A lighting board reproduces the rear signals other road users must see
Position lamps show width, stop lamps communicate braking, indicators show direction and rear fog lamps mark the vehicle in severely reduced visibility. Reflectors work without electrical power, while plate lamps make the registration legible at night.
These functions must remain correctly coloured, spaced, oriented and visible after the trailer or carrier is loaded.

Seven-pin and 13-pin systems carry different circuits
A traditional 7-pin road-light plug covers core trailer lighting through assigned pins. A 13-pin system integrates additional functions and a twist-lock weather-resistant connector, often including reversing and auxiliary supplies. Wiring conventions must be verified rather than guessed by wire colour alone.
An adaptor can connect formats only for the circuits it actually carries. If the board or trailer requires a function absent from the source socket, the adaptor cannot create it.

Connector inspection
Open the socket flap and look for bent, recessed, burned or green-corroded pins. The plug should engage fully and its cable gland should grip the outer sheath. A loose plug can disconnect during a turn.
Use only connector treatment specified for the system. Excess grease can insulate contacts or trap grit, and probing with oversized test pins spreads terminals.
Earth faults create misleading combinations
A high-resistance common earth makes current return through other lamp filaments, so indicators may dim the tail lamps or stop lamps may flash. Test voltage drop between board earth and towing-vehicle earth while several lamps operate.
Repair the cable, pin or vehicle earth; do not add a wire to the towball as an improvised return.

Bulb replacement and lens condition
Use the specified bulb base, wattage and colour. Disconnect the plug, allow hot bulbs to cool and keep fingerprints off sensitive glass where instructed. Clean corrosion without removing spring tension from the holder.
Replace cracked, colour-faded or water-filled lamp units. Tape over a broken lens does not restore optical colour, weather sealing or security.
LED boards and repair limits
Sealed LED clusters may be non-serviceable. Partial segment failure can reduce visible output even when the board passes a quick glance. Check each function from a realistic distance and angle.
Do not drill a sealed housing or bypass its driver. Replace the module/board when water or electronics damage is outside the supported repair.
Board width and lamp position
The board should represent the rear width appropriately, while separate trailer marker lamps may still be required. A narrow cycle-carrier board placed centrally does not automatically satisfy a wide trailer's full lighting arrangement.
Keep the board horizontal and the red lenses facing rearward. Do not mount behind tinted plastic, mesh, bicycles or straps.
Registration plate display
When the towing vehicle's plate is obscured, display the correct repeated registration on the board using a lawful plate, secure clips and working illumination. A handwritten card or plate from another vehicle is not suitable.
Mount it so it cannot swing, fold or disappear behind the load during travel.
Cable length and turning envelope
Couple fully, then route the cable with enough slack for maximum articulation without dragging at straight ahead. Check left/right lock, ramps and suspension travel. Support surplus in broad loops on the trailer or carrier.
Do not pass it through a tailgate or door that crushes insulation. Keep away from safety chains and breakaway cables so they cannot tangle.
Mounting and secondary retention
Use designed hard points
Fit brackets or straps to the board's mounting features without covering lenses. Cable ties exposed to sun and exhaust heat may not be an adequate primary mounting.
Control vibration
Prevent the board striking bikes or trailer body. Vibration fractures bulb filaments and wires.
Recheck after loading
Loads settle and bicycle wheels rotate. Confirm no strap, tyre or cover can obscure or detach the board.
Trailer-socket diagnosis on the towing vehicle
Use a suitable socket tester and then verify under real lamp load. Some vehicle modules detect an attached trailer, alter stability control or disable rear fog/parking sensors. Coding may be required after towbar electrical installation.
Do not bridge protected outputs with a high-current test lamp unless the wiring procedure permits it.
Roadworthiness and UK requirements
The current Highway Code states that the vehicle and trailer must comply with construction, use and lighting regulations. Applicable MOT inspection includes the towing vehicle's trailer socket and related wiring. Police or roadside enforcement can still identify trailer-lighting defects outside MOT.
Lighting is only one part of safe towing: check plated weights, tyres, coupling, breakaway or secondary connection and load security.
Pre-departure and journey checks catch moving-load faults
Test every required lamp with the engine and vehicle electrical system in the condition specified by the towing equipment. Ask an assistant to observe, or use a safe reflection or test device; do not rely on a dashboard indicator alone. Confirm the registration plate is the correct one, legible and illuminated where required. Clean lenses and reflectors without using polish that reduces their optical performance.
After the first short distance, stop somewhere safe and inspect the plug, cable route, board mount and carrier straps. Heat, vibration and load settlement can reveal slack that was not present at departure. Repeat checks at sensible journey intervals and after loading changes, reversing contact or severe weather.
Fault urgency depends on the signal lost
A failed indicator, stop lamp, rear position lamp, fog lamp or insecure board makes the combination unsafe and potentially unlawful. Stop before continuing on the road and repair it; hazard warning lamps are not a substitute for missing trailer signals. Intermittent flicker deserves the same attention because vibration can turn it into total failure.
