Threaded fasteners, nuts and washers
Measure a threaded fastener rather than guessing. Record nominal diameter, pitch or threads per inch, under-head length, head form and drive. Separate metric coarse, metric fine, UNC, UNF and other systems. A nut that starts for one turn can still have a mismatched pitch and damage both threads under load.
Strength grade matters only in the joint for which it is specified. Do not replace a shouldered, flanged, prevailing-torque, stretch or captive fastener with a plain set screw because diameter and length match. Clean female threads carefully and inspect for corrosion, pulled material or previous cross-threading. Start new hardware by hand. If resistance appears before engagement is established, stop and compare pitch. Never use a powered tool to force a doubtful thread.
Self-tappers, rivets and trim clips
Self-tapping screws depend on substrate thickness, pilot hole, point form, diameter and head seating. Repeated removal can enlarge a hole until the screw no longer clamps. Disconnect batteries only by the vehicle manufacturer's method. Modern vehicles may have monitored batteries, security systems, stored settings and pyrotechnic devices. Prevent tools bridging the positive terminal to earth, and keep ignition sources away from battery gases. After reconnection, complete any prescribed registration or calibration process.
Fuses, holders and circuit protection
A fuse protects wiring against excessive current; it is not selected to protect only the accessory. Match blade, mini blade, micro, glass, ceramic or another physical family, then use the circuit's specified ampere rating and voltage capability. Different fuse bodies that can be improvised into contact are not valid substitutes.
The holder must accept the fuse type, cable size and circuit current.
