loose, sharp, unable to provide required view or interfering with indicator/camera operation.
