A door handle is one link in the latch system
Pulling the handle rotates a lever or tensions a cable. The latch releases its claw from the body striker only when lock and deadlock mechanisms permit. Return springs restore both handle and latch.
Modern exterior handles may send an electrical request rather than directly releasing the latch. Mechanical emergency access remains vehicle-specific.

Diagnose before dismantling
Observe whether the handle feels loose, unusually stiff or normal. Listen for actuator operation, compare other doors, scan body-control faults and test mechanical key operation.
A normal handle with no release suggests latch/lock state. A floppy lever suggests detached/broken linkage. Stiffness may come from ice, misalignment or internal corrosion.

Child locks and deadlocks
A rear child lock intentionally disables the interior handle. Deadlocking may disable both inside release and lock buttons after a particular locking command. Confirm operating state with the owner information.
Do not dismantle a functional handle to correct a selected safety mode. Conversely, never leave a child lock mechanism between detents.
Door alignment and striker load
A sagging hinge or misadjusted striker can load the latch so the handle feels heavy. Lift movement at the open door and inspect witness marks, gaps and closure effort.
Do not adjust the striker merely to disguise worn hinges. Its position affects sealing, crash retention and body alignment.
Safety preparation
Read the restraint and power-window procedure. Side airbags may sit in the door or seat, and some frameless windows drop automatically when a handle is touched.
Isolate power and wait the specified time. Keep the key away from passive-entry vehicles so handles and locks cannot wake unexpectedly.

Moisture membrane
Water normally passes the outer glass seal into the door and exits drains. A bonded membrane stops it reaching interior trim. Cut or poorly resealed membrane causes wet carpets and electrical corrosion.
Peel it using controlled heat only if specified and restore with the correct butyl or adhesive path. Keep drains open.
Glass and regulator hazards
The regulator can move with high force and has shear points. Support or position glass exactly as the handle-carrier procedure requires, then isolate the motor.
Do not insert hands through access holes while someone operates the switch. Broken tempered glass needs eye, hand and trim protection.
Exterior-handle removal
Some handles release through a door-edge screw that must not be fully removed; others require carrier access inside. Hold the handle so it cannot fall against paint.
Release keyless connectors and rods by their locking tabs. Photograph routing, but service data determines final orientation.
Lock-barrel transfer
Keep coded tumblers clean and preserve security clips. Do not lubricate with grease unless specified, because it can collect grit and stiffen in cold weather.
Test the mechanical emergency key before closing the door. A vehicle with flat battery still needs its designed access route.
Rods, cables and clips
Rod clips rotate into positive lock; cable outers seat in brackets so inner travel reaches the latch. A cable outer left partly seated makes the handle feel normal but shortens release travel.
Route away from glass and avoid tight bends. Replace fractured clips with the correct part rather than wire or cable ties.
Keyless electronics
Passive-entry handles can contain capacitive sensors and low-frequency aerials. Water ingress, poor earth, electromagnetic interference and damaged shielding can mimic a bad sensor.
Follow coding and calibration requirements. Do not paint over sensing zones or bury earth contact beneath thick coating.
Cold-weather and contamination effects
Water trapped behind a handle can freeze around pivots or presentation mechanisms. Road salt then accelerates corrosion as it thaws. Use only the vehicle-approved de-icing and lubrication method; hot water can refreeze deeper inside the door.
Heavy polish or pressure-washing at a keyless handle can enter sensor seams and create false touch requests. Clean gently and preserve drain paths rather than sealing designed gaps with silicone.
Paint preparation
Primed handles need a compatible refinishing system and controlled film thickness around clips, sensors and mating faces. Remove electronics before baking only where the procedure allows.
Allow full cure before assembly. Soft paint under a gasket creeps, and excess coating can jam a flush handle.

Close-door verification
Only close after repeated successful open-door latch simulation using the approved method. Keep a window open or an alternative access path during initial test where safe.
Confirm primary and secondary latch engagement, body gaps, warning switch and central locking. Water-test without high-pressure forcing at seals.
Common mistakes
Errors include ordering the wrong side, closing before testing, leaving a cable outer unseated, tearing the membrane, trapping wiring in the window path and painting sensor surfaces.
Do not slam a door to free a latch, force a frozen flush handle or use adhesive to repair a structural carrier.

Doors must latch securely, and required doors should be openable as assessed under MOT rules. A door that could open while moving or trap an occupant is unsafe.
