PPE controls residual risk after higher-level controls
Machine guarding, quieter processes, exclusion zones, maintenance and safe material storage should prevent or reduce exposure first. Personal protection sits on the wearer and can be defeated by poor fit, non-use or incompatible equipment, so it is the final layer rather than permission to leave hazards uncontrolled.
Selection must come from the task and exposure, not a generic workshop rule.

A bump cap is not a lightweight hard hat
Its shell and textile cap are intended for bumps against shelving, vehicle lifts or low structures. It does not provide the same crown impact and penetration performance as an industrial safety helmet. Where objects can fall, be thrown or swing into the head, use the protection required by that risk assessment.
Do not choose from appearance; read the permanent marking and user information.
Optional helmet properties must be explicitly marked
Electrical insulation, lateral deformation, molten-metal splash and very high or low temperature are not inherent in every helmet. Vents, metal accessories and unapproved attachments can defeat electrical performance. Match every special hazard to the declared test property and workplace system.
A helmet marketed for general construction is not automatically suitable for arc-flash, forestry or work at height.
Fit and retention control the protected area
Adjust the harness to sit level at the maker's stated height, with clearance between shell and head. Use the compatible chinstrap where movement, wind or work position can dislodge it. Hair, caps and hooded clothing must not interfere unless approved for use beneath the helmet.
One shell size may not fit every wearer; provide a suitable range.

Impact retirement is not based only on visible damage
A shell and harness can absorb energy through deformation that is difficult to see. Remove a helmet from service after a significant impact according to its instructions. Do not return it because a surface mark polishes away.
Record issue and inspection dates, storage conditions and incidents. Follow the maker's life and replacement criteria rather than inventing one universal number of years.
Noise exposure combines level and duration
Daily or weekly exposure is not the same as a single sound-level reading. Peak impact noise also matters. A competent assessment measures or estimates the tasks, durations and sources, including combined exposure across the shift.
HSE identifies lower and upper exposure action values and a separate limit; workplace decisions must use the current official rules and competent calculation.

SNR is a selection tool, not the real level at every ear
Single Number Rating summarises laboratory attenuation. HML data separates high-, medium- and low-frequency behaviour, while octave-band calculation can refine selection. Workplace fit, wear time, eyewear and anatomy reduce achieved attenuation.
Use the HSE selection approach and consider fit testing where appropriate. Do not subtract SNR from an arbitrary phone-app reading and call the result proven.
Overprotection creates its own safety problem
Excess attenuation can isolate the wearer from alarms, reversing vehicles and colleagues. HSE advises avoiding protection that reduces the level at the ear too far and recommends choosing sufficient rather than maximum protection. Communication needs should be engineered into the selection.
Never lift one cup or loosen a plug to hear speech in the hazard zone.
Continuous wear determines effective protection
Brief unprotected periods have a disproportionate effect on daily protected exposure. Put protectors on before entering a mandatory zone and keep them correctly fitted for the whole exposure. Provide clean storage and practical communication so removal is not encouraged.
Supervision and training should check actual fit, not merely possession.
Foam plugs need a repeatable insertion method
Start with clean hands
Roll the plug into a smooth narrow cylinder without creasing it. Do not contaminate the surface.
Open the ear canal
Reach over and pull the ear as the product instructions show, then insert to the correct depth.
Hold while it expands
Keep it in place until sealed, then perform the specified fit check. Remove slowly by twisting to release pressure.
Earmuff cushions need an uninterrupted seal
Position cups fully around the ears and adjust the band evenly. Thick spectacle arms, long hair, jewellery, respirator straps and hood seams can create gaps. Select compatible low-profile eyewear or an integrated system rather than accepting a leak.
Do not store muffs clamped around a dirty helmet because cushions compress and age.
Electronic features do not replace protection performance
Bluetooth, communication microphones and hearing-assist modes can improve situational awareness, but they also introduce batteries, controls and maximum audio levels. Confirm the product's hearing-protection certification in the exact wearing configuration and set communication audio safely.
A consumer earbud with noise cancellation is not automatically occupational hearing protection.
Combining helmet, defenders, visor and respirator needs testing
Use approved adapters and check that one item does not lift another. Helmet-mounted cups need sufficient pressure in the working position, a visor must close without disturbing cushions and respirator straps must retain their facial seal.
Perform all fit checks together in the clothing used for the task.
Cleaning must preserve the protective material
Use mild products and methods listed by the manufacturer. Solvent, paint, adhesive and strong disinfectant can embrittle helmet shells or harden ear cushions. Do not immerse electronic cups.
Replace consumable cushions, foam inserts and hygiene kits at their condition or schedule limits. Personal earplugs should not be shared.
Storage protects PPE from silent degradation
Keep equipment dry, clean and away from direct sunlight, oils, battery chemicals, welding spatter and excessive heat. A vehicle parcel shelf or dashboard can exceed permitted storage temperature. Store helmets so nothing deforms the shell or harness.
Quarantine rejected PPE so it cannot return to service accidentally.
