Decode four identifiers before choosing a Volkswagen part

Use the full VIN and build date to establish the vehicle, then the engine code, gearbox code and relevant PR production codes. These identifiers answer different questions. The VIN can lead to a factory build record; engine and transmission codes select mechanical families; PR codes describe installed options such as brake or suspension packages. Record body style, wheelbase, door count, driven axles, steering side and sales market. A Golf estate and hatchback of the same generation can differ behind the rear seats. Model name, generation and platform are different layers

Volkswagen reuses model names across decades. Specify Golf Mk generation or internal type, Passat generation, Polo platform, Transporter series and facelift state. A facelift can change lamps and electronics while leaving some mechanical parts. Engine-oil approvals

Volkswagen oil standards use specific number-and-letter approvals. Transmission code matters more than the DSG badge

DSG describes a dual-clutch operating concept, not one gearbox. Volkswagen applications include different torque capacities, clutch types, fluid circuits and service requirements. Manual gearboxes, conventional automatics, electric single-speed drives and hybrid transmissions add further families.

Mechatronic replacement can need basic settings, adaptation and software. Electronic parking-brake service requires a diagnostic service mode and correct piston procedure. Applying power directly or winding the mechanism by force can damage it. ABS wheel-speed encoder orientation matters; magnetic rings can be invisible and are easily contaminated by metal particles.

Fluids, cooling and maintenance records

Select coolant by the current Volkswagen specification for the VIN and installed system, not by pink, purple or another colour. G11, G12-family, G13 and G12evo names reflect different generations and mixing rules. Identify existing chemistry and use the approved flush or conversion process. Inspection, diagnostics and UK MOT

Scan with equipment that can access Volkswagen control modules and record codes before clearing them. A generic powertrain code is only a starting point.
