MER: understand the range before choosing
MER is a vehicle-care brand built around its Auto Shine Technologie range. The AutoMotoPart page contains only two formulas in two sizes: High Shine Car Shampoo for washing and Ultimate Shine Polish for paint correction and preparation. The 500ml and 1-litre versions change quantity, not the evidenced role of each product.
AutoMotoPart currently lists 4 MER items. The largest MER groups are 4 valeting entries. MER totals can change, so a category count is orientation rather than proof that a particular reference suits a vehicle, workplace or job. The exact MER listing, its current technical information and the item in front of you must agree.
What the MER page actually covers
| Product group in this range | Current entries | Selection focus |
|---|---|---|
| Valeting | 4 | Choose 500ml High Shine Shampoo for lower-frequency washing where a smaller bottle will be used within storage guidance. |
Two product names account for all four listings. Each has one 500ml and one 1-litre pack, so there is no extra formula or hidden grade in the range. Shampoo appears in the car-shampoo category and polish in the polish category. Pack volume does not change application sequence or finish compatibility.
Build a reliable shortlist
Inspect the vehicle in daylight and establish whether the job is contamination removal, gloss enhancement, swirl reduction or deeper paint repair. Confirm the surface is conventional gloss paint permitted by the vehicle and coating maker, then choose wash-only or wash-and-polish process and a sensible pack size.
| Check | Why it matters | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Product role | Shampoo lifts dirt in water; polish refines clean paint abrasively | High Shine Shampoo or Ultimate Shine Polish full title |
| Finish | Gloss paint, matt paint, wrap and ceramic coatings respond differently | Vehicle and coating-care instructions |
| Defect | Traffic film, swirl, etching and deep scratch need different action | Clean inspection under diffuse and direct light |
| Pack size | Large stock can age or become contaminated if rarely used | 500ml or 1-litre consumption and storage plan |
| Application | Dilution, cloth, working time and temperature affect results | Current MER label and safety data |
| Protection | Polish preparation and final wax are separate stages | Desired protection and compatible follow-on product |
Do not buy the larger polish merely to apply more product per panel. A thin, controlled application is easier to buff and reduces residue around trim. Use volume for the number of jobs, not aggressiveness.
High Shine Car Shampoo in 500ml and 1 litre
Both shampoo sizes contain the same evidenced High Shine formula. The product is intended for cleaning with water, using foam action to lift road dirt and traffic film while leaving a glossy finish. Read the bottle for the current dilution and number of capfuls because water hardness, bucket volume and revised labels make improvised ratios unreliable.
Rinse grit before contact, use a clean mitt and separate dirty wheel tools from paint equipment. Work panel by panel from the cleaner upper vehicle downwards, rinsing the mitt regularly. Do not let solution dry on glass, trim or paint. Rinse thoroughly and dry with a clean soft towel or controlled air, avoiding dragging trapped particles across the finish.
Ultimate Shine Polish in 500ml and 1 litre
MER describes Ultimate Polish as cleaning, shining and protecting while conditioning dull paint and addressing eligible micro-scratches and swirls. It contains mild abrasive action, so each application removes or alters a small amount of surface. Both pack sizes use the same hand-application sequence and should be shaken as directed before dispensing.
Place a small amount on a soft lint-free cloth, not directly on the panel, and use overlapping motion while avoiding plastic trim. Allow it to dry to the stated haze, then buff with a separate clean lint-free or microfibre cloth. If residue is difficult to remove, do not add harsh solvent; check panel temperature, product amount and instructions.
Paint inspection and scratch limits
Wash and decontaminate before deciding that a mark needs polish. Mineral deposits, transferred paint and tar can mimic scratches but require suitable removal methods. Examine in stable lighting. If a scratch catches deeply, shows primer or exposes metal or plastic, polishing surrounding paint cannot rebuild the lost layers.
Check panel history and thickness where repeated machine or hand correction may have occurred. Use a discreet test patch and compare gloss after residue removal. Stop if the applicator shows unexpected body colour, if clearcoat becomes patchy or if edges reveal thinning. Sharp edges, raised swages and repainted areas need particular caution.
Special finishes, trim and follow-on protection
Vehicle-specific matt or satin paint depends on uniform low gloss and should not be polished unless its maker authorises a product. Vinyl wraps, paint-protection film, ceramic coatings and fresh refinishing can also have special wash and cure requirements. The general MER paint claim should not override those instructions.
Mask or avoid textured plastic and porous rubber because dried white polish residue can lodge in their surface. Keep polish off glass, cameras, sensors and friction surfaces. MER positions Ultimate Polish as preparation before wax, so choose a compatible protection step separately if required. Applying polish repeatedly is not a substitute for maintaining wax or coating.
Safe use, storage and cloth care
Wear eye and skin protection appropriate to the current safety sheet and wash hands after work. High Shine Shampoo safety data identifies serious eye-damage and skin-irritation hazards, so prevent splashes and keep eyewash available. Do not mix either product with bleach, acid or another cleaner. Control runoff and comply with local wash-water arrangements.
Store bottles upright, closed and protected from frost and heat. Label wash mitts, applicators and buffing cloths by task and wash them without fabric conditioner where the textile maker directs. Discard cloths contaminated with grit or unknown chemicals. Keep polish applicators separate from wax and glass towels so abrasive residue is not carried onto delicate surfaces.
From identification to a checked result
| Stage | Good practice for this range | Mistake to avoid |
|---|---|---|
| Assess | Identify dirt, swirl, scratch, finish type and existing coating | Polishing before understanding the mark |
| Wash | Pre-rinse, dilute shampoo, use clean tools, rinse and dry | Using neat shampoo or one mitt for wheels and paint |
| Test | Apply a small polish area with clean lint-free cloth | Covering the whole vehicle before checking compatibility |
| Refine | Use minimal product, allow haze and buff with a separate cloth | Scrubbing deep damage or hot panels |
| Protect | Inspect true finish and add compatible wax if required | Assuming more polish equals longer protection |
Record which panels were polished, any repaint history and the follow-on protection. This avoids unnecessary abrasive treatment at the next wash when shampoo alone may be sufficient.
Reading real MER references
The MER names below are examples from the current range and show why the complete description matters. They are not universal MER recommendations and should not be treated as a fitment list. Within MER, a shared family word can conceal a different dimension, connector, material, pack format, operating condition or installation side.
| Example listing | What to verify beyond the name |
|---|---|
| Ultimate Shine Polish - 1 Litre | High Shine Shampoo or Ultimate Shine Polish and 500ml or 1-litre pack |
| Ultimate Shine Polish - 500ml | Paint colour, gloss level, wrap, film, coating and repaint or cure status |
| High Shine Car Shampoo - 1 Litre | Dirt, swirl, etching, scratch depth, edge condition and test result |
| High Shine Car Shampoo - 500ml | Label dilution, cloth assignment, panel temperature, safety data and wash-water control |
The handle includes MER AST, reflecting the Auto Shine Technologie wording, but the consumer brand is MER. Use the full product name and pack size rather than treating AST as a separate formulation.
Common errors around MER products
- Using Ultimate Polish as shampoo or adding it to wash water.
- Using High Shine Shampoo neat to attack heavy traffic film.
- Polishing dirty paint and dragging grit across the clearcoat.
- Applying polish directly to the vehicle instead of the cloth as MER instructs.
- Using abrasive polish on an unapproved matt, wrapped or coated finish.
- Trying to remove a scratch through clearcoat by repeated heavy rubbing.
- Allowing shampoo or polish to dry on a hot panel in direct sun.
- Reusing a contaminated wheel or polishing cloth on paint and glass.
