Read the transmission tag, stamped code or diagnostic identification and confirm it against VIN and production data. Replacement units may differ from factory build.
Note gear count, drive layout, torque capacity and revision. A minor valve-body update can change gasket holes while leaving the pan outline familiar.

Fluid compatibility
Automatic transmission fluids differ in viscosity, friction behaviour and additive chemistry. CVT, dual-clutch and manual units can require entirely different products.
Use the exact manufacturer approval, not colour or a broad “universal” claim. Incorrect fluid can swell seals and alter shift or clutch performance.
Tracing the source before dismantling
Degrease the exterior safely and observe after a controlled drive or static operation. Use approved dye when needed and inspect above the apparent pan leak.

Overfill and breather faults
Excess level aerates fluid and raises splash at vents and seals. A blocked breather makes pressure vary with temperature.
Correct the cause and use the temperature-specific level procedure. Replacing a perimeter gasket alone will not control internal pressure.
Preparing the vehicle
Record diagnostic data and fluid temperature, then isolate power according to the drivetrain. Chock, raise and support the vehicle at approved points.
Use a clean drain vessel and prevent burns. Some units have no dipstick and can release fluid unexpectedly when an overflow plug is opened hot.

Keep check balls, screens and valves in exact documented positions. Compare separator plates by code and every hole, not overall shape.
Use guide pins and staged torque for the valve body. A trapped bridge seal or wrong plate thickness can cause immediate pressure faults.
Removing old gaskets
Use non-marring scrapers and solvent compatible with the casting. Protect open bores, bearings and oil passages from debris.
Avoid abrasive pads and powered discs that remove aluminium or leave grit. Clear blind bolt holes of fluid to prevent hydraulic cracking.

O-ring installation
Confirm material, cross-section and location, then lubricate only with the specified assembly fluid. Roll rings into place without spiral twist.
Protect them over threads and splines with sleeves. A cut too small to see can leak under hot operating pressure.
Lip-seal installation
Identify fluid side and spring orientation, then drive the seal square to the stated depth. Inspect shaft or flange for grooves and bearing movement.
Use installation sleeves across sharp edges and do not hammer directly on the sealing lip. Pre-lubricate only where the seal design requires it.
Pan-gasket fitting
Fit the gasket dry unless the kit and transmission instructions name an adhesive or sealant. Temporary general grease can alter elastomer or let it extrude.
Start all bolts by hand and tighten from the centre or in the specified pattern. Overtorque distorts pressed rails and squeezes moulded seals out.
Sealant-only case joints
Use the named anaerobic or RTV product at the exact bead location. Assemble within open time and respect cure before fluid exposure.
Internal squeeze-out may block a hydraulic feed. Never substitute a thick general silicone for a precision flange compound.
Refilling and level setting
Fill through the designated port using clean dedicated equipment. Start, select ranges and monitor live temperature when the procedure requires circulation.
Keep the vehicle level and set overflow at the stated temperature window. Too cold or hot changes volume enough to create a wrong final level.

Some mechatronic work needs calibration, clutch filling or adaptation reset; others specifically retain learned values. Apply only the routine matching the repair.
