Build an inventory before buying capacity

Group tools by function, frequency and size. Measure the longest items, tallest sockets and largest battery tools. Include chargers, cases, calibration blocks and protective caps. Weigh dense groups such as sockets, pullers and striking tools rather than estimating by eye.

Allow a sensible margin for access and growth, but not so much empty drawer area that tools slide. Internal dimensions matter; outer width includes frame, handles and latches.

Opening a drawer moves the load beyond the cabinet frame

A tall cabinet can tip when a loaded drawer shifts mass outside the caster footprint. Open only one drawer unless the system explicitly manages multiple drawers. Close and latch drawers before movement. Push using the designed handle; pulling a cabinet makes it harder to control and places the operator in its path.

Do not roll loaded cabinets over steep slopes, broken floors, cables or unbridged thresholds. A wheel stopping suddenly can overturn the cabinet. Obtain help or unload it for a difficult move.

Casters, brakes and floor conditions

Weather and water resistance

A gasketed lid helps only when the seal is clean, undamaged and latched evenly. An ingress-protection claim applies to a defined test and product condition; it does not promise survival when submerged, drilled for accessories or left with a cable across the seal.

Water trapped inside a sealed case can be worse than ventilation. Dry wet tools and the enclosure separately before closing.

Rust prevention and tool condition

Remove coolant, brake fluid, salt and fingerprints from vulnerable steel. Light protective products may be appropriate for hand tools, but keep them away from insulated gripping surfaces, friction tools and instruments where contamination affects use.

Desiccant can help in a closed case if monitored and regenerated, but it cannot compensate for putting damp tools away.

Security without false confidence

Locks control casual access; thin panels and portable cases can still be attacked or removed. Record serial numbers and keep high-value items out of public view. A key left in a mobile cabinet can catch clothing or snap in the lock.

Security chains and anchors must attach to designed points without creating a trip hazard or compromising fire escape.

Storing hazardous workshop items

Do not use a general tool cabinet as a substitute for an approved flammable-liquid cabinet, battery charging station, gas-cylinder restraint or oily-waste bin. Separate sharp blades and hot tools. Protect terminals on loose batteries so metal tools cannot bridge them.
