Winter preparation is a system, not a single product
Safe cold-weather operation depends on starting energy, tyre grip, visibility, fluid protection and driver planning. One neglected area can defeat all the others: a strong battery cannot compensate for summer washer fluid frozen in its pipes.
Assess the vehicle before the first frost and repeat checks through the season as temperature, tread, fluid level and journey pattern change.

Battery performance in cold weather
Chemistry and temperature
Electrochemical reactions slow as temperature falls, reducing available power. At the same time oil drag and fuel preparation increase starting demand.
State of charge
A partly discharged battery is more vulnerable to freezing and sulphation. Repeated short trips may never replace start energy.
Testing
Check resting state, conductance or load performance, cranking voltage and charging control. Smart alternators require appropriate interpretation and battery registration after replacement where specified.
Charging and jump-start equipment
Choose a charger compatible with lead-acid, AGM, EFB or other fitted chemistry and connect at the vehicle's designated points. A lithium jump pack has minimum operating and storage temperatures and must not be left damaged or swollen.
Follow polarity, key, alarm and hybrid-system procedures. Never jump a frozen, leaking or visibly damaged battery. Sparks near charging gas can cause explosion.
Tyres, pressure and grip
Air pressure falls as temperature drops. Set pressures when tyres are cold using vehicle load data, not the maximum printed on the tyre. Underinflation harms steering and generates heat; overinflation reduces compliant contact.
Legal tread depth is a minimum, not a guarantee of winter performance. Examine inner edges, cuts, bulges and age. Winter and all-season tyres use compounds and tread designed for particular conditions; fit compatible tyres consistently by axle and preferably as a complete set.

Practise fitting chains or socks in dry daylight. Check the handbook for driven axle, tyre size and restricted clearances. Remove equipment when the road no longer requires it.
Coolant freeze protection
Coolant protects against freezing, boiling and corrosion. Measure concentration using a suitable refractometer or tester calibrated for the chemistry. Do not mix by colour or top up indefinitely with concentrate; excessive glycol can reduce heat transfer.
Use the exact manufacturer approval and deionised or specified water. A leak, weak cap, thermostat or pump fault needs repair before winter.
Screenwash, washers and wipers
Winter screenwash must remain fluid at expected temperature and remove road salt. Dilute only to the label table, considering the mixture already in the reservoir. Mixing products can create gel or deposits.
Do not operate a frozen washer pump repeatedly. Thaw safely and inspect reservoir, lines, jets and fuse. Replace wipers that smear, chatter, split or leave unwiped bands, and free frozen blades from glass before switching them on.
De-icing safely
Use a plastic scraper and automotive de-icer suitable for glass and finishes. Never pour boiling water on a cold windscreen; thermal shock can crack it and runoff refreezes around doors and ground.
Do not leave the vehicle unattended with the engine running. Clear the entire windscreen and side/rear visibility, not a small viewing hole. Remove snow from roof, bonnet, lamps and number plates.
Lighting and electrical load
Winter increases use of dipped lamps, fog lamps, blowers, heated glass and seats. Inspect every required exterior lamp and clean lenses. A working lamp can still be too dim through voltage drop or damaged optics.
Rear fog lamps should be used only in seriously reduced visibility and switched off when it improves. Extra auxiliary lamps must be approved, wired and aimed correctly.
Cabin heat and demisting
Effective demisting needs blower airflow, correct coolant temperature, functioning air conditioning and unobstructed vents. Replace a blocked cabin filter and investigate coolant smell or greasy glass that may indicate a heater-matrix leak.
Wet coats and snow increase cabin humidity. Use fresh-air mode as appropriate and keep the A/C operational because it dries air even in winter.

Emergency kit planning
Choose for route, occupants and weather: warm layers, waterproof gloves, torch, phone power, scraper, screenwash, first-aid supplies, warning triangle where safe and lawful, food and water for longer rural travel. Medication and child needs require individual planning.
Secure every item away from pedals and passenger impact zones. High-visibility clothing should be reachable before stepping into the road, not buried beneath luggage.

Windows must provide a clear view, tyres must meet legal condition requirements and required lamps, washers and wipers must operate. Snow or unsecured equipment must not create danger. Winter conditions do not excuse an unroadworthy vehicle.
