Ramps & Chocs

Vehicle ramps, caravan levellers and wheel chocks manage height or unintended rolling, but they perform different jobs. Workshop drive-on ramps raise an axle for access; levelling ramps correct pitch at a stationary caravan or motorhome; chocks restrain wheels. This collection also includes matched ramp extensions that reduce approach angle. Use each product only for its stated vehicle, load and surface.

Choose ramps by rated capacity and whether it applies per ramp or pair, platform width and length, maximum tyre size, lift height, approach angle, ground footprint and end-stop design. Match extensions to the exact parent ramp. Choose levellers by wheel load, tyre width and required steps, and chocks by wheel diameter, load, slope, material and grip. Vehicle total weight alone does not reveal the load on one product.

Work on firm, level ground unless a levelling product explicitly permits a stated gradient. Inspect every ramp for cracks, bends, corrosion, loose surfaces or contamination and every chock for splits and poor tread contact. Do not use bricks, loose timber or stacked unrelated ramps. Never place a ramp over soft asphalt, gravel, drains or a hidden void, and do not exceed its marked height or capacity.

Align drive-on ramps squarely and use a trained spotter standing outside the vehicle path. Approach slowly in a straight line, stop on the platform before the end restraint and apply the parking procedure. Keep everyone away from the front and rear of the vehicle and never correct position by spinning the tyres. Chock the wheels remaining on the ground before anyone approaches the underside.

Ramps are support equipment only when designed and used for that purpose; levelling blocks are not automatically approved for under-vehicle work. Verify stability from outside, then follow any additional stand requirement in the ramp and vehicle instructions. Remove tools, unchock only at the correct stage and drive off slowly with a spotter. Stop for ramp movement, tyre overhang, rocking or any damaged component.

Ramps and chocks control different vehicle movements

A drive-on ramp supports tyre load above the floor, a levelling ramp changes a parked vehicle's attitude and a chock wedges against a tyre to resist rolling. An extension changes a service ramp's approach angle but depends on that ramp's structure. Safe use requires the correct combination rather than treating all moulded or steel blocks alike.

Chocks supplement the parking system; they do not create a working platform.

Capacity must be interpreted at the loaded wheel or axle

Axle load depends on vehicle layout, cargo, fluids and gradient. A caravan wheel on one side can carry more when the body is being levelled. Read whether a rating applies to one item, a pair or a complete set and use conservative actual weights.

Do not divide plated gross weight evenly without evidence of load distribution.

Tyre width and contact length determine support

The tread must sit fully on the ramp track or leveller step without sidewall bearing on sharp edges. Twin-wheel and wide low-profile tyres need specifically compatible platforms. A tyre that overhangs can deform, walk sideways or miss the end stop.

Measure the actual fitted tyre and account for steering angle before purchase.

Approach angle protects low bumpers and undertrays

The tyre rises while the bumper and sill move forward. A ramp can clear at rest yet contact bodywork halfway up. Compatible extensions lengthen the slope; loose boards can shift, split or create an unretained transition.

Measure the lowest structure and use only the ramp maker's approved extension arrangement.

The ground carries concentrated base loads

Ramp feet or moulded ribs concentrate weight. Soft asphalt can deform, gravel moves and paving can crack over a void. Sweep the area and inspect for oil, ice, drains and slope. All base points must contact together.

Do not bridge uneven ground with bricks, timber scraps or sheet metal.

Chock geometry should match the tyre

A chock works by creating a rising barrier and friction against the ground. If too small, it can wedge only beneath a tread edge or slide. The face should seat across a useful width of tyre, and the base must grip the actual surface.

Use pairs and both directions where the risk assessment or product instructions require them.

Gradient changes which side needs restraint

Place chocks on the downhill side before releasing any brake, and consider both sides of a wheel if direction can change during lifting or levelling. Steering angle can let a vehicle roll around a single chock.

Never rely on the gearbox park pawl or handbrake alone for work around or beneath a vehicle.

Driving onto ramps needs a clear spotter protocol

Align both ramps parallel with the tyre centres and engage extensions. The spotter stands to the side, never ahead or behind, and uses agreed stop signals. The driver approaches at idle or the lowest controllable speed without steering corrections on the slope.

Stop immediately if a ramp moves, turns or a tyre leaves the centre line.

Tyre spin is an immediate stop condition

Applying more throttle on a slipping ramp can eject it, overshoot the platform or damage the tyre. Reverse safely to the floor, correct alignment, grip or equipment choice and begin again.

Do not have people push a vehicle while they stand in its path.

Confirm every ramp base remains flat, tyres are centred and chocks make full contact. Look for rocking, frame twist and body or exhaust contact. If any issue exists, drive down and reset rather than reaching under to move loaded equipment.

Under-vehicle work needs explicit equipment permission

Service ramps designed and rated as supports may permit access when used exactly as instructed. Caravan levellers generally address parking attitude and should not be assumed safe for maintenance underneath. Some procedures may require secondary stands even with service ramps.

Follow both vehicle and ramp guidance and never crawl under based on appearance alone.

Levelling should not overload one wheel or twist the body

Assess side-to-side and fore-aft level, axle configuration and appliance needs. Raise in small intended steps and monitor tyre centring. On twin axles, products may need coordinated support so one tyre is not suspended or overloaded.

Once level, secure the vehicle using its parking and chocking procedure before occupants move around.

Departure reverses the restraint sequence

Remove tools and people, start and prepare the vehicle as specified, then remove chocks only when the service brake and driver control rolling. Use the spotter to reverse or drive off slowly and straight. Account for extensions and chocks before leaving.

Inspect equipment after any overshoot or impact.

Cleaning and storage preserve structural evidence

Remove oil, salt and grit using compatible products, dry steel and store ramps so they cannot fall or be driven over. Keep polymer items away from excessive heat and sunlight. Pair components and labels so ratings are not mixed.

Quarantine damaged equipment rather than marking it for “light vehicles only”.
