Water freezes into a crystal network on cold glass. Alcohols and glycols mix with the melting film and lower its freezing point, while surfactants help liquid spread. The product needs contact time and enough concentration at the surface to work.
Wind, very low temperature, thick ice and dilution by snow reduce performance. Mechanical removal remains necessary, and any liquid left on a cold vehicle may refreeze as its volatile component evaporates.

Chemistry and compatibility
The minimum temperature claim depends on concentration
Ethanol, isopropanol and glycol-based mixtures differ in evaporation, flammability, odour and low-temperature behaviour. Additives may protect rubber or help cleaning, but complete formulation determines compatibility.
Water dilution, heavy frost and repeated application change the surface mixture. Use the label’s temperature range as a controlled-use limit rather than a guarantee under every weather condition.

Prepare before starting the vehicle
Check that the tailpipe is free of snow and the vehicle is outdoors or in a properly ventilated location. Never idle in a closed garage; carbon monoxide can accumulate without smell.
Ensure wipers and washers are switched off before ignition because automatic rain-sensing systems may command frozen blades. Disable automatic operation using the vehicle method if necessary.
Snow removal
Brush loose snow from the roof, bonnet and boot as well as glazing. Snow left on the roof can slide over the windscreen under braking or strike another road user.

Why hot water is unsafe
Rapid temperature change creates stress across glass, particularly around chips and edges. Even if glass survives, water can run into locks and seals and freeze again on the screen, wipers or ground.
Lukewarm water is also difficult to control in sub-zero air and is unnecessary when gradual cabin heat, approved de-icer and scraping are available.
Wipers and washer system
Lift blades only if the vehicle allows it and ice has released them. Forcing an arm can damage the hinge, scratch the bonnet edge or change blade pressure. Never pull on the rubber wiping element.
Use winter screenwash mixed for the forecast temperature. Summer dilution can freeze in the reservoir, pump, hoses or jets; repeatedly running a frozen pump can burn it out.
Heated glass and mirrors
Electrical heaters warm glass gradually and assist de-icing, but they need time. A broken element or low system voltage reduces effect. Do not scrape aggressively across printed rear-window conductors.
Switch high-current heaters off after clearing if the vehicle does not manage them automatically. Diagnose repeated fuse failure rather than fitting a larger fuse.
Locks, handles and doors
Use lock de-icer only in a traditional cylinder for which it is approved. Do not heat a key with a flame or pour de-icer into an electronic handle, keypad or charge-port mechanism.
A frozen door seal should be released gradually around its perimeter. Pulling the handle forcefully can tear rubber, detach trim or break a cable.
Driver-assistance sensors

Interior ice and condensation
Ice inside the windscreen indicates high cabin humidity, often from wet mats, blocked drains, seal leaks or insufficient ventilation. Do not spray exterior de-icer around interior trim unless explicitly approved.
Remove moisture sources, use the demist system with suitable fresh airflow and inspect pollen-filter and air-conditioning performance.
Storage and flammability
Many de-icers contain flammable alcohol. Store upright in the original container away from sparks, heaters and direct sun; aerosol cans must not be exposed to excessive heat or punctured.
Ventilate while spraying and avoid inhaling mist. Clean spills promptly because concentrated liquid can make surfaces slippery.
Environmental care
Use only enough product to release the ice. Large quantities run into drains and soil, while propellants and packaging add waste. Capture avoidable spills and follow local disposal guidance.
Prevent puddles from refreezing on pavements where they create a hazard for pedestrians.

Common errors include using hot water, scraping with metal, operating frozen wipers, leaving roof snow, mixing unknown chemicals in the washer bottle and driving through a letterbox-sized clear patch.
Do not use antifreeze coolant, salt or household washing-up liquid on vehicle glass. Their residues and material effects are unsuitable.
