Reliant classification begins with wheel count
Regal, Robin and Rialto use a single-front-wheel three-wheel layout. Kitten and Fox use four wheels and their own passenger/utility duties. Scimitar belongs to a separate four-wheel sports and grand-touring family. A Reliant badge does not establish the chassis, engine or legal class.
Check the V5C description against the physical vehicle and chassis number. Conversions or rebodies can require documentary correction and engineering evidence.

Chassis number and current configuration must agree
Record chassis/VIN, engine number, gearbox, rear axle and body series. The vehicle may have a replacement engine, later carburettor, different axle or four-wheel conversion. Photograph mountings and retain receipts before dismantling.
If wheel count, engine capacity, body type or colour differs from the record, follow DVLA and insurance requirements rather than treating paperwork as optional restoration detail.
GRP condition and steel condition are separate inspections
GRP resists red rust but can crack, craze, delaminate, absorb moisture or pull away around fasteners. Beneath it, a steel chassis can corrode where road dirt and trapped moisture accumulate. A glossy body does not demonstrate chassis strength.
Inspect rails, outriggers, suspension and steering mounts, body fasteners, seat-belt anchors and brake/fuel supports. Lift and support from approved chassis points, not an unsupported GRP sill.
Grinding GRP creates hazardous dust
Control dust with extraction, suitable respiratory and eye protection, skin coverage and housekeeping. Keep resin vapour away from ignition and follow product cure temperature and mixing ratios.

Three-wheel stability changes lifting and workshop movement
Use a flat, hard surface and the Reliant lifting procedure. Chock the correct wheels and keep the centre of gravity within the support triangle. Raising one side or loading the cabin can shift stability more abruptly than on a wide four-wheel vehicle.
Never work beneath a jack-only Reliant. Place rated stands at approved chassis locations and test stability from outside the fall zone. Do not use the GRP body as a jack pad.
The single front wheel carries steering and braking duties
Identify front wheel, tyre, fork/kingpin or steering arrangement, bearings, hub and brake by exact model. Check for play, stiffness, cracked brackets, hose routing and tyre damage through full steering movement. One front defect can affect both directional control and a significant share of braking.
Use the specified tyre type, size, load/speed rating and pressure. A motorcycle tyre of a similar visible diameter is not automatically suitable for an enclosed motor tricycle.
Brake balance is designed for three contact patches

Wheel and tyre condition affects legal classification indirectly
The number of wheels is a fundamental recorded construction feature. Converting a tricycle to four wheels changes far more than tyre count: chassis, suspension, brakes, body, registration, insurance and test classification require an engineered and declared process.
For ordinary service, keep all wheels straight, correctly torqued and fitted with tyres meeting model dimensions and loads. Inspect old wheels for corrosion and distorted stud seats.
Robin, Rialto and Regal engines need exact capacity data
Use engine number, capacity, carburettor, ignition and cooling arrangement. Similar external engines can have different internal or ancillary specifications. Check oil pressure, valve clearances and ignition by the applicable manual.
Small oil capacity makes leakage and overfill proportionally important. Read level on the stated ground/temperature condition and do not thicken oil to hide bearing or pump faults.
Scimitar powertrains form a separate service family
Identify Scimitar series, engine, manual/automatic gearbox, overdrive where fitted, axle ratio, brake package and cooling. Externally sourced engine families changed over production, so Scimitar name and cylinder count are insufficient.
Long coolant hoses, fuel lines and electrical routes need full inspection. A performance conversion must account for chassis, gearbox torque, axle, brakes and airflow.
Cooling and fuel systems age during storage
Inspect radiator, cap, pump, thermostat, hoses, fan and heater. Use coolant compatible with the engine and mixed metals, filling and bleeding by model. A leak in a small system can cause rapid overheating.
Tank sediment, stale petrol and hardened hose can damage carburettor or pump. Work with ventilation and no ignition sources. Use fuel-rated components compatible with current petrol.
Fluids must match engine, gearbox and axle
Reliant small-car and Scimitar assemblies use different oil capacities and specifications. Manual gearbox, automatic, overdrive and rear axle can require separate lubricants. Do not use one classic gear oil across the range.
Brake fluid family, coolant and engine oil must also reflect any conversions. Record specification, amount and date rather than leaving later owners to infer from colour.
Chassis corrosion often reveals itself through alignment
Uneven door gaps, steering change, tyre contact or cracked GRP around mounts can indicate a moving steel structure. Inspect the chassis before adjusting hinges or aligning wheels. Remove dirt and coatings enough to see sound metal.
Structural welding needs dimensions, bracing and protection from fire. GRP and fuel vapour make hot work particularly hazardous; separate or shield them under a competent plan.
Licence entitlement should be checked, not assumed
Current Great Britain guidance says an over-21 holder of a full category B car licence can drive a motor tricycle of any power. Other routes use motorcycle categories: A1 covers motor tricycles not exceeding 15 kW and A covers those over 15 kW, with special rules for provisional, legacy and disability entitlements.
Rules and individual licence codes vary. Check the actual photocard/record and current GOV.UK or DVLA guidance before driving; never rely on the old claim that every three-wheeler needs only a motorcycle licence.
MOT class follows wheel count and recorded unladen weight
Current DVSA guidance places three-wheel vehicles not over 450 kg unladen in class 3; those over 450 kg are class 4. Four-wheel Reliants use the applicable class for their recorded type, use and weight. Historic exemptions may apply separately when legal criteria are met.
Confirm the V5C and test station capability in advance. Test class does not change tyre, brake or structural safety requirements.

Loads and modifications require legal evidence
Do not exceed manufacturer or recorded gross/axle limits on Fox or other utility variants. Passenger and luggage placement affects the three-wheel stability triangle. Use approved towing data rather than assuming a light vehicle can tow because a bracket fits.
Engine, wheel-count, brake, chassis and body changes need engineering, DVLA and insurer consideration. Keep photographs, weights and component specifications.
