Engine oil: viscosity is only one line of the specification
COMMA engine-oil titles in this range include 0W-16, 0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30, 5W-40 and older-style grades. SAE viscosity describes flow behaviour at defined cold and hot test conditions; it does not by itself describe detergent chemistry, after-treatment compatibility, fuel economy performance or a vehicle manufacturer's detailed requirements. Two containers labelled 5W-30 may therefore serve different engines.
Read the required specification exactly, including suffixes and revision where the vehicle information gives them. Official American Petroleum Institute motor-oil guidance tells owners to follow vehicle-manufacturer recommendations on performance level and viscosity. ACEA sequences likewise define distinct performance categories rather than a single ladder where every newer label replaces every older application. A product title containing "C2", "C3" or another shorthand still needs confirmation against its current technical data and the engine requirement.
Capacity is also vehicle-specific. Published dry, overhaul and service-fill quantities can differ, and residual oil remains in galleries or coolers. Add less than the nominal quantity initially, use the prescribed dipstick or electronic level routine, allow the stated drain-back time, and approach the final mark carefully. Overfilling can be as harmful as running low.

Coolant type, concentration and safe handling
The represented COMMA coolant group includes Xstream products and both concentrated and ready-to-use descriptions. COMMA's official Xstream G30 ready-mixed page identifies it as an ethylene-glycol OAT coolant and explicitly says not to dilute it or mix different antifreeze types. That instruction applies to that product; other COMMA coolants have their own chemistry and application data. Never transfer one set of details to the whole range.
Concentrate requires controlled mixing to the product and vehicle instructions. Too little antifreeze can reduce freeze and corrosion protection; excessive concentration can impair heat transfer and low-temperature behaviour. Use the specified water quality and a clean measuring vessel. Ready-mixed coolant removes the dilution calculation but does not remove the need to select the right specification.
Never remove a pressurised cooling-system cap when hot. Allow the system to cool, protect skin and eyes, and contain drained fluid. Antifreeze can be harmful if swallowed, and spills should be cleaned promptly. Keep it away from children and animals and retain it in a labelled container. In England, Environment Agency guidance classifies antifreeze according to its hazardous content and says different waste-fluid categories must not be mixed.
Transmission, gear and power-steering fluids
Manual gearboxes, dual-clutch units, continuously variable transmissions, torque-converter automatics and transfer cases do not share one fluid requirement. The lubricant influences bearing and gear protection, synchroniser or clutch friction, hydraulic control and seal compatibility. Identify the installed unit by code or dependable technical data. Vehicle registration alone can leave unresolved transmission options.
Some manual oils use familiar SAE gear grades and American Petroleum Institute GL descriptions, but viscosity and GL category remain incomplete selection evidence. Limited-slip differentials can require particular friction behaviour. Automatic-transmission products may reference specific applications or standards, while the word multi-vehicle does not authorise use outside the stated list. Mixing an unsuitable fluid to "top up" can create a blend meeting neither requirement.
Many transmissions have temperature-dependent level procedures. The vehicle may need to be level, the engine running, selector positions cycled and fluid temperature read with diagnostic equipment. Follow the actual sequence and use suitable lifting equipment. HSE warns that a vehicle must never be supported by a jack alone.
Greases, brake fluid and workshop chemicals
COMMA grease examples include lithium, lithium-complex, molybdenum-disulphide, copper-based and spray products. Their material, consistency and intended service differ. A wheel bearing, constant-velocity joint, electrical contact and brake component present unlike loads and compatibility constraints. Do not mix greases unless compatibility is established, and do not place any lubricant on a brake friction surface.
Brake fluid is hygroscopic in common glycol-based systems and selection depends on the vehicle's specified type. Keep the container closed, prevent contamination with oil or water and do not reuse bled fluid. If the hydraulic system has been opened, use the correct bleeding procedure and verify a firm pedal and leak-free system before movement. Brake work should go to a competent technician when diagnosis, pressure bleeding or electronic control procedures exceed the available skills and equipment.
Cleaners, degreasers, underbody coatings and additives need their individual labels and safety data. Check ventilation, ignition risk, substrate compatibility and required PPE. An additive should not be used to mask low pressure, overheating, leakage or mechanical noise. Diagnose the fault before introducing another chemical.
