Vehicle bulbs: match the complete code
The lighting evidence includes familiar H1, H4 and H7 halogen headlamp bulbs, H8, H9, H11, H15, HB3, HB4 and HiR2 formats, plus D1S, D2S, D2R, D3S and D4S-type HID references. Smaller lamps use bases such as BA15s, BAY15d, BAU15s, BAX9s and capless or festoon formats. Those letters and numbers encode different geometry and electrical arrangements; similar-looking glass does not make two bulbs substitutes.
Voltage, wattage and base
Start with the vehicle handbook, removed lamp and holder marking. Confirm nominal voltage and rated wattage, then the exact source and cap designation. A dual-filament lamp needs the correct contact arrangement and locating pins. An amber indicator bulb may use offset pins to prevent a clear lamp being inserted. Festoon bulbs also differ in physical length, so measure only against reliable specification rather than compressing the contacts to make one fit.
Halogen and HID are separate systems
Halogen bulbs contain a filament and operate directly from the intended lighting circuit. HID sources need high-voltage starting and control gear, and D2S and D2R, for example, serve different optical arrangements. DVSA warns that HID systems use high voltage. Isolate the system using the vehicle procedure and leave diagnosis to a suitably trained person where igniters or ballasts are involved.

Installation and UK lighting requirements
Switch off the lamp, remove the key as instructed and allow the assembly to cool. Access panels and spring clips can be fragile; photograph cable routing if it is not obvious. Do not touch the quartz envelope of a halogen bulb unless its instructions permit handling, and never operate an unshielded source while looking directly at it.
After fitting, check dipped and main beam, indicators, hazards, stop, tail, fog, reversing and position functions as applicable. Verify emitted colour and compare paired lamps. The DVSA MOT manual requires mandatory paired headlamps to be compatible and substantially matched in colour and intensity. Existing halogen headlamp units on vehicles first used from 1 April 1986 must not be converted for HID or LED bulbs; a complete purpose-made replacement lamp is treated differently but must still meet the applicable requirements.
Headlamp aim can change after bulb replacement, particularly if the source is not seated flat. Confirm the retaining clip and cap are secure and have the beam checked where pattern or aim is doubtful. Never rotate, file or adapt a base to alter the cut-off.
Grease is specified by more than colour
The represented NAPA Consumables range contains numerous grease products, including titles referring to lithium and lithium-complex formulations. Grease combines base oil, thickener and additives. NLGI consistency describes firmness, not overall quality or compatibility. Two products with a similar colour can use different thickeners, base viscosities and additive systems.
Identify the component, operating temperature, speed, load, oscillation, water exposure and seal or plastic materials. Wheel bearings, CV joints, electrical contacts, brake components and general hinges have very different needs. Use only a product whose data covers the application. Overpacking a bearing can increase churning and heat; underfilling can starve the contact.
Clean the grease gun and nipple before connection. If changing product, determine whether purging is permitted and whether the two greases are compatible. A mixture can soften, harden or release oil. Label dispensing equipment and avoid returning unused material to the container.
Brake fluid selection and service discipline
Brake fluid transfers force in a safety-critical hydraulic system and must tolerate heat while protecting seals and metals. Use the vehicle manufacturer's current specification. DOT families are not a simple ascending quality ladder, and silicone and glycol-based fluids must never be confused. Product dry and wet boiling points, viscosity and formal standard all matter, especially where ABS or stability-control valves operate rapidly.
Keep the cap on until needed because common glycol fluids absorb atmospheric moisture. Use a clean dedicated dispenser and do not pour drained fluid back into the bottle. Protect paint immediately, clean any spill by the approved method and prevent mineral oil, grease or water entering the reservoir. Bleeding order and diagnostic activation can be vehicle-specific.
A low level needs investigation for pad wear or leakage; topping up without diagnosis can conceal a fault. If the pedal is abnormal, fluid is visibly escaping or a brake warning remains, do not drive the vehicle. HSE identifies brake fluids, lubricants, cleaning products and battery acid among substances hazardous to health in motor repair, so workshop controls and the safety data are part of the job.
EV charging cables and high-energy electrical products
Ten represented products are categorised as EV charging cables. A cable must match the vehicle inlet and the supply equipment at opposite ends. Confirm connector type, charging mode, single- or three-phase arrangement, maximum voltage and current, cable length and any coding or shutter details. The lower-rated part of the connected system limits the session.
Before every use, inspect plug faces, pins, strain reliefs and the full sheath. Do not use a cable that is crushed, burnt, cut, contaminated or showing loose pins. Uncoil it sufficiently to avoid heat accumulation as instructed, keep connections out of standing water and avoid routing across traffic or a trip path. Do not use domestic extension leads or adapters unless the equipment and charging guidance explicitly allow them.
For jump leads and chargers, establish battery chemistry and system voltage first. Keep polarities separate and use the vehicle's designated connection points. Hybrid and electric vehicles may still have a 12V support battery, but their orange high-voltage system is not a jump-start location. Do not open or probe high-voltage components.

Read the label each time, even for a familiar product, because formulations and hazards vary. A safety data sheet supports workplace assessment but does not replace the product instructions. Do not decant a chemical into a drink container or leave it unlabelled. Separate incompatible materials and protect products from frost or excess heat where specified.
Storage, inspection and disposal
Rotate stock by date and inspect packaging for leaks, rust, swelling or damaged seals. Keep bulbs in protective packaging, fluid bottles upright and charging equipment dry. Gloves are consumable protection: replace them when punctured, chemically degraded or outside their stated use. One glove material does not protect against every solvent.
Collect used brake fluid, contaminated cleaner, oily absorbents, aerosols and electrical items in suitable labelled streams. Never pour workshop chemicals into surface drains or onto the ground. Follow the safety data, local waste arrangements and site environmental controls. Empty packaging may still retain hazardous residue.
