Confirm the VIN, engine identifier, build date and complete reference on the existing coil, then check the live application notes for the candidate product. Three coils may share an outline yet present different connector keys, pin functions, internal power stages, winding characteristics, boot lengths or mounting details. Never modify a plug or wiring loom to force a close-looking part to fit.

The coil is an energy-conversion device. During dwell, current in its primary circuit creates a magnetic field; the controller then interrupts that current so the secondary circuit can generate the voltage required at the spark plug. Battery condition, charging voltage, grounds, switch command, cylinder pressure and plug gap all influence the result. A fault at any of those points can resemble coil failure.

Before removal, save diagnostic codes, freeze-frame data and misfire counts. Check supply and ground voltage drop, connector contact, plug type and wear, oil or water in the well, and wiring affected by heat. If ignition evidence is sound, continue with injector, air-leak and compression checks. Do not rely on an improvised resistance figure or a visible spark in free air to judge how a modern coil behaves under cylinder load.

Switch the ignition off, secure the key and let the engine cool. High secondary voltage can injure and damage control electronics, while exposed sparks can ignite vapour. Use the vehicle’s specified test points and insulated equipment. On installation, preserve seals and loom routing, use the correct fastener and torque and fit only the specified spark plug and gap.

Validate the repair during cold start, idle, controlled load and hot restart, reviewing counters and returning faults. A flashing engine warning, severe vibration, strong fuel smell or sudden power loss demands a safe stop because continued misfire can overheat the catalyst. Applicable warning-lamp and emissions defects can affect a Great Britain MOT, but passing the test does not confirm reference compatibility or replace diagnosis.
