HSE guidance places PPE after reasonably practicable engineering controls and safe working methods. In a workshop, for example, extraction and substitution address airborne contaminants at source; guards control contact with machinery; isolation prevents unexpected movement. Gloves, eyewear or RPE may still be needed for the remaining risk, but they should not be used to excuse a preventable exposure.
Workwear, high visibility and weather layers
The represented Portwest clothing range includes ordinary workwear, stretch and holster trousers, rain garments, insulated layers, flame-resistant styles and many high-visibility pieces. Treat these as distinct functions. General work trousers can provide pockets and abrasion resistance without carrying a specialist protective standard. For high-visibility clothing, verify the standard and class printed for the exact garment. EN ISO 20471 class depends partly on the areas of fluorescent background and retroreflective material. A jacket and trouser combination may achieve a result that neither item achieves alone only where the product information explicitly supports that combination. Fasten the garment as intended and keep reflective bands unobscured by tools, bags or outer layers.
Portwest product pages provide wash symbols and, for some certified hi-vis garments, a maximum number of wash cycles. Follow the item-specific limit. Dirt, fading, damaged tape and unauthorised shortening can reduce conspicuity. A clean vest with badly abraded reflective bands may still be unserviceable even though the fabric remains wearable.

Do not alter certified PPE casually. Taking up a trouser through reflective tape, embroidering a protective panel or applying a transfer can change the tested construction. Safety footwear: decode the complete marking
The footwear shown in this range includes boots, ankle boots, trainers and shoes, with steel and composite language appearing across different styles. Toe-cap material is only one decision. Establish whether the task requires resistance to penetration, water, fuel oil, heat, cold, static build-up or electrostatic discharge, then verify the marked classification and any additional symbols on that exact pair.
Fit should be checked with the work socks and orthoses that will be used. Toes need space, the heel should remain controlled, and the fastening must hold the foot without creating pressure points. A larger size is not a reliable cure for the wrong width or last. Walk on stairs and inclines during a trial where possible, because heel movement and sole flexibility can feel different from standing.
Inspect tread, upper, stitching, sole bond, eyelets and fastenings. Replace footwear after significant impact or penetration even when external damage seems modest, following workplace procedure and product guidance. Do not drill, cut or insert unauthorised components into protective footwear. Insoles can contribute to fit and protective performance; substitutes should be explicitly suitable for the model.
Hand protection needs a task-level decision
Portwest lists general handling, thermal, cut-resistant, chemical, welding, rigger, impact and disposable glove families. The evidence here includes coated knit gloves, winter styles and welding gauntlets. Their names describe intended areas, not blanket permission. Under EN 388, separate characters report aspects such as abrasion, blade cut, tear, puncture and, where tested, impact; the values are not a single overall score.
A coating can alter grip and liquid resistance, while the liner gauge affects feel and dexterity. Nitrile, latex, polyurethane and leather have different strengths and chemical limitations. Consult permeation data for the actual substance and exposure conditions before chemical work. A glove that resists a brief splash may not suit immersion. Replace contaminated gloves according to the safe removal and disposal process rather than washing them without authorisation.

Eye, head, hearing and respiratory protection
Safety spectacles offer limited side and seal coverage compared with goggles; a face shield protects more of the face but may still require primary eye protection beneath it. Match impact, optical and liquid or dust markings to the hazard. Scratched lenses, stretched headbands and chemical clouding justify replacement because they can impair both protection and vision.
Head protection must suit impact, electrical and environmental needs and be compatible with mounted hearing or face equipment. Check shell and harness dates or life instructions, inspect after impact and do not apply unauthorised solvents, paints or stickers. Hearing protection should be selected against measured exposure without excessive attenuation that isolates the wearer from essential warnings.
Respiratory protection is a specialised control. HSE requires RPE to be adequate for the hazard and suitable for the wearer, task and environment. Tight-fitting facepieces need face-fit testing, and facial hair can prevent a seal. Filters must match the contaminant, while oxygen-deficient spaces need a different approach entirely. Training, examination, maintenance, storage and records form part of an effective RPE programme.
Compatibility between items

Compatibility also includes the wearer. Skin sensitivity, prescription eyewear, facial shape, mobility and medical needs can change the suitable choice. A selection trial with the people who will use the equipment often reveals misting, poor grip or pressure issues before they become reasons to remove PPE during work.
Inspection, cleaning and controlled replacement
Create checks around the product's risk and instructions. Clothing needs clean reflective and protective surfaces, sound seams and functioning closures. Gloves need intact fingertips, coatings and cuffs. Footwear needs secure soles and usable tread. Eye and face protection needs clear, undamaged lenses and reliable adjustment. Reusable RPE requires its specified pre-use seal checks, cleaning and maintenance.
Store clean, dry equipment away from sunlight, chemicals, crushing and extremes of temperature unless the instructions say otherwise. Segregate contaminated articles. Record issue, inspection and replacement where the workplace system requires traceability. Never return failed PPE to a shared store merely because it still looks tidy.
