Steel
Bare steel oxidises quickly. Remove rust and apply the specified corrosion-resistant primer before flash rust forms.
Galvanised steel

Aluminium
Its oxide reforms rapidly and requires controlled preparation. Steel abrasive contamination can start galvanic corrosion.
Plastics

Existing finish

Paint codes and colour variants
Find the vehicle paint code from reliable build data or its identification label. One code can have several formula variants reflecting factory, batch and application differences. Sun exposure and previous repairs change the panel further.
Spray a test card with the actual gun settings, ground coat and clear. Compare in daylight and artificial light at several angles. Metallic orientation makes a wet sample or tin colour unreliable.
Cleaning before sanding
Wash away salt and dirt, then remove wax, silicone, tar and oil using compatible cleaner and separate clean cloths. Sanding a contaminated surface drives residue into scratches and spreads it across the panel.
Use one cloth to apply cleaner and another to lift it before evaporation. Replace cloths frequently and keep silicone-containing polishes away from the work area.
Rust and corrosion repair
Remove corrosion to sound material by a controlled abrasive or blasting method. Pits require complete treatment, not merely darkening with converter under thick primer. Perforation and structural thinning need metal repair or panel replacement.
Protect seams, cavities and rear faces as well as the visible front. New topcoat cannot stop moisture entering from an untreated reverse side.
Abrasive preparation
Use the grit progression specified for filler, primer and topcoat. Coarse scratches show through; excessively fine surfaces reduce mechanical adhesion. Sanding blocks preserve panel shape better than fingertips.

Primer application and flash time
Apply the stated number of coats at correct film thickness. Heavy wet primer traps solvent, shrinks later and can crack. Flash time is the interval allowing volatile material to leave before another coat; it changes with temperature and airflow.

Plastic bumper refinishing
Remove mould-release agents, wax and traffic film with the specified cleaner. Repair cracks structurally using polymer-appropriate methods; primer cannot hold a split together. Maintain texture and flex characteristics.
Apply adhesion promoter only to exposed compatible plastic, usually as a very thin film. Excess can reduce adhesion. Use flexible coating additives only when required by the chosen system.
Aerosol and spray-gun application
Warm products only within stated limits and shake or mix fully. Maintain consistent overlap, distance and perpendicular angle. Start and finish passes beyond the panel edge where possible.
Aerosols suit small controlled repairs but still create hazardous airborne material. Professional guns need correct nozzle, pressure and extraction; more pressure is not automatically better and increases overspray.
Two-pack and isocyanate safety
Some hardened coatings contain isocyanates that can cause occupational asthma and severe sensitisation. Odour is not a safe exposure indicator. Spraying generally requires engineered booth extraction, supplied-air breathing apparatus, skin protection and health controls.
Do not spray such products in a home garage with only a cartridge mask. Read the safety data and use a competent professional facility where controls are unavailable.

Paint, solvent, contaminated cloths and filters require authorised disposal. Solvent-soaked material can self-heat or release vapour; use designated fire-safe containers and never pour waste into drains.

Refinishing must not obscure lamps, reflectors, glazing, cameras, radar covers, number plates or vehicle identification. Certain coatings and VOCs are controlled for professional use and disposal.
