Never work beneath a load supported only by a jack, cylinder or hoist chain without the specified secondary support.

Plan the work area with clear escape space, adequate lighting and separation from vehicle traffic. Wear task-appropriate PPE and control ignition, fumes, batteries, compressed air and hot fluids. Only trained people should operate lifts, presses, tyre equipment, refrigerant stations or high-voltage service tools. Do not bypass interlocks, exceed guards or improvise extensions and packing.

Follow the manufacturer's operating, inspection and maintenance schedule, plus workplace examination duties. Position loads at defined points, raise or apply force slowly and stop if anything shifts, tilts or sounds abnormal. Release stored pressure and isolate energy before maintenance. Keep serial, inspection and repair records, use competent servicing and replace damaged safety labels. After work, lower equipment safely, clean spills and store accessories so the next user can verify a complete serviceable setup.

Capacity and load centre

Rated capacity assumes defined loading. A long transmission or engine positioned off-centre creates an overturning moment even below the mass limit. Extended arms and adaptors can reduce effective capacity.

Know the component mass and centre of gravity. Keep the load within the equipment diagram and use only approved fixtures.

Floor and installation

The equipment rating does not compensate for weak foundations

Lifts, presses and fixed machines can require a specified concrete thickness, strength, flatness and anchor layout. Portable stands need a hard level surface, not soft ground, blocks or a sloping drive.

Have permanent installations assessed and commissioned by competent people. Keep exclusion zones and emergency controls accessible.

Mechanical locks and secondary support

Hydraulic cylinders move loads but seals, hoses and valves can fail. Vehicle lifts use mechanical locks; jacks require rated stands; an engine crane may need a stable stand before prolonged work.

Lower onto the intended lock or support and prove stability with no person underneath. Never depend on pressure alone.

Hydraulic systems

Correct fluid transmits force and lubricates components. Air, contamination or wrong viscosity causes erratic motion. A pinhole leak can inject fluid through skin and requires emergency medical attention.

Never search for a high-pressure leak with a hand. Depressurise and use the manufacturer's inspection method.

Compressed air

Regulate pressure to the equipment limit, secure couplings and inspect hoses for abrasion and blisters. Fit whip restraints where required. Isolate and vent before disconnecting or clearing a jam.

Compressed air is not for cleaning skin or clothing. Blowing dust can create respiratory and eye hazards.

Electrical supply and batteries

Match voltage, phase, current and protective device. Inspect plugs, earth continuity, insulation and strain relief. Extension leads must be rated, fully deployed where heat could build and kept away from wet routes.

Battery chargers and boosters need correct chemistry, polarity and vehicle-electronics mode. Ventilate charging areas and keep sparks away from hydrogen.

Selecting equipment

Define the task frequency, heaviest load, size range, travel, accuracy and available services. Consider maintenance support, calibration, spare safety parts and storage. A compact machine that cannot position the work safely is not suitable.

Review manuals before installation so anchoring, ventilation, drainage and operator space are designed in.

Pre-use checks

Read the current instruction, verify inspection status and walk around the equipment. Check structure, fasteners, locks, hoses, cables, controls, emergency stop and accessories. Clear the operating path.

Run an unloaded function check where specified. Stop for jerky movement, unusual noise, drift or a warning.

Vehicle lifting

Identify manufacturer lift points and vehicle mass distribution, including battery packs and carried load. Position pads without crushing sills, pipes or underbody batteries. Close doors and check overhead clearance.

Raise a short distance, verify contact and balance, then continue. Engage locks and lower onto them before anyone enters the danger zone.

Press work

Align ram, tooling and part on the same force axis. Support close to the work with rated press plates, not brittle improvised blocks. Fit a guard because bearings, clips and tools can eject at speed.

Know the expected force. If pressure rises abnormally without movement, stop and reassess orientation, retention and corrosion.

Engine and transmission supports

Use application-correct mounting points and bolts of proper engagement. Set adjustable arms before transferring weight and secure rotating heads. Keep legs clear of hoist wheels during transfer.

Drain or cap fluids and control the high centre of gravity. Do not climb on a stand or exceed its angle limits.

Fluid equipment

Check container compatibility, temperature rating and remaining capacity before draining. Identify oils, coolants, fuels, brake fluid and refrigerants separately. Bond or earth equipment where flammable-fluid procedures require it.

Never mix waste streams casually or use an unlabelled container. Close valves and caps before movement.

Parts washers and extraction

Use only the approved cleaning fluid, ventilation and PPE. Aqueous and solvent machines have different fire, skin and waste controls. Keep lids and fusible links functional where fitted.

Extraction equipment needs the correct filter class for dust or fume. A domestic vacuum can ignite combustible vapour or spread hazardous particulate.

Inspection, examination and records

Daily or pre-use inspection does not replace scheduled maintenance or statutory thorough examination where applicable. Intervals depend on equipment, use, environment and UK work-equipment/lifting requirements.

Keep identifiable records of examination, defects, repair and calibration. Only competent people should release safety-critical equipment back to service.

Calibration

Pressure gauges, tyre machines, emissions analysers, torque devices and refrigerant stations can require calibration or verification. A machine that moves correctly can still report an unsafe value.

Protect calibration seals and schedule. Remove overdue equipment from measurement use according to the quality system.

Isolation and maintenance

Disconnect electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic and stored mechanical energy through a lock-off procedure. Block raised components with intended service supports. Verify zero energy before entering a guarded area.

Use specified replacement hoses, seals, pins and guards. Welding or drilling a rated structure needs written manufacturer or engineering authority.
