Auto-dimming test
Clean both light-sensor windows, switch on under the specified conditions and shade the forward sensor while illuminating the rear sensor. Dimming can be gradual. Confirm reverse selection clears it where designed.
Do not use a high-power lamp close enough to overheat the sensor or glass.
Windscreen bond and button repair
Mark the exact original position, remove old adhesive by the approved method and inspect for chips or delamination. Glass and button need specified preparation and temperature. Use the named mirror adhesive and curing time.
Do not attach the mirror before cure or bond over damaged glass. A camera-bracket repair generally needs windscreen-specialist procedure.

Electrochromic leakage
A failed cell can show a dark edge, amber patch or bubbles. Treat escaped material cautiously, protect trim and wash exposure according to product/safety guidance. Do not puncture the glass.
Internal cells are not normally refilled; replace the correct assembly.
Optical quality and double images
A manual prism mirror intentionally produces two potential reflections, but the selected day position should give one useful bright image. A loose lever, warped backing or delaminated glass can leave ghosting that becomes distracting at night.
Electrochromic mirrors should darken evenly without fixed bands or colour pools. Compare from the normal driving position; replacing only a decorative cover cannot correct optical distortion.
Digital camera mirrors
Some vehicles display a rear-camera image in the mirror and allow switching to a conventional reflection. Fitment then includes camera, video link, display resolution, calibration and software. A black screen may result from camera power, tailgate wiring or network faults rather than the mirror panel.
Verify image orientation, latency, brightness and field of view. The camera lens must remain clean and securely mounted; digital magnification can alter apparent distance and needs driver familiarisation.
Microphones, emergency call and status indicators
Integrated microphones may serve hands-free calling, voice control or emergency-call systems. Pinouts and acoustic ports differ even when a mirror fits the same button. Do not cover microphone slots with adhesive, trim foam or cleaning product.
After installation, make a stationary audio check and confirm emergency-system self-test without placing an unnecessary live emergency call. A warning requires diagnostic investigation.
Headlining and wiring-route care
The mirror loom can run above the headlining near curtain airbags. Lower trim only by the vehicle procedure and never route wires across an airbag deployment path. Refit clips, foam anti-rattle pieces and edge protection.
Accessory dash-camera wires should not be trapped beneath the mirror mount or spliced into an unknown sensor supply. Use an approved fused source and routing plan.
Cleaning different mirror surfaces
Dust first with a clean soft cloth, then apply a small amount of compatible glass cleaner to the cloth. Abrasive paper, ammonia on sensitive films and aggressive polish can damage anti-glare or electrochromic surfaces.
Clean sensor windows separately and leave no wax or dressing. Fluid entering the lower edge can attack the internal cell or electronics.
Fault-code and current-drain checks
An electronic mirror may retain power for timed functions and then sleep. If battery drain follows replacement, compare current only after the vehicle completes its normal sleep cycle and check whether the mirror remains awake on the data bus.
Scan relevant body, camera and telematics modules. A communication code can arise from pin mismatch or a harness fault, not just a defective mirror.
Collision and windscreen replacement history
A replacement windscreen may carry a differently positioned button, ceramic mask or sensor bracket. Confirm the glass application rather than forcing covers to fit. Evidence of re-bonding, excess adhesive or a cracked ceramic area warrants specialist assessment.
After collision work, verify mirror position does not interfere with sun visors, camera covers or the driver's forward field. Loose trim around the bracket can become a distraction or projectile.
When the vehicle should not be driven
Do not continue if the mirror is hanging from wiring, the windscreen is cracking around the button, a camera bracket is loose or the mirror cannot hold a usable rearward view. Secure recovery avoids the assembly falling during braking or obstructing the driver.
If only electronic dimming is unavailable but the reflection is clear and stable, assess promptly and reduce night glare safely; never cover the mirror with an opaque object while driving.
Camera and sensor calibration
If a forward camera, bracket or windscreen position changes, follow static/dynamic calibration requirements with correct targets, tyre pressure, ride height and alignment. A clear warning lamp is not proof calibration is correct.
Rain/light sensors may need a new optical gel pad seated without bubbles.
Installation
Engage the mount in its designed direction and torque any screw modestly to specification. Route wiring through original clips, keeping it out of camera fields and headlining edges.
Fit covers without forcing them. A cover that will not close usually indicates wrong mirror, connector position or trapped loom.
Adjustment and visibility
From the normal driving position, centre the rear window view with minimal interior reflected. The mirror must remain stable over bumps. Remove hanging objects that obstruct vision or become projectiles.
Clean with a compatible product applied to a cloth, not sprayed at seams and electronics.
