Duke, RC, SMC R and Adventure are motorcycle families with handlebars, motorcycle frames, chain or model-specific final drive, forks, swingarms and motorcycle ABS. X-Bow uses a car-style four-wheel chassis, steering, braking, suspension and body architecture. No wheel, hub, brake, engine or service procedure should cross that boundary because the badge is shared. Within motorcycles, a number such as 390, 690, 790, 890 or another capacity family is not enough. Duke, RC, Adventure and SMC R applications can use different frames, suspension travel, brakes, wheels, gearing, bodywork and software even around a related engine. Confirm original part number, casting, connector and left/right position. Use the official owner or repair manual for the exact model year whenever setting axle, caliper, sprocket, handlebar, suspension or engine fastener torque; a generic online value can strip alloy threads or leave a safety joint loose.

Motorcycle chain slack, alignment and wear must be checked by the specified method and loading state. An over-tight chain can damage output-shaft, wheel and suspension bearings; excessive slack can derail or strike components. Tyres need approved dimensions, construction, load/speed rating and cold pressures for road or stated track use. Brake disc thickness, pad material, ABS rings and wheel spacers are model-specific. After wheel work, confirm free rotation, brake pressure, sensor clearance and every fastener before riding.

Use the exact engine-oil grade and motorcycle performance specification because wet-clutch and catalytic requirements matter. Coolant, brake/clutch fluid, fork oil and X-Bow car fluids remain separate choices. Stop for oil-pressure, brake, tyre, steering, chain or high-temperature faults. Track settings, exhausts, lighting removals and number-plate arrangements may not be road legal. A UK MOT pass does not validate race preparation, suspension setup, torque history or X-Bow structural repair.

Split motorcycle and X-Bow catalogues at the first step

A KTM motorcycle and an X-Bow are different vehicle categories. Duke, RC, SMC R and Adventure models use motorcycle controls, frames, suspension and braking. X-Bow is a four-wheel sports car with a carbon-based passenger cell on relevant versions, car hubs, double-track suspension and automotive systems. A brand search that merges them is technically unsafe.

For a motorcycle, record VIN/frame number, model year, exact model and suffix, market, engine number/code and option equipment. For X-Bow, record full VIN, variant, production date, powertrain and chassis specification. Read labels and part numbers on the installed assembly. Model-year changes can affect electronics, ABS, wheels and engine components even where body colour and name remain similar.

Model number does not finish identification

A related engine family can appear in several motorcycles while intake, exhaust, cooling, gearing, wiring and ECU software differ. Adventure wheel diameter and suspension travel are not RC specifications. SMC R road wheels/brakes differ from an enduro-oriented application. Use KTM’s official model-year manual and parts information rather than transferring a setting from another suffix.

Inspect a motorcycle as a load path

Loads travel from front tyre through wheel bearings, axle, fork, steering head and frame, and from rear tyre through hub, sprocket carrier, swingarm and shock. Braking loads pass through calipers, discs and mounts. Inspect the path after a kerb strike, crash, wheelie impact or track excursion. Cracks, bent wheels, displaced forks or steering tight spots require proper measurement, not visual reassurance.

Fork legs need correct alignment through yokes and axle clamps. Tightening in the wrong sequence can bind suspension. Steering-head bearings should move smoothly without play; overtightening to remove a knock causes weave and poor self-centring. Rear ride height, sag and damping adjustments interact, and settings must remain within the manual’s range.

Set chain condition from the exact model method

Chain slack changes as the suspension moves because countershaft, swingarm pivot and rear axle do not remain collinear. The manual specifies measuring position, point on the lower run and vehicle load. Check several wheel positions for tight spots. Clean and lubricate with products suitable for the chain and avoid contaminating tyre or rear brake.

Assess elongation over the specified number of links, sprocket tooth profile, stiff links and adjuster travel. Replace chain and sprockets as a matched set where required. Align from reliable swingarm marks or measurement and keep adjusters equal. Rear axle torque, adjuster locknuts and cotter/retention method come from that model’s manual.

