Screenwash

Screenwash is a formulated windscreen-cleaning fluid that helps remove road film, salt, insects and oily contamination while protecting the washer system in cold conditions. It contains detergents plus solvents and freeze-control ingredients selected for automotive pumps, hoses, jets, paint and glazing. Concentrate needs measured dilution; ready-mixed product is used as supplied unless its label states otherwise.

Select for the lowest expected temperature, concentrate ratio, vehicle-material compatibility and cleaning duty. Check whether the vehicle has headlamp washers, fan jets, heated nozzles, a level sensor or camera area with special fluid guidance. Freeze-protection claims apply only at stated dilution. Adding more water than specified raises the freezing point and can split pumps, tanks or pipes.

Identify the washer reservoir by the handbook and cap symbol. Never pour screenwash into coolant, brake fluid, AdBlue or power-steering reservoirs, and never add engine antifreeze to the washer bottle. Washing-up liquid can foam excessively, leave glare-producing residue and affect paint or seals. Plain water lacks suitable cleaning and winter protection.

Mix concentrate in a clean labelled container using the stated water quality and ratio, or add in the order directed by the product maker. Avoid combining unknown screenwash chemistries because precipitation or gel can block filters and fan jets. Do not use hot water to thaw a frozen bottle or windscreen; allow controlled thawing and inspect for damage.

Screenwash can irritate and may contain flammable or toxic alcohols. Avoid skin and eye contact, ventilate, keep away from flames and never decant into drinks bottles. After filling, test front, rear and headlamp washers where fitted, confirm jets cover the swept area and check leaks. A failed washer, split hose or poor wiper must be repaired rather than masked with stronger fluid. Screenwash cleans while protecting the washer circuit

A windscreen collects mineral spray, exhaust film, insects, salt and traffic grime. Water alone struggles with oily material and freezes near 0°C. Screenwash combines surfactants and solvents to wet, lift and carry contamination while lowering freezing temperature.

The formula must also tolerate plastics, rubber, paint, pumps and heated jets. Household detergents are not designed for this system.

Dilution determines freeze protection

A concentrate label provides ratios or volumes for defined temperatures. Use consistent units and account for fluid already in the reservoir. Topping a half-full bottle of water with a small winter dose may not reach the claimed protection.

A refractometer reading is chemistry-specific; an engine-coolant scale may not accurately assess screenwash. When mixture is unknown before severe frost, drain and refill by the approved method.

Surfactants

Surfactants lower surface tension so fluid spreads and lifts dirt. Too much foam reduces pump delivery and leaves residue.

Alcohols and solvents

Approved alcohols improve oily-film removal and lower freeze point. They also create flammability and toxicity hazards, particularly in concentrate.

Water and additives

Water quality influences mineral deposits. Dyes, fragrance, corrosion inhibitors and bittering agents vary, so colour and smell do not prove specification.

Correct reservoir identification

The washer cap commonly shows a windscreen/spray symbol, but location varies. Some vehicles have separate front/rear or intensive-cleaning reservoirs. Read the handbook before opening any cap.

Cross-filling brake, coolant, AdBlue or oil systems can cause serious damage. If fluid enters the wrong reservoir, do not operate the vehicle or pump; arrange system-specific decontamination.

Mixing procedure

Use a clean dedicated measuring container. Follow whether concentrate should be mixed before filling or combined in the reservoir. Measure rather than counting arbitrary capfuls.

Do not mix unknown brands or seasonal formulations. If gel, flakes or cloudiness appear, stop using the washers, drain safely and flush only by an approved method.

Frozen systems

Ice expands and can crack reservoir seams, pumps, check valves and hose connectors. Do not hold the switch hoping current will thaw the motor; stalled pumps overheat. Place the vehicle somewhere safely above freezing and let the complete circuit warm slowly without localised heat.

After thaw, drain unsuitable mixture, inspect leaks and refill with adequate protection. Never apply open flame, heat gun or boiling water.

Jets and filters

Some pumps use a grommet filter inside the tank. Slime or precipitate restricts it. Fan jets have fine internal passages and can be damaged by needles or compressed air.

Use the manufacturer’s back-flush or replacement method. Align adjustable jets so fluid reaches the swept glass without spraying following traffic.

Wipers and glass condition

Good fluid cannot compensate for split, hardened or incorrectly fitted blades. Clean the wiping edge and glass, inspect arm pressure and ensure the blade size and spoiler orientation are correct.

Stone damage, delamination and coating defects can create glare. Do not use abrasive household cleaner on camera zones or treated windscreens.

Seasonal changeover and stored mixture

Prepare for winter before the first forecast frost. Reservoir liquid may be stronger than fluid trapped in long rear-washer pipes, so operate each circuit until the new mixture reaches every jet. Confirm headlamp-washer lines where fitted, because their exposed sections can freeze first.

In spring, do not weaken a known winter mix merely to use leftover water. Maintain adequate cleaning, then change concentration at the next controlled refill. Label any pre-mixed spare with product, ratio and date; discard unknown liquid rather than guessing from colour.

Water quality and reservoir hygiene

Hard water can leave mineral deposits in fine nozzles and on glass, while dirty storage containers introduce sediment. Use the water quality stated by the concentrate maker and keep measuring jugs dedicated, capped and clean. Rainwater from an uncontrolled source can contain organic growth or grit.

If a reservoir develops slime or repeated blockage, remove and clean it by the vehicle procedure rather than adding stronger solvent. Inspect the filler strainer, pump grommet and hoses, then rinse only with a compatible liquid so residue does not react with the fresh screenwash.

Safety and storage

Read the safety data sheet. Concentrate can be harmful if swallowed and may be flammable. Wear eye protection, avoid breathing vapour and wash spills from skin. Keep away from children, pets, sparks and food.

Store in its original sealed labelled container within temperature limits. Never decant into a drinks bottle. Dispose of old mixture through a route suitable for its chemistry.

Environmental care

Do not pour concentrate into drains, soil or surface water. Capture fluid when draining a reservoir. Overspray during normal use should still be minimised through correct jet alignment.

Repair leaks that discharge fluid continuously and avoid operating headlamp washers unnecessarily in a workshop.

UK MOT and roadworthiness

The applicable MOT requires windscreen washers and wipers to provide an adequate view for vehicles within scope. An empty or frozen system can therefore cause a defect and makes driving unsafe in dirty conditions.

Keep screenwash appropriate to season and check before long journeys. Carrying a bottle does not help if the pump, jets or blades are defective.
