Respiratory protection is the last barrier around one wearer
Airborne dust, mist, fume, gas and vapour can enter the lungs without being visible. Respiratory protective equipment reduces inhalation only when the selected device is adequate for the hazard and suitable for the person and task. It protects its wearer, not other people sharing the air.
Elimination, substitution, enclosure, local exhaust ventilation and controlled working methods should reduce exposure before RPE is added.

The risk assessment defines what must be filtered
Identify every hazardous substance, whether it is a particle, gas, vapour or mixture, and the highest foreseeable concentration. Include cleaning chemicals, coatings, combustion products and materials generated by cutting or sanding. Safety data sheets inform the assessment but do not replace workplace exposure knowledge.
Unknown composition or concentration is a warning that a normal filtering respirator may be impossible to select safely.
Protection factor must exceed the required reduction
The required protection is derived from the unprotected exposure and the target safe concentration. The selected device needs an assigned protection factor at least that high, while remaining approved for the contaminant and use conditions. Nominal filter efficiency alone does not include face leakage and real-world use.
Do not convert FFP, P-filter or overseas ratings by appearance; use current UK workplace guidance and the product's certified specification.

ABEK1P3 has defined capabilities and finite capacity
A combination cartridge bearing ABEK and P3 markings addresses the listed gas/vapour groups and particles when fitted to its approved facepiece. The number relates to gas/vapour filter capacity class, not a promise that one cartridge suits any concentration. Humidity, temperature, breathing rate and contaminant mixture affect service life.
Use manufacturer data and a written change schedule; odour or taste is not a safe end-of-life indicator.
Filtering devices cannot create oxygen
Every filter respirator depends on the surrounding atmosphere containing enough breathable oxygen. Confined spaces, inert-gas releases, fires and unknown atmospheres may require supplied-air or self-contained breathing apparatus within a specialist safe system of work. A more efficient filter does not solve oxygen deficiency.
Never enter to test an atmosphere by seeing whether the mask feels adequate.
Isocyanate spraying requires a different approach
Current HSE motor-vehicle-repair guidance states that filtering respirators are not suitable for spraying isocyanate paints and specifies air-fed breathing apparatus. The booth or enclosure, breathing-air quality and flow, visor discipline, clearance time and decontamination method all form part of protection.
A cartridge labelled for organic vapour does not override this task-specific requirement.
Fit testing proves one model can seal to one face
Tight-fitting masks depend on contact around the face. HSE guidance calls for a competent fit test during selection for the exact make, model, type and size used. Anyone using more than one tight facepiece needs the relevant tests.
A pass for one disposable respirator does not transfer to a visually similar brand, another size or a reusable half mask.

Facial hair breaks tight face seals
Stubble, beards and hair crossing the sealing surface create paths for contaminated air. Tightening straps harder is not a reliable solution and can deform the mask. HSE advises clean-shaven skin where a close-fitting respirator seals.
Where facial hair must be retained, assess a suitable loose-fitting powered hood or other system that does not rely on a face seal.
Other PPE can disturb the mask
Safety-glasses arms, goggle seals, welding helmets, hearing protection and hard hats can lift a facepiece or alter straps. Select and fit-test equipment in the combination actually worn. Full-face respirator prescription inserts must be approved; ordinary spectacle arms through the seal create leakage.
Communication and field of view also affect whether the wearer can perform the task safely.
Disposable does not mean maintenance-free during a shift
Inspect the facepiece for crushed shape, torn straps, damaged nose seal, contamination and expiry. Replace it when damaged, difficult to breathe through, contaminated beyond its permitted use or as the instructions require. Do not wash, staple, tape or share a disposable respirator.
Leave the hazardous area before adjusting or replacing it.
Reusable masks need a complete pre-use inspection
Flex the face seal and examine body, inhalation and exhalation valves, valve seats, straps, visor, speech diaphragm, filter mounts and gaskets. A missing valve can bypass the filter completely. Confirm matched filters are locked in place and within date.
Use only manufacturer-approved components; similar bayonet lugs do not establish certification or sealing compatibility.
Cartridge change schedules prevent breakthrough
Gas and vapour filters saturate according to contaminant, concentration, humidity, temperature, flow and storage exposure. Establish replacement time using competent assessment and manufacturer service-life information, with a conservative safety margin. Date opening where required and store filters sealed from ambient contamination.
If smell, taste, irritation or dizziness occurs, leave immediately; do not use sensory warning as the planned change method.
Breathing resistance is a stop signal
Particle loading increases resistance and can disturb the seal as the wearer breathes harder. Valves can also stick. If breathing becomes difficult, the mask shifts, airflow fails or a low-flow alarm operates, leave by the planned safe route before investigating.
Never remove the facepiece inside contaminated air to wipe condensation or obtain relief.
Donning follows a repeatable sequence

Confirm the issued model, size, filters, expiry and maintenance state match the wearer and task.
Seat straps and seal correctly
Follow the manufacturer order without twisting straps or trapping hair and clothing.
Perform the specified fit check
Check positive or negative pressure as instructed, then resolve any leak before entry.
Training covers use, not only fitting
Wearers need to understand the hazard, device limits, inspection, donning, fit checking, safe removal, filter changes, cleaning, storage and emergency actions. They should report damage and health conditions that may affect safe use. Supervisors need enough knowledge to recognise misuse.
Practice should occur in clean air before the equipment is relied upon.
Cleaning must not damage protective materials
Remove filters as instructed and use the specified detergent, disinfectant, water temperature and drying method. Solvents, compressed air, unapproved wipes or strong heat can deform seals and valves. Inspect again after cleaning and reassemble only when dry.
Shared facepieces require a hygienic controlled process between wearers as well as individual fit suitability.
Storage prevents invisible filter consumption
Keep clean dry RPE away from dust, sunlight, oils, chemicals, extreme heat and physical deformation. Gas/vapour cartridges left open can adsorb contaminants even when not worn. Use the intended sealed container and prevent heavy items crushing the face seal.
Separate clean equipment from used filters and contaminated clothing.
Health and workload affect suitability
Respirators add breathing resistance, heat and communication burden. Medical conditions, anxiety, vision needs and strenuous work may change which device is suitable. Employers should arrange appropriate assessment where health may restrict RPE use and provide breaks or powered/supplied-air alternatives as indicated.
A technically adequate filter is not suitable if the wearer cannot safely perform the task in it.
Failure demands clean-air withdrawal
Leave immediately if contamination is smelled or tasted, irritation begins, breathing resistance rises, the seal breaks, a hose is damaged, airflow alarm sounds or the wearer feels unwell. Follow emergency arrangements and obtain medical help for suspected exposure.
Do not re-enter until the cause, equipment and atmosphere have been competently reassessed.