Chain faults can become immediate hazards

A cracked link, missing clip, seized section, hooked teeth or severe slack rules out riding. A broken chain can lock the rear wheel or damage the crankcase. Over-tight adjustment loads the countershaft seal/bearing and suspension. Recheck after wheel removal and initial bedding according to the official schedule.

Match tyres, brakes and ABS as one system

Use approved motorcycle tyre dimensions, construction, speed/load capability and tube/tubeless arrangement. Mixing profiles can alter steering. Set cold pressure from official model data, considering passenger/luggage or defined track instructions. A track pressure used on warm tyres is not a safe road setting. Replace a tyre with exposed cords, sidewall damage, severe flat spots or embedded structural injury.

Brake pads, disc diameter/thickness and caliper differ across Duke, RC, SMC R and Adventure variants. Measure remaining disc thickness and check run-out, cracking and carrier movement. Use specified brake fluid and clean tools. Pump pressure after pad/wheel work before moving the motorcycle.

ABS depends on correct sensor, tone ring, wheel size and gap. A bent ring or wrong spacer can create faults or contact. Riding modes and cornering functions, where fitted, rely on sensors and software but cannot overcome insufficient grip. Save codes before clearing and do not bypass ABS for road use unless the official mode and law permit the intended condition.

Use official model data for every torque value

Fastener torque depends on diameter, pitch, grade, material, thread condition, locking compound and whether the value is dry or lubricated. An aluminium engine case, hollow axle and brake banjo cannot use a generic chart safely. Obtain the value and tightening sequence from the manual for the exact model year.

Clean and inspect threads. Replace stretch, locking or damaged fasteners where specified. Use a calibrated torque wrench in its working range and hold the mating nut when instructed. Paint marks can show movement but do not establish initial torque. After safety-critical work, use a second-person check where practical.

Choose motorcycle fluids by clutch and system design

Four-stroke motorcycle oil needs the viscosity and performance specification stated for the engine. Many KTM motorcycles share engine oil with a wet clutch and gearbox, so friction behaviour matters. X-Bow uses an automotive engine/transmission system and must not be filled from motorcycle oil assumptions. Check level using the manual’s temperature, upright/stand and settling process.

Brake fluid, hydraulic clutch fluid where fitted, coolant and fork oil are separate. Some clutch systems may specify a fluid different from brake fluid; mixing can damage seals. Fork oil grade and air gap affect damping and must match fork model. Coolant should meet the stated chemistry and concentration, not a colour.

Respond to faults before riding or track use

Do not ride with an oil-pressure warning, brake pressure loss, damaged tyre, loose axle, cracked chain, steering bind or coolant loss. Stop the engine and move the machine safely without exposing yourself to traffic. A red warning or abnormal mechanical noise is not made safer by a short remaining journey.

For amber engine, ABS or suspension messages, save diagnostic data and system voltage. Modern motorcycles can be affected by low battery voltage or wheel-speed faults. Confirm connectors, sensor gaps and software/recall status for the exact VIN and model year before replacing modules.

Track use increases heat and inspection frequency but does not create a universal service interval. Record laps/time, temperatures and settings, then follow official race/track guidance where published. Road use after track preparation requires restoring legal equipment, road pressures and appropriate setup.

Keep modifications and UK road use compatible

Exhaust, intake or ECU changes can affect fuelling, noise, catalyst operation and insurance. Levers, rearsets and handlebars must retain clearance and brake-light operation. Tail tidies and lighting need compliant position, colour, visibility and number-plate arrangement. Suspension lowering or wheel changes can disturb ABS and geometry.

Motorcycle MOT inspection can cover tyres, wheels, steering, suspension, brakes, lamps, registration plate, structure, exhaust and relevant equipment according to age. X-Bow follows car-category requirements. A pass does not approve track-only noise, prove torque values or validate composite repair.

Maintain roadworthiness between tests and disclose material modifications. Only use competition parts on public roads where they meet applicable construction, lighting, emissions and noise requirements.
