Eye, face and hearing protection
Impact, dust and liquid hazards
Safety spectacles can protect against specified low-energy impact but usually leave gaps around the eyes. Goggles provide greater enclosure for dust or splash, while a face shield covers more of the face. A shield may need to be worn over suitable eye protection because material can pass around it. Welding and intense optical radiation require correctly rated specialist protection.
Lens condition and fit
Scratched, crazed or chemically attacked lenses reduce vision and may lose strength. Side arms, straps and seals should hold the protector in its intended position without painful pressure. Prescription needs must be met with approved over-spectacles or prescription safety eyewear rather than ordinary glasses alone.
Controlling noise exposure
Earplugs and earmuffs must provide suitable attenuation across the relevant frequencies. Excessive attenuation can also obstruct communication and warning signals. Respiratory protection and ventilation
Respiratory protective equipment is selected by contaminant, concentration, work rate and environment. Particle filters do not automatically protect against gases or vapours. Organic-vapour filters do not cover every gas, and filtering devices must never be used in oxygen-deficient or immediately dangerous atmospheres.
Tight-fitting masks depend on a clean seal to the face. Facial hair, eyewear, incorrect size or damaged valves can cause leakage. Workplace use may require face-fit testing, records and a managed programme. Filters have capacity limits and replacement rules; smell is not a safe change indicator.
Local exhaust ventilation, wet methods and source extraction generally provide more reliable control than allowing contamination into the breathing zone. Never use compressed air to blow brake or clutch dust from components. Materials suspected of containing asbestos require specialist assessment and controls.
Roadside visibility and emergency equipment
A breakdown scene changes rapidly with traffic speed, bends, darkness and weather. If the vehicle can reach a safe refuge, move it there. Switch on hazard warning lamps where appropriate, stop the engine and assess the safest exit. Occupants should not remain exposed between the vehicle and moving traffic or stand where a secondary collision could reach them.
High-visibility clothing improves detection but cannot stop a vehicle. A warning triangle should not be placed on a motorway, and walking into traffic to deploy any warning device may be more dangerous than remaining in a protected location. Emergency lights must have lawful colour and use, secure mounting and adequate charge.
Glass hammers, belt cutters and torches need a reachable, restrained location rather than loose storage. Batteries should be checked and protected from leakage. Instructions must be understood before an emergency, when visibility, time and fine motor control may be limited.

Absorbent capacity is quoted under defined test conditions and may exceed practical pickup. Compatibility matters more than colour coding alone. Granules can create slip or dust risks, while contaminated pads may self-heat or react if incompatible wastes are mixed.
Fire response equipment
Prevent fire through correct fuel handling, battery isolation, ventilation, housekeeping and control of ignition sources. Extinguishers are for a small incipient fire only when the user is trained, has the right type and retains a clear escape route. Raise the alarm and call the emergency services first where required.
Water, foam, powder, carbon dioxide and wet-chemical equipment have different applications and hazards. Applying the wrong agent can spread burning liquid, conduct electricity or produce a violent reaction. Vehicle and workplace extinguishers need secure mounting, inspection and servicing to the applicable regime; a pressure gauge alone does not prove full serviceability.
