Correct tip geometry protects the fastener and the component
A screwdriver converts hand force into torque at a small recess. Contact should be broad and even. When the profile or size is wrong, load concentrates at corners, causing cam-out, burrs and stripped heads.
Automotive fasteners often sit in plastic, aluminium or electrical terminals where damage is more costly than the screw. Selection and pressure matter as much as handle strength.

Phillips and Pozidriv
Phillips geometry
The tapered flanks can encourage the driver to rise out as torque increases. Correct axial force and size reduce cam-out. Sizes such as PH1, PH2 and PH3 are distinct.
Pozidriv geometry
Additional ribs and more parallel flanks improve torque transfer. A PZ driver in a PH recess contacts poorly, and a PH driver in PZ often damages the corners.
Visual identification
The extra shallow marks between the main cross arms commonly identify Pozidriv. Clean the head before deciding; dirt and paint can hide them.
Slotted-driver fit
The blade should fill the slot width and depth without bottoming on a curved recess. Too narrow a blade twists and marks the screw; too thick will not seat; too wide damages surrounding material.
Cabinet tips have parallel blade width for recessed access, while flared keystone tips can be stronger for general screws. Do not grind an insulated driver to fit because this removes protection and changes heat treatment.
Torx and related profiles
Torx lobes carry torque on broad surfaces with low cam-out. A slightly small bit can feel engaged until high load rounds both parts. Tap the correct bit fully into a dirty non-live recess only where component safety permits.
External Torx uses a socket around a male star and is not a screwdriver profile. Torx Plus, five-lobe and centre-pin security versions need exact matching tools. Forcing a standard bit can leave a fastener impossible to remove.

Handle, shaft and tang construction
Handles combine grip diameter, texture and chemical resistance. A larger handle raises available torque, which is not always desirable on trim and terminals. Oil or coolant makes even a textured grip unsafe.
A standard tang ends inside the handle. Through-tang tools continue to a metal striking cap and can tolerate controlled hammer blows when rated. Metal caps create an electrical path and must be kept away from live equipment.
VDE insulated tools
VDE-rated screwdrivers are individually tested and marked for a maximum working voltage under relevant standards. Their insulation includes controlled shaft coverage and finger guards. Inspect for cuts, burns, contamination and expired inspection requirements.
Insulated tools are a final protective measure, not a reason to work live. Isolate, lock out, identify the correct circuit and prove dead with an approved tester. Hybrid/EV traction systems need specialist training, arc and shock controls beyond a screwdriver.
Torque screwdrivers
Electrical terminals, sensor covers and plastic housings can specify low torque. A torque screwdriver signals or slips at a set value, improving repeatability. Select a tool whose working range places the value comfortably inside it.
Calibration, correct hand position and steady application matter. Do not use a click-type torque tool to loosen screws unless rated. Return adjustable tools to their storage setting according to instructions.

- Identify the exact recess, size, access and torque requirement.
- Clean the head and choose a driver that seats with no rocking.
- Confirm the component is supported and electrical systems are safely isolated.
- Align the shaft with the screw axis and keep the wrist neutral.

Removing damaged or seized screws
First remove dirt, choose the exact new bit and apply penetrating product only where compatible. Controlled heat can damage plastic, paint, seals and wiring, so use it only under an approved procedure.
Manual impact drivers convert a hammer blow into rotation and axial force, but require a supported robust component. They are unsuitable near airbags, glass, thin housings and sensitive bearings. If the recess is already stripped, use a planned extractor or drill method that contains swarf.
Bit holders and interchangeable systems
A quality holder grips standard bits without excessive play. Magnetic retention helps position screws but can attract metal swarf and affect magnetically sensitive work. Locking quick-release holders need full engagement.
Bits marked for impact use have different toughness from hard hand bits. Use impact-rated holders and bits with powered impact drivers. A screwdriver-style bit set does not mean every bit is safe for impact.
Impact-driver boundaries
Powered impact tools deliver repeated torsional blows and can destroy small automotive fasteners before the operator reacts. Use only where component procedures permit and start threads manually.
Final torque on precision fasteners should be applied with the specified tool. Impact drivers can damage electronic-module screws, hose clamps and trim even at low settings.
