Sockets: drive, profile, depth and construction
Start at the fastener. Metric and imperial sizes that feel close are not interchangeable. Use a six-point socket for maximum face contact where access and fastener design allow; a twelve-point socket can provide finer engagement angles and is required for some twelve-point fasteners, but it should still match exactly. Replace sockets with rounded openings, cracks or damaged drive ends.
Drive size is the square connection to the ratchet or powered tool, commonly 1/4, 3/8, 1/2 inch and larger in this kind of range. A reducer does not increase the capacity of the smaller tool. Impact sockets are designed to tolerate repeated impact loading in their rated application; that does not make them indestructible. Ratchets, bars and controlled leverage
A ratchet improves access but is not automatically the correct tool for initial loosening of a seized fastener. Excess leverage can break the mechanism, socket or fastener and can throw the user off balance.

Spanners, pliers and striking tools

Long-nose pliers are not pry bars, locking pliers are not a universal replacement for a correctly sized wrench, and circlip pliers must match internal or external rings and hole size. Hammers, punches and chisels need compatible striking faces. Do not use a steel hammer on a hardened component where the method calls for a soft-faced or brass tool. Remove from service any hammer with a loose head or split handle and any punch or chisel with a mushroomed head, because fragments can detach at speed. Eye protection is essential for striking tasks.
Torque tools are measuring equipment
Choose a torque wrench whose working range contains the specified value comfortably, then confirm units. Newton metres and pound-feet are not interchangeable numbers. Fit the correct socket, hold the designated handle position, apply slow and steady force, and stop at the wrench's indication. Repeated clicking adds torque rather than improving certainty.
An extension placed along the wrench axis, including some crowfeet, changes effective length and may require a corrected setting. Positioning a suitable crowfoot at 90 degrees can minimise length change in many procedures, but follow the torque-tool and repair instructions. Never use a torque wrench as the main breaker bar. Keep it clean, avoid drops, store adjustable click types as directed and arrange calibration at the required interval or after suspected overload.
